Longhill

You all had the chance to do something for our estate on May 1st, but most of you sat there and did nothing, one local man who was running to be elected came 2nd and we are now stuck with John Hewitt for another 4yrs, this man has done nothing for our estate, I wish more of you would take an interest in your surroundings, you all moan about the state of our shops, but do nothing, you moan about the state of the Park but you do nothing, we had a real chance this year of electing someone who cared about our estate, you not only let him down, but you let yourselfs down, shame on you all who didnt vote.

What can you do when your surrounded by that rapidly spreading disease-’APATHY’.which also reflected on the poor turnout at the Polling stations. One thing for certain the ‘Newly elected’ will continue to do nothing because the people are not demanding enough. He will continue sitting in an empty office-filling in his ‘Sudoku’s and claim for his expenses at the end of the week

Yes the election result could have been much better….I found the time to vote, but levels of apathy are driven by the conduct of the government. We desperately need improvements to Shannon Road ( just paid out for repairs to my car agftain !!!) It really is time for action, with the LIB DEMs having a majority they should have a bigger interest in supporting their candidate. Any ideas our re elected Labour Councillors have will be left in the " in tray " by the LIB DEMS…Longhill is worringly in political no mans land. I am completely at a loss to understand the political process. If the Lib Dems had worked with the Independent candidate ( look at the numbers who did vote ) you may well have a new councillor on Longhill Estate. There is a greater need to work together and recognise all contributions to make change happen.

totally agree with you glencraker, and as for having John Hewitt in again for another 4yrs, he will make sure nothing is done, we had Netto interested at one point until Mr big wig Hewitt stuck his size 10 boot in, in his leaflet (which i could not stop laughing at), he said he listened to the longhill residents cared about longhill estate, he couldnt even bother along with his wife Mrs B. Hewitt and Mr Black to visit any flood victims on our estate, even after nearly a year some residents are still waiting to get back into their homes, and were are our local so called councillors, no were to be seen, they say they are interested dont make me laugh, well as far as i am concerned WAR as started on this estate towards our local councillors, do you care to join.

War is a pretty strong word..perhaps consistent lobbying throughout the year. I have researched a lot of the minutes from Forum meetings, not many people turn up and a lot of buck passing to the East Area Team ( how ever that is ) to be honest councillors ( all parties ) listen…but actions are needed, its time to drive change, but whilst Labour is losing credibility across the country(and votes across the country) here on this Estate things worringly stay the same, neglect continues. There is not enough communication across the state, a residents Newsletter, available from the Health Centre, newsagents or schools, with clear aims and objectives for the year might help. Community spirit needs cultivating. Apathy and an acceptance that change may never happen is prevalent. Aspirations in young and old need building upon, there is a core of residents on this estate who care about the area ( from differing backgrounds ) perhaps by working together and to our strengths can happen !!

I would also like residents to really push for road improvements around the estate, there needs to be better signage about were facilities are ( perhaps at Diadem roundabout )and flashing speed warning signs, perhaps by building some momentum with a few small " wins " we can all contribute something positive, the election result has happened, its time to move on and make sure promises are delivered.

smky57, why did YOU not stand as a independant, by what I read on this site you always seem to have something to say

Can I take it then, that not many people on Longhill Estate think J.Black has got where he is, by putting himself out for the residents. How any true Labour Party supporter can vote for this shambolic Blair/Mandelson shower of New Labour, which still uses the name ‘The Labour Party’ when they want your vote, I can’t imagine. At least the famous four of the SDP, set up with their own premises and finances. Forget Party politics and vote for the candidate who’s ideals are most in tune with your own. After all, poloiticians are the same the world over…..All for one and all for one!!

Derringham Ward like Longhill has been neglected by all Lib Dem councillors when the floods happened last year they were no where to be seen, maybe frightened to get their feet wet. The Independent councillor did all he could for the 8,888 residents offering help where and when he could. What happened on 1st May he was replaced with another do nothing councillor. God Help us! I think this city is going to need it now. Independents DO WORK FOR THE PEOPLE and not themselves or Party. This council lost at least four of these on 1st May and no-one can understand why after all they all voted to keep them didn’t they????

I feel sure a lot of local people are unsure what local councillors contribute to their respective wards. I believe Ward forum meetings are not particularly well attended. I would like to see councillors of all political backgrounds out in the community more, perhaps visiting local schools and colleges, talking to local people , really focusing upon apathy and working to resolve ongoing issues. The poor turnout at the election reflects that local politicians really need to get out there and really communicate with local people. ( not just hand out an election leaflet.) Gordon Brown needs to take a long hard look at where he is taking this country and its long term economic damage. The political process has in some cases become a real gravy train, local councillors seem to take the flak for poor decisions from the top…

Independent councillors work for the people and their slogan "Putting Residents First" really meant that. Granted most of them were members of other parties. People should be asking why did they leave the "Party Ship" and go it alone? They had seen that residents even though elected to serve their needs etc. were not getting value for money from the elected councillors and wanted to make a difference. Look at how parts of Bransholme have turned around because the two councillors work within the community all the time. They have stopped the exodus and now people are wanting to move there. All of the Independent councillors were of the same ideals and they did work hard for the residents, they even got another group with the same ideas that the residents should come first and they stood in the elections. They even got good responses after the leaders went on radio with only the Independent leader coming on top for the residents and this City. Sadly the citizens of Hull were not as bold as Boston people were when they elected their Boston Independent council. So now we suffer breaking up roads, damaged cars, dark streets, crime figures on the rise, more money going into the pockets of those who do nothing for the residents. On that point I shall get off my soapbox.

Most people don’t realise that it takes an enormous amount of work to get – and stay – elected as a non-labour councillor in Hull. There have been exceptions, but very few. The independents now on the Council were all members of parties when they were first elected, and they don’t have the capacity to fight a proper campaign, which is why they get picked off. Doubtless the other parties would like to campaign in all the wards – especially in wards like Longhill where there is obviously support for the Lib Dems for instance – but they simply don’t have the man-power. There aren’t that many keen political activists about. But, if you reckon you can deliver 15000 leaflets in April 2010, give it a go – you might win!

I have just heard that the Lib DEM rep. who stood for election on Longhill has resigned …what a waste of 400 plus voters beliefs…how on earth can you make a difference from the touch line…why should residents be ashamed when such behaviour reinforces apathy !!!

Smky57 I have just read with interest your posts on this site, and with out sounding to rude have you nothing good to say about anything, you yourself live on Longhill, as do I! you moan about the state of the estate, the state of the shops. kids, rubbish, even out of date blood viles! Whats that all about! life is to short!. Maybe if its that bad up here and your so ashamed of how this estate is you should find somewhere else to live if its not up to your high standards. Maybe more people would vote if those standing in election actually did what they say they will. Maybe we’ll see you standing. NOT! DaveGorman well said

Well said GlenCraker. we should not be ashamed of where we live anyway.

  15. GlenCraker Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Shame on all those who have the power to make a difference to local lives ( young and old )...and who turn the other cheek… Shame on the retailer who let the old Kwik Save store remain in such a state… Shame on a system that completely alienates local people through taking as much council tax as possible and delivering very little in return. Frustration is better aimed at those who have let us and the surrounding community down. We have to work with the elected councillors and inspire change, talk to one another and work together as a community, respect differing opinions, and share ideas…

I didnt say i was ashamed of where i live, i have lived here for nearly 30yrs and have many friends here, it gets very frustrating when no one seems to listen what residents want, i was part of the shop sterring group run by our local councillors, but every meeting i attended it was the same old thing, just talk and no action been put into place, all councillors agreed nearly a year ago our shops need to be brought into the 21st century, still nothing is happening, its been suggested having a market once a week, but still nothing happens, all i have tried to do is try and improve things on our estate, but certain people on this site call it moaning, if you dont speak out then nothing will ever get done.

Well GlenCraker, just to correct your post about the Lib Dem candidate – he has had to resign from a lot of activities due to mainly extreme personal circumstances. He is however even more active on behalf of Longhill than ever before. If you know him why not contact him direct – you may wish to post a retraction when you find out what has happened recently.

  18. GlenCraker Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

My comments about the LiB Dem. candidate are made without any knowledge about this gentleman’s personal circumstances, if I have caused any ill feeling I genuinely apologise. In no way am I going to knock some one has stood up and attempted to make a difference locally, a lack of communication often leads to misinterpretation. perhaps his party could have supported him better or put forward someone to represent LIB DEM issues??? here on Longhill, a real lack of communication has led to a misunderstanding. The Lib DEm candidate focused upon local issues and problems of concern..my comments focus upon what causes apathy. I wonder if he had won the council seat would his party be more supportive his efforts to make a difference ? I wish the gentleman who stood as a Lib Dem candidate best wishes and that his continued contribution to Longhill be valued by all residents.
