John Barrowman 'in search of his gayness'

Did anyone watch the programme on beeb 1 at nine tonight. John Barrowman went on a search to find out if he was born ‘gay’ or if his upbringing had anything to do with it.
Very interesting programme I always thought him to be over powering and bigheaded and my hubby can’t stand him, but we both watched with interest, turns out that a study in America has come up with the theory (one of many)that because his mother had two sons older than him that the testoserone levels she produced were weakened by the two older brothers, thereby making it 60% more likely that John would be gay.
But we thought that theory could be challenged by anyone who has given birth to two or more sons who have turned out to be heterosexual. My aunt had three sons none of whom are ‘gay’.
What do the forum members think??

Yes Free it could,I’m just saying that like all theories it could be disproved. John was really happy with explanation and he and his family are really close knit which is lovely. It changed my opinion of him from the bighead I originally thought he was to a well grounded and happy man.

I quite like John Barrowman.
Although it beats me why someone tries to investigate whether people are born gay. Its like saying that someones a born murderer/rapist/wife beater.

Don’t get me wrong Free I have his CD’s and love his acting performances, I just felt he was a bit over the top in ‘Joseph and Nancy’,but after watching the programme I realised that’s just the way he is full of life and eager to please. From what I understand he wanted to find this out for himself and approached the beeb, I could have got that wrong of course, I tuned in 5 minutes after the programme had started. I might watch it again on iplayer tomorrow.

I saw the end of the programme. One thing that seemed to come out of it was, that despite all their attempts, they have not yet found a single shred of creditable evidence to support this theory. They didn’t pose the question, "Are humans the only species to display this trait?"

I never watched the show but the theory sounds quite intresting. Studying serial killer cases, I often wonder if those that kill are a product of society or wether they are just born to do it.

I reckon it’s probably a combination of many many things that determines whether you are straight or gay. Maybe if you are exposed to less testosterone inthe womb, or have older brothers, or have longer index fingers, or whatever else they looked at, you are more likely to be gay, but i think it’s nurture as well as nature- if you’re raised in a household or a society that is more permissive you are more likely to explore any curiosities you have than if you are in a stricter society. I reckon you have to be biologically predisposed to beign gay, AND be allowed to realise it for yourself in your adolescence. I don’t think you can be ‘turned’ gay if you aren’t born that way, but you can fail to realise it depending on your situation.

The old nature vs nurture debate?
I dont buy the low levels of testosterone theory. How many of your grandfathers were part of huge families. My grandfather was the last of 7 brothers and I’m pretty sure he’s not gay. There would be many more gay people (and a lot less of us grandkids!) if this theory was correct I think.
And how does this account for gay women? More testosterone than usual?
I think its down to your experiences as you grow up. Things shape your personality. Why do some men prefer blondes over brunettes? Something must of happened at some stage that makes that individual more attracted to blondes. I think its the same (if amore complicated) with Homosexuality. The more open our society is becoming – the wider range of influences people experience as they are growing up. This determins who they are and who they find attractive.
Thats what I think anyway. I definitely dont buy into people being born a certain way. Hetrosexuals, homosexuals, serial killers…. whatever. What you experiance makes you into the person you are.

Why does he need to dicover what makes him gay?A heteorosexual doesn’t need to discover why they are straight and I thought gays wanted to be treated like a normal person.

I’ve no idea Swamp but it was a good programme.
That was the part of the theory that my hubby and I said could easily be disproved because of the big families our parents and grand-parents had Robbo. The americans are spending thousands of dollars on the research though.

Makes you wonder who’s actually spending it, and with what motive.

Well my hubby’s theory Colombo is that if they can isolate the gene that causes (for want of a better word)gayness, maybe they want to stop it (the gene)developing at the time of conception thereby no gays. But as I said why would they pick on gays they do no-one any harm, and paeodophiles would be a much better target or murderer’s. Hubby’s not homophobic by the way and neither am I,live and let live.

I agree with you, ChiefDragon. I just thought there might have been more urgent areas of research to spend the money on.

Robbo…I thought the prevailing idea was that homosexuality was simply a case of nature and nothing to do with upbringing or cultural influences?
