Looks like the latest twist in our goverments aim to control EVERYTHING we do is taking another stroll, NOW they are stopping it via the network providers (ISP)READ BELOW!!!
THIS MEANS YOU WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD MUSIC OR DVD’S…YOU WOULD HAVE TO BUY THEM FROM A SHOP!!!!

It doesn’t mean that you’ll not be able to download at all. It just means that you’ll have to pay. What’s so wrong with that?
-
TheBreaker Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
This is just to scare people, the amount of control they have for screening downloads is minimal. But i agree you should buy them anyway.

Un/fortunately the techies will always be one-step ahead. You can now download a gadget which hides your IP address while downloading data. And then there are the sites which require you to register, so you are using their IP address. It’s the many headed monster syndrome, and the more the government tries to control it, the more determined the anarchists will get.
Essentially it’s greed vs greed.

I cannot understand how people seem to think that downloading files, which should be paid for and are not, is fine when using the internet, yet would not dream of going into a shop and stealing the same cd/dvd/program/
The internet seems to have the ability to change some peoples morals.

My friends are all DJ’s and produce CD’s of their sets and post them on file sharing sites. I can then visit these sites and download their sets at my leisure. We tried sending the files via MSN etc but it’s so much quicker and easier using a file sharing site. Will this move by the Government stop me doing that?
-
YourMailWill Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Sharing these files is illegal as it contravenes the copyright laws and the rights the record label have over the recorded material (assuming they are playing copyrighted material, of course).
Further broadcast or distribution of said material whether in whole or in part (eg in the mix) is expressly forbidden, even if it is not done for financial gain.
-
MikeCovell Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
So would that mean a banning of DJ’s in clubs then?
-
Robbo Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
No Mike, because all clubs should be paying PRS fees which covers this.
I’ve dj’d a few times when there’s been someone from PRS there to write down what I play. Somehow they work out from that how much the club should pay.
-
YourMailWill Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Glad you raised that issue: pubs, clubs, cafes, shops and anywhere else that plays copyrighted music pay an annual fee for the right to do so. It is called PPL which refers to both the Public Performance Licence and the company which issues them, Phonographic Performance Limited. The licence fees are redistributed to record labels. Apparently they conduct surveys to monitor which songs are played most often, in order to assign more money to the most popular.
-
YourMailWill Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Looks like me and Robbo were typing at the same time! I thought PPL was for pre-recorded music and PRS was for live? Either way, the venues pay for a licence which gives them the right to play the music.
-
YourMailWill Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
There is a similar system in place for Radio stations and the like, although I believe they have to declare and pay a fee for each and every song they play, in recognition of the fact that it reaches such a wide audience.

I was aware of the licence for radio, and some years ago when I was manager of a video store we had to update our licence to show audio and show video.
What about a DJ’s set, played in a club but released as a tape pack? I know several of the industries top dance events do this such as Raindance, United Dance and Helterskelter.

Looks like i’ve got my ACRONYM’s mixed up.
-
YourMailWill Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
The more offical of these will go through the appropriate channels and will secure licences to redistribute the music. I suspect many of the tapes sold from the back of an XR3i outside Donny Dome wil probably not be legit.
However, chasing lost revenues from unpaid PRS/PPL is a long and expensive process, and so the labels that publish the tunes often won’t bother in many instances. Particularly as the kind of mixtapes you describe probably have a positive effect in raising the profile of their artists / tunes. You can’t buy that kind of publicity.
-
MikeCovell Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
I was thinking of legitimate stores such as the DJ’s shop in Hepworth Arcade. It’s opposite Baxters and sell’s tapes from such evenings as R-House, alongside events such as Dreamscape and Distruxtion!
-
YourMailWill Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
The same probably applies.
It’s quite a specialised market so I doubt they’re turning over thousands of copies. Also I would have thought it’s a tight-knit community of producers, DJs, promoters and labels. In fact I bet a lot of people do more than one of the things on that list, and so they sort it out among themselves… As a consumer I don’t think you have anything to worry about buying or owning them.
Interesting to hear that in this digital age they are still putting them out on cassette.
-
MikeCovell Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
They sell them on CD but Cassette is still a popular format for live events! It is a close knit community with everyone knowing everyone’s name. I wonder if there are tapes of my radio appearances out there? I could be looking at Royalties!
-
YourMailWill Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
PRS/PPL exists more to stop organised operations whereby people rip off thousands of CDs a week of the latest chart albums and sell them on at markets, carboot sales, and dodgy pubs. Like I said before, the positive aspect of having your tune on one of these tapes probably outweighs not receiving a cut of the profits.

I am aware you HAVE to keep it Formal & legaly correct when replying to a thread like this, I know hundreds of people on the net & i dont think i know ANYONE that hasnt copied or shared a file!! Anyone that hasnt has missed out WHY buy a cd when you can d/l it & see what its like before you buy it..? as for complations (Albums) in the 80’s & 90’s i often spent £20/30 per week buying cd’s only to find they had in fact 5 songs that i liked & the rest was rubbish so in my view the artists & the goverment have had there "Drink" now its our turn to benefit from software like these, To put it simple "i dont personaly think it will stop" there is too many Clued up people that have a decent idea how to get around this… Although the goverment DIDNT make this law it is also Finacialy in there favour to uphold it due to tax on cd’s…

Just answering the question Mike posed, but fair comment.
Your Mail does not condone illegal file sharing or copyright contraventions

bigpwher: That argument doesn’t really stand up anymore. Five years ago you could use the argument that it introduces new music to people who then go to buy it but now all that new music can be accessed legally and free on the bands myspace site. You can listen to it there before you decide to buy it.

Most of the major record labels and motion picture studios have channels on youtube so you can watch and listen to music videos, see trailers, and catch glimpses of official interviews and making of’s, all before you part with your hard earned cash.

I thought you could download these files as long as you didnt make copies (personal use)? When does this take effect? cos ill download as much as I can meanwhile? Failing that someone will find a way and still sell copies on walton street market !
-
bigphewrader Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
MarkLindsay" GOOD POINT!! (Failing that someone will find a way and still sell copies on walton street market) there is allways that!!
simply buy a high end external hard drive" & ram as much as you can onto it that you like…then you can transfer as much as you like on to a cd for as long as you like… Besides i dont think this monitoring is going to take effect just yet but its "In the post"..

Maybe I’m being a bit thick, but I just cannot understand the argument here. If you download stuff such as music and software without paying for it, then it’s not big and it’s not clever. It’s theft. There is no moral distinction between intellectual property and a CD on the racks in HMV. If I walk in HMV and try to walk out with a copy of ‘Workingmans Dead’ without paying for it, I’ll get charged with theft. The same should happen to anyone downloading ‘free’ music. Someone has invested time, money and intellect in writing the music, why should anyone get it for free?
-
MarkLindsay Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Thats the thing .Its free ! people dont want to pat £14.00 for a cd. Thats why sites such as Limewire and Bearshare exist! The people think its daylight robbery to pay the ammount so hence the filesharing sites.

Its time these illegal operations were clamped down on, a few hefty fines and eqipment confiscation,
Lazarus your statement…. Un/fortunately the techies will always be one-step ahead. You can now download a gadget which hides your IP address while downloading data.
Don’t waste your time, you can’t hide it from those that wish to check it.

Quote Mark "people dont want to pat £14.00 for a cd. "
I don’t think that the price is relevant. If some people can get away with stealing, which is what free downloading is, then they will do. £14 or 14p, it would make no difference.
-

Actually they dont which is why these downloadable site where created. Dont worry though its not you "the people" are stealing from. Bet I get qouted on "the people" next lol

I think that people have generally got so used to being able to download music, films and the like for free and for so long that the general population seems to look at it as commonplace and actually expect it to remain free. It is looked on by so many people as their right to have all of these free things in life. So much is taken for granted nowadays.
-
Chromosome23 Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Quote Mark "Actually they dont which is why these downloadable site where created"
But that’s my point. Trying to claim that the cost of a CD is prohibitive is a red herring. It’s not the cost that is the factor, it’s the fact that people want something for nothing.

copyright subject is VERY scetchy, on your contract it states you CANNOT or shouldnt download anything illegal,so thousands of us have & nothing has happened so does that mean that "KC" is or HAS not kept a record on us all..? who’s to blame them who download it or them that let it slide..?
-
Lazarus Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Who’s to blame, the people who buy illegal cds, or the people who copy them? The people who buy fake designer labels or the people who make them? Essentially, if you download torrents, or full copies, the only criminal is the person downloading. Although, the only victim is the artist. So, if you were to get a cease & desist, your only defence would be, why is the publisher prosecuting instead of the artist?
