Which academic subjects carry the most prestige and which are worth little more then a signed photo of the latest reality TV star?
Which is your favourite or which would you most like to study and where does it land on the prestige scales?

Why "prestige"? There have always been degree subjects which were regarded as worth more than others, with Oxbridge at the top of the list for anything. Thirty years ago I did a degree in English Literature. At the time the mickey mouse subject was seen as Sociology. Now it’s Media Studies. But there are many degrees now which don’t require the student to study anything in any depth; you just accumulate modules and credits in bits of subjects. I’m sure the subject that requires most work is Medicine, but any science degree carries prestige. Personally, I’d like to study economics in more depth.

I have seen a lot of people go to uni, come away with a degree and then completely fail to get a job with it. Different degrees don’t get the same respect and perhaps they shouldn’t but some don’t appear to get any at all. So I was wondering how people saw them.
Personally as a long distance runner I wouldn’t mind learning something along the spots science path as I think it would be very rewarding. I doubt sport science rates very highly amongst degrees as it has a jock vibe about it.

History…as A.J.P Taylor said, it’s the best liberal education you can get.

As I perceive their order of importance: 1 Maths, 2 Physics, 3 Biology, 5 Literature, most of the rest of the higher subjects can be pure self indulgence. I love history, but it is riddled with old and new propaganda. The day Europe began the process toward a common community, they started rewriting history. Many top lads n lasses have wondered if too much "Knowledge" gets in the way of the more intuitive sciences.

But that’s an order of importance not prestige. And I think you’d find that modern history courses want you to analyse your sources and unlock the truth.

When asked what my hobbies are, I often reply that I have an interest in Ferro-Equinology. The unknowing nod their heads and make remarks such ‘How interesting’. The knowing just smile.

Back in the mid sixties a friend of mine who was the only child of very academic parents failed to make the grade to do the course he wanted at university. The only course his grades would get him on was sociology. Now replaced by English as the easy option I’ve been told.
In the fifties a failed student solicitor had to save his family’s face; he became a vicar. He was ‘called’ to my parish where his ministry was a right pain in the butt.

My cousin’s husband (in the 70’s)was so clever that he finally became a uni professor, when the uni he worked at started cutting staff he was one of the first to go, as he was highly paid,he applied for many jobs over the next few month’s but was unsuccessful, finally he applied for a street sweeping job with the local council and was told he was over qualified for the position. All he wanted to do was feed his family, he finally became a market gardener running his own business. His professorship credentials? English Lit and history, not much use to him now.

I have looked at this post numerous times and pondered on a reply but I am still at a loss as to the subject matter. I fail to see how academic subjects can be ranked prestigiously. I would imagine that the value of any qualification at degree level is of equal importance to the person in possession, Unless we are talking about bragging rights.
