No, not the environmental lobby group but the green peace in our own city. What’s your favourite ‘green-space’? Where do you go to relax? We are lucky here in Hull to have some lovely parks, but they aren’t the only ‘green-spaces’ in the area. It could be a patch of grass at the front of your home or even a piece of wasteground (wildlife loves these!). One of my favourite green-spaces measured a couple of feet long by a foot across – it was a plastic window-box that a pair of Robins decided to set-up home and rear a family in! See photo above. Maybe it’s your window-box, backyard, roof-top garden , your own garden or your neighbour’s garden? Even cemeteries can be places of interest, – it is surprising how much life there is in a cemetery!! The famous poet Philip Larkin was a regular visitor to our local cemeteries…I’d love to hear about your favourite green-places and a photo would be even better.

John Betjeman, the former Poet Laureate, said the most peaceful and inspiring place in Britain, was the cemetry on Spring Bank West.

I have to agree with John Betjeman. Here is a photo of the grave of Dr Kelburn King. King was a prominent Dr in Hull and also served the surrounding areas during the Victorian era. He was the Dr which looked after Hull born Ripper Suspect Robert D’Onston Stephenson in the 1860’s after his incident at Flamborough. (Read my article here, http://www.casebook.org/dissertations/rip-flamborough.html )

I visited the cemetery to find a grave for the Dawber family, but as it was so overgrown I never did find it! I took maps and plans and was unable to find anything, as it is so overgrown.

It’s a lovely place and really relaxing. Another nice little cemetery is the Air Street cemetery, which I spent many lunch times sat on the wall during the summer of 2000!

I also love East Park, Hull to Hornsea Track and Hull to Withernsea Track.

Very interesting Colombo and Mike Covell. If we can’t get any peace in the cemetery, then where can we get it? Sadly, even these places can’t guarantee any (unless you’re a ‘resident’ if you know what mean) I’ve walked through Western cemetery when a group of kids were tearing around on a moped! Mother’s day can be hair-raising as well – you need pelican crossings in some cemeteries these days – the number of cars actually in some cemeteries on mothering Sunday is unbelievable. Oh, and fatpuss, get your eyes off those Robins!

BobCarter, I like Robins. I would much prefer to swipe a paw at a Magpie!!!!

There is nothing more peaceful for a Robin than when all the magpies leave before full-time.

A big park, East Park can get really busy with the Slashboat, wonderful animal compound and walk-through aviary and Swan paddle-boats. If you do want a quiet corner to sit and have a sarny than you can usually find a spot – it’s such a big park.

Bransholme might be one of Europe’s largest housing estates but it is surrounded by some wonderful open green spaces. Here’s a picture of a lone angler at the Bransholme Fishing Pond

The river Hull provides miles of walking and you’ll need this pooch’s energy to do it all!
