Traffic lights at night TURN THEM OFF
by Willow

Last updated 5 months ago.
I go to work during the night and am constantley sat at red lights when there is not another car in sight. This is a waste of electric, as well as my time and diesel while I am sat there with the engine running. Surley with todays technology the council or highways department can do something better. Perhaps turn off traffic lights at midnight for say four hours. How much money would be saved?? Probably thousands and help the enviroment.

Coming home on my bike after midnight, I generally ignore traffic lights unles there is any other traffic around. I was pretty glad that I glanced back the other night as I approached Southcoates Lane lights…just about to go through on red, and I realised that a police car was right behind me!

so what if they did turn off the traffic lights, then all of a sudden theres other road users or padestrians about… think about it.. i see your point as it is annoying, but traffic lights are there for a reason.

In some parts of mainland Europe, local authorities have completely dispensed with traffic lights at some junctions, creating a "Shared Space" where no-one has priority. People cross the road, vehicles slow down and it works fine. Why not here?.

Freedoddy Submitted 6 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
If you drive from the Castle Street roundabout down Ferensway, then along Beverley Road, drive at 30 mph or below. As you approach traffic lights, assuming there is nothing waiting at other junctions, the lights will change in your favour. A taxi driver showed me this on a run down that stretch one night after midnight. It was true too. Don’t know exactly how it works…but it does.
As for turning them all off? Thats just dangerous. Look on the bright side, for all the time you waste at traffic lights on red, think of the time you’re saving not having traffic congestion to contend with. It works both ways.
-
Willow Submitted 6 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
How much traffic congestion due think there is during the night. Which is the very idea of turning them off. There is so little traffic about you see more Freedoddy’s rummaging through dustbins than you see other vehicles.
-
Freedoddy Submitted 6 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
I’ll explain again…there is no congestion at night so you have to take the rough with the smooth. Seeing as you’re in such a rush that the traffic lights being on red seriously hampers your progress, theres another reason to keep them…impatient drivers such as yourself potentially being a risk.
Also, how do you propose pedestrians get across roads safely during the night? Or aren’t there any about?
Was this subject posted on April the 1st by any chance…if not, it should have been.
-
Willow Submitted 6 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Just how many pedestrians do you think there are around at night stupid. The odd drunk who probabley cannot see the lights anyway and will cross regardless. You may not be a very good driver but don’t class the rest of us like yourself.
-
TheBreaker Submitted 6 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
On a weekend when there are drunk people walking the streets and more cars on the road like taxis, this would be disastrous. I drive home from work past 12 every night and I wouldn’t like to do it without the lights working, in low visibility pedestrians would be road kill.
-
Willow Submitted 6 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Perhaps if your driving is that bad you should consider getting a push bike. In other European countries traffic lights simply blink amber to altert drivers to slow down. Why could this not work here.

I’m sorry Willow, for:
a) being so stupid,
b) not being as good a driver as yourself,
c) not seeing the extra benefits of you getting home 90 seconds earlier from work,
d) not realising that anarchy is the only solution to the problem.
If I can answer in my defence:
a) at least I can spell and form words into a coherent order,
b) as someone who does between 30k-40k miles per year, that’s debatable,
c) being selfish has never been a strong point of mine,
d) you form the party Mr Hitler and I’ll have no choice but to vote for you.
Maybe you should stop being abusive to people as it gets you nowhere. If I had the time, I could pick holes in every argument you put forward…thankfully for you, I don’t have the aforementioned time!
Have fun. Be happy. Don’t bore me.

Firstly Freedoddy you don’t need to appologies to me for being stupid or for not being as good a driver as me. You are probabley cleverer than me and a better speller. I am selfish and a bit of an aggitator. I hate people who are pompous and think that they are better than everyone else, which is the way you have come across so far. Today you showed for the first time that you can be normal. Try and act normal from now on or take stick from people like me.

I think that Freedoddy must be one of the most arrogant people ever to grace these columns.I think that an apology to Willow is in order. Leaving the amber light blinking between midnight & 6am is common practice in most countries in Europe, the Middle east and most of the Far East & Pacific Rim. As you approach the lights you slow down, look & if clear, proceed. Most drivers, even in third world countries, can master the techniques involved. Perhaps a drivng refresher course is in order.

Thanks for your support agitator. What do you think is the problem with people like Freedoddy.
-
noah Submitted 6 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Why not put the lights onto ‘shuffle’ mode. That would sort out the good drivers
-
Willow Submitted 6 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Please explain
-
noah Submitted 6 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
By making the lights all ‘twinkle’ randomly, this will save leccy, but still have a traffic control presence.Dangerous but fun.

A busy weekend night, the traffic lights have been turned off, up ahead a cross roads and two taxis going in different directions unable to see each other because of the 90’ angle. The taxis rushing about trying to earn as much as possible the lights turned off because of Willow’s law, the results disastrous.
Best leave it to you to clean up Willow and tell the families of the dead why the lights don’t need to be on.
-
Willow Submitted 6 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
I think that’s a bit OTT
-
theagitator Submitted 6 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
The trick is to slow down as you approach the lights & if clear proceed. If the rest of the world can do it, why not the drivers of Hull? Perhaps it’s a case of ‘I’m from Hull therefore you will not tell me what to do.’
-
theagitator Submitted 6 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Hi Willow, I suspect a lot of these people just like to see themselves in print. Also I get the impression that they are never wrong, a trait shared with many others in the Hull area. But not, of course, the West Hull villages.
-
Willow Submitted 6 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
The thing is you see agitator Freedoddy is proof reading everything I say to check on my spelling and grammer and knowing that he can pick holes in all of my arguments makes me feel like giving up. The whole thing is very upsetting.

This post appears to have gone off track, there will always be difference of opinion and spelling/grammar mistakes however it is time to stop the user bashing element of this topic and discuss traffic lights, which has been a highly amusing post.

If your going to debate a matter I thinks it’s important that you do think your right, else why try making others agree. Don’t you believe in your statements?
If we don’t believe in our selves why should anyone else?
…And if people didn’t disagree this would be a very boring site, lets hear it for differences in opinion.

Why aren’t pedestrians, not including young children, responsible for their own health and safety when out and about using the roads. As a driver when I park my vehicle I become a pedestrian. I do not think I become invincible and ignore moving vehicles. I feel I have a responsibility to myself and other road users to act correctly as a pedestrian and a driver. As a pedestrian I walk on the pavement, other than when I need to cross the road, then I have to think about where, when and how to carry this out without putting myself or anyone else with me, i.e children in a dangerous situation. Now to traffic lights in the early hours of the morning. If as a pedestrian I decide to cross the road with a red light to oncoming traffic I can do so reasonably safely, always being aware that there are the few who may ignore the red light. If on the other hand I see a green light for oncoming traffic I will still cross if there isn’t any moving approaching traffic, my decision. If the traffic lights are showing a flashing amber, which still warns that there is a danger for all drivers and pedestrians and we should take care, why is it such a silly idea. If a car driver pulls out of a side road/street and is in collision with a vehicle in the main road who is at fault? Both drivers have failed in their duty to act on the actions of other road users. To apply this to a traffic light controlled junction with a flashing amber would be the same principle. Drunken pedestrians walking home in the early hours of the morning very rarely cross at traffic lights, pedestrian crossing or other. It’s about time pedestrians, of which I am one, and again excluding young children, took more responsibility for their own actions and stopped blaming motorists for their inappropriate behaviour on the roads. Do we blame pub landlords/off-licences because we have too much to drink and have any type of accident, no.

Johnny Noah in reply to your above comments. You are right about believing in what you say. But people, myself included do sometimes post comments in order to wind people up. I personaly enjoy winding people up. But the important rule here is, if you can’t take it then don’t give it.

I’m afraid Willow that although I dont agree with Freedoddy’s attitude, I do agree with him that its dangerous to turn off the lights.
I dont know about driving culture in other countries but we have a boy racer problem in Britain. Regardless of how many responible drivers like yourself there are out there, there are plenty of others that I would not trust to drive responibly.
Some would not slow for the lights. Also some (if not many) of the people walking home between midnight and 4am will be drunk. And although its not the drivers fault, these drunk pedestians are still a danger to themselves, and giving them no safe way to cross by making them rely on their very clouded judgement and distorted sense of speeds and distances would be asking for trouble.
It may not be your fault if you killed someone who was too drunk to cross safely but you’d still feel pretty awful about it.
I’m sure it is annoying for you but surely a little irritation is better than increased road accidents?
-
Willow Submitted 6 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
I am not going to argue with you Robbo you have made a sensible and valid point. If ever you feel inclined go out in your car at that time of night and see if you still think the same.

Firstly, on the subject at hand. This subject almost isn’t debatable such is its pointlessness and obvious danger. think seriously for one second here…The year is 2008, traffic on the roads is increasing at an alarming rate, ferensway (as recently as last weeks sad accident shows)is probably the busiest, and maybe the most dangerous pedestrian road in the city for traffic. What does somebody suggest? "I know, lets switch off the traffic lights." Can anybody in all seriousness, think that a council will ever dream of, let alone think of, making it a reality? I’m therefore pointing out that theres not much debate to be had about it.
As for the "likes seeing himself in print". Lovely one that.I get on here once or twice a week maybe for about an hour in total and all of a sudden i’m an egomaniac. Certain users seem to live in here and the vast majority are excellent debaters. They are quality additions to the site. Others, unfortunately, tend to talk tripe in an effort to get their post count into the top rated section and, as i’ve said in the past, if I disagree with someone i’ll tell them straight.
I can take a joke and can have fun back but its a bit pitiful for people to whinge, whilst appearing to gang up on others. I may appear harsh at times but I don’t suffer idiots well, i’m afraid.
As heather mentions, try to keep to the subject and try not to accuse others of stupidity otherwise, if they’re anything like me, they’ll be forced to come out on the attack.
Anyway, as I said "Turning off Traffic Lights"
It’ll never happen. Next…

Traffic lights in Hull are designed and programmed to create maximum delay. They are part of Hull’s Traffic Congestion Creation Scheme (the TCCS). They stop traffic that might otherwise be moving, whereas at roundabouts, traffic that can move, does. Unless of course, as part of the TCCS, a pedestrian crossing is located immediately on the exit roads, causing the round a bout to block up. The effects of replacing a round a bout with traffic lights can be seen at the junction of Anlaby Road with Argyle Street and Rawlings Way. There are queues there all day, not just at rush hour.
-
Willow Submitted 5 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
What are your thoughts then Colombo about turning them off during the night.
-
Colombo Submitted 5 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
If you can’t have a round-a-bout, set the lights to flashing amber as used to be done in a lot of continental countries (they may still do). Alternatively, switch them off and follow the practice, I’m told, that used to be adopted in Argentina. Drivers approaching junctions blow their horns. The first to blow has the right of way. Apparently, in Buenos Aires, pedestrians off the pavement were regarded as ‘in play’.
-
Willow Submitted 5 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
I almost wish I hadn’t asked. Blowing horns at night!! This will set certain people off on one again. Nothing I can’t handle though. Certain people just cannot handle being given the Willow treatment.
As for pedestrians off the pavement, due you get more or less points if they are an OAP?

A Mounted policeman stopped at the traffic lights at the junction of Clough Road/Beverley Road, and next to him is a kid on his bike. The cop says to the kid: - "Nice bike you got there. Santa bring that to you?" - "Yeah." - "Tell Santa next year to put a taillight on that bike." - "Nice horse you got there. Did Santa bring that to you?" - "Yeah." - "Well, tell Santa next year to put the bum at the back of the horse, instead of on top!."

A Reliant Robin pulled alongside a Rolls-Royce at a traffic lights across from the Hull Daily Mail Office on Bev Road. "Do you have a car phone?" its driver asked the man in the Rolls. "Of course I do," was the haughty reply. "Do you have a fax machine?" The Rolls driver sighed. "I have that too." "Do you have a double bed in the back?" the Reliant driver wanted to know. Ashen-faced, the Rolls driver sped off. That afternoon, he had a mechanic install a double bed in his car. A week later, the Rolls driver passed the same Reliant, parked on the side of the road with its back windows fogged up and steam pouring out. The arrogant driver pulled over, got out of the Rolls and banged on the Reliant’s rear window. "I want you to know that I’ve had a double bed installed," bragged the Rolls driver. The Reliant driver rolled his window down and frowned at the Rolls driver. "You got me out of the shower to tell me that?"
