When Premier League Football finally comes to Hull

If the Tigers make it to the Premier League the spotlight will be on the city of Hull like never before. What will it mean to the city to finally play host to Premiership football? Will it bring an extra special feelgood factor to Hull and can the presence of the Tigers on a world stage (considering that the Premier league is watched all around the world) change perceptions of the city both within and outside of the city boundary? Will the air of negativity in the city that seems apparent from reading the comments on the main HDM website become a thing of the past? What will it mean for business and investment in Hull given that there is a clear link between the success of a football team and the city that it represents? Assuming that City do go up, lets keep fingers crossed we make a better impression than when we made our debut in the CCC in that infamous match with QPR.

I want City to go up.I also want City to stay up.It will raise the profle of Hull, but only if they do well.If City struggle and are a "bottom "club, that may be percieved by many as a failing city.Hull may be percived like Wigan,a team not "realy" suited as a "Premier team" whilst teams like Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forrest are seen by many as "they were and should be again" Premier teams because of that towns more known name and marketing potenial.City can raise the profile of Hull, but only if they do well.Lets get behind them all we can for the good of Hull, and the percection of Hull

One of the main benefits of City playing in the top flight would be the putting to bed for ever that Hull is a flat-capped 1950’s rugby town, which it hasn’t been since…er the flat-capped 1950’s. Danger is, that every game would be 3 – 0 the wrong way. Nice to see ‘em comfortably mid table though

What’s wrong with being a rugby town? I don’t think Hull will ever lose the rugby image with two top-flight teams and a great grass routs system. And why would we want to?
That aside, it would be great for the city.

Nothing, except that it isn’t one, save for the 9,000 who turned out to watch the recent derby. Rugby League is extremely small beer compared to Premiership football, in particular, and soccer in general.
-

Except that it isn’t one, what? A rugby town, it clearly is. There was only 9,000 at the last derby game because of the stadium, it was a sell out and could have been over double the attendance. Hull isn’t just a rugby town its thee rugby town. Whenever did football ask the last person leaving Hull to turn out the lights?
Hull will always be a rugby town even if that means it being a football and rugby town. No one thinks of Wigan as a football town.
-
barrow Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Only 9,000 went to the match, but a million from all over britain watched it on Sky Sports.Hull gets national coverage for the rugby league games, which is why Hull is perceived as a rugby town up north, just as Wigan and St.Helens are. Some Premier football teams like Bolton and Blackburn are perceived by some as former mill towns and do not have the "glamour"of Man U or Chelsea.City in the Premiership may get publicity, but Hull will still be seen as unglamoures by many. That does not matter to Hull rugby or football fans who want to see their teams doing well, and that is all that matters to them.Must go now and black lead the grate, put new newspapers squares in the outside loo,and feed the pigeons in case Mind being pops round for a pint of Hull Brewery Mild

Speaking as someone born and bred in Wigan and a Wigan Athletic fan, can I ask why we’re "not really suited" to the Premiership? I do believe we got there on merit having finished second in the 2004/05 season…a position that hull City are aiming for. The major challenge for Hull would, assuming they get promoted, to stay there. We’re enjoying our 3rd season in the Prem at the moment, having reached the League cup final in our first season…yes, we’ve punched above our weight.
The comparisons between Wigan and Hull are numerous, both being Rugby towns, both being regulars of the lower leagues for aeons, both having similar size stadiums. The major difference is the potential support that City can draw. Wigan is located less than 30 miles from Liverpool, Manchester, Blackburn, Bolton, Preston etc, so to get anywhere near a 20,000 attendance is a huge plus. For City, you have York, Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Scarborough in a similar catchment area…hardly great competition for the supporters quid.
I really hope City do make it to the top but if they do, you’d be better off being mindful that doing a "Derby" is a very real possibility. 17th place would be a realistic target (and the only one) to aim for if they do manage it.
Gotta say though, if they do make it, you won’t believe the feeling you’ll get…absolute disbelief and pride, take it from me.
Tigers are back!

Freedoddy, since I guess you might be related to ken with that name, can I add in a Kennish sort of joke? Maybe it was the way I read that line of your post but I couldn’t help it given the coastal location and suggest that perhaps grimsby at the very least would be the preferred choice for the "supporter squid". Now there’s a flavoursome filling for you. We know how much you love your pies over there and yes, most definitely, the Tigers are back :D PS. picture just for you in case u r feeling home sick.

"..in case Mind being pops round for a pint of Hull Brewery Mild.." – I’ll be round tomorrow bazz, providing that the charabanc doesn’t get stuck in the tram lines and I can find a reliable whippet – minder: Oh, I clean forgot – Tony Hancock’s on at Tivoli!. The perception of Hull as a "rugby" town is as outdated as the one that it is also a major fishing port. Non-locals, when you mention "Rugby League", think of Eddie Waring and the challenge cup final, when "the north has a day out in t’ smoke". Why can HKR’s ground only hold 9,000 – how many times does it get that many?: when do HFC get 23,000 attending? I think people who live in Leeds or Widnes may take issue that Hull is "thee" rugby town. Or even Castleford, one of Leeds’ "outlying villages".

Wigan pies are very nice, that’s one tick on the super leagues franchise list.

Even if they do go up this season they will be back down next season just as in the 60’s and 70’s when the likes of Ken Wagstaff played

I think that if you add the average Rovers gate to the average Gateshull gate, then you’ll get something around the average Hull City gate.
Good luck to City, but if they do go up, and do badly, watch the average gate begin to fall.

i think it is great for the commnity of hull to get into top flight football.we already have two rugby teams in in top flight entertainment we just need the backing of the local goverment to back all teams with there efforts.

Bleedin ell! Some of you lot are a bit negative. I’m not even from round here and even i’ve got more faith in them than that.
Its a massive challenge for every team to stay in the premier in their first season. There’s nothing to say Hull cant do it though. Just look at how the Premier teams have faired against the lower leagues in the FA cup. They’re not unbeatable and city will have the opportunity to buy some more players.
If you look at the premier league at the moment there are only 5 points in it from 4th bottom to 5 places up. If its close down there next year then its anyones guess who’ll stay up.
Good luck to them and I hope they do it.

If they yo-yo up and down for a few seasons and not waste money on big players they will make a hell of a lot of money and be able to make a serious attack on the mid table. I think you get 10 million for getting relegated from the prem to stop you from going into administration. If you don’t waste money on players you can let that build up and then make a full on attack, but then how much money do you really need to spend on players to make an impact?
-

You get £30,000,000 for relegation to the championship. As an indicator of the ludicrousness of this, the winners of the European Champions’ League get £27,000,000.
-

Mind being is right.you go up and come down with £30 million. So you have an advantage to buy players to go up again. And if Mind Blowing remembers the Tivoli,he must be and old chap like me who liked the panto at the Palace

I am looking forward to tasting the fabled wigan pies next season flavoured with football seasoning to be served up with 3 points at the JJB. I wonder if the City Council will erect signs on the city boundary with "home of premiership football and super league rugby"? Now where did that idea come from?
-
Dally Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Some decent signage to the KC Stadium wouldn’t come amiss first of all. And if visiting Wigan, beat the "Wigan Walk" and get yourself a decent supply of Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls, a rare treat.

Speaking of the road to Wigan (pier) then, I have heard there is such a delicacy know as the Wigan Wedding Cake. is this just myth or has anyone sampled it?

On the subject of Wigan Butty, I was once in my local "pie shop" (ie. bakery) when I saw a bizarre sight. Heather Small (M People fame) was at the front of the queue buying one. This is essentially a Pie (meat and potato preferably) placed between a breadcake (we call it a barmcake). She was living with Shaun Edwards in my village at the time but it was good to see that sge was doing her best to integrate into the local community.
Quite a surreal sight though to see, at that time, a world famous pop star with a huge tower of a hairstyle opting for a wigan kebab instead of a healthy lettuce sandwich.
PS They are the best pies around!

Won’t it be super with the countries media upon Kingston upon Hull if Hull City do go up. All the yobs, swigging from cans, swearing to all around, dropping litter & yes insisting on removing their shirts when the sun shines. Why do these morons think we want to be associate with them?
-

don’t be so negative penny.
-
theagitator Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Penny does not paint a pretty picture of Hull fans, but unfortunately, all too true.I have been to KC Stadium a few times and can say that the vast majority of the fans are ok, there is a sizeable minority who can only be classed as animals. These are the people that the press will latch onto.
-
EdddGeee Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
and of course, these type of fans are unique to hull city.
-
Travellingman Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
I think the overall benefit to the city would be very good, as when Hull FC and HKR did well the tv exposure made a difference to the negative press Hull were receiving. On a personal level I will not be jumping on the bandwagon, my heart will always be at Boothferry Park before the madness of multi million pound transfers took over
-
ChrisHolmes Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Penny has clearly made a mistake and was definitely referring to Rangers fans. When The Tigers head to Old Trafford you will see Manchester awash with black and amber just as it was last wednesday. We will take over Piccadilly Gardens and Exchange Square (where they have a big screen that is popular with the locals) and we will NOT trash the town like the Rangers did.
-
ChiefDragon Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Surely Penny was refering to the element in all football fans who follow their teams, its not just Hullites who swill beer from cans and get their shirts off,is it?
Lets hope this much spoken of (by you) big screen in Manchester is working then Chris, when Tigers hit the town.LOL ;)

And the world already feels a brighter, better place.
As I walked out to get my newspaper this morning, the crunching sound of the broken glass ‘neath my feet seemed to change into a steady chant of ‘City, City, City’ with every step. I looked down, no, not at the drift of smashed bottle and beerglass, but at a promise of the streets awash with diamonds! The pools of vomit and urine that had been thoughtfully placed in each shop doorway by celebrant individuals the previous evening reflected the lambent sunlight, casting soft rainbows onto the shop windows. A black (and amber) bird trilled a morning chorus, seemingly welcoming the brave new dawn that the city has awoken to. My heart almost burst with pride as I came to realise that I too was alive on this brave morn!

It’s a positive thing to note that there was NO trouble from fans, no aggro of any sort, and that Tigers supporters were a credit to the city. Maybe good organization and policing helped but it’s still something to be proud of.

Well, I don’t know about you but on my regular journey from Manchester on Transpennine I think I’ll be laughing all the way THROUGH L**ds!
