What do Your Mail users think of the proposal to spend over £6million revamping Victoria Square and Queen’s Gardens?
What improvements would you like to see in this area?

The first and biggest improvement that could be made in victoria square would be to get rid of the monstrosity known as ‘the big screen’, it is ugly, noisy, useless and distracting. I do not believe that we are living in a city of couch potatoes, yet this is the atmosphere given to victoria square by the screen.

Isn’t the square the perfect place for the Market? It’s fairly obvious Trinity Sq. will never have a market back although it was good to see on our last visit to Hull that somebody has had the vision to expose the original glazed ceiling in the back of Market Hall.

Put in ground level toilets so that my hubby can use them and get rid of the big screen.Does anyone look at it?

Get rid of the big screen! And put in stocks so we can egg the corporate despots who will no doubt be syphoning off that money for their houses in Spain.
Corona.

Fill in the ponds in queens garden and install a facility for open air entertainment. Close the roads around Vicky square to all traffic including the biggest polluters known as buses. Give Vicky herself a covering of gold leaf, that would really make her stand out. If the roads are pedestrianised that would make enough room for a decent market.

A face-lift for Queen Vickie! But will she be amused?

Why fill in he ponds? It is nice to have a water feature in the gardens. As for a stage, there is the Mike Ronson stage there.good idea to close the road for busses, but where will they go to?Agree a market may work, but many traders today have large stalls which is why they go to Walton street where they can park their vans behind their stalls Get rid of the tatty spud van and mobile phone stall, and install some semi permanant attractive stalls for local small traders. It needs breaking up with a few flower beds with seating around and a pleasant water feature Big screen should not be on all day Only on for opera or a special show.Maybe a small kids play area in Queens Gardens where dad and kids can play whilst mum shops.Put aside one million for more events/concerts in Queens Gardens. Why not a replica of the Town Gate as a showpiece entrance to the Old Town, and lit up at night? Agree that new toilets at ground level are needed,so why not get of the dated raised section in the Square with Queen Vic on,and use that "new space" for something better and more attractive today, but still have the Queen somewhere as a focal point in the square, maybe with a new attractive water feature around her.Do not design around what exists, but be bold and design for the whole square again.Statues can be resited.Queen Vic Square is THE focal point in Hull.Queen Vic Square can be a very nice area for future generations to stop in,sit in ,listen in and enjoy in if the vision is right.

Get rid of the big screen.
DO NOT fill in the ponds – apart from the attraction of them, what about all the wildlife? Fish, mallards, moorhens etc. etc., all of which live and breed there. It’s wonderful to have that in the middle of the city centre.
-
MikeCovell Submitted about 1 month ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
I agree with Medsec, this inner city area is unique and a fantastic place to sit and relax.
The square was once an important part of the city and was a focal point for funerals and parades. It would also be a good idea to build better toilets but I can’t see this happening as the council would not want them obstructing people’s views.
Whatever happened to the idea of building a large metal and glass structure over the statue of Queen Victoria?

The ponds in QG should remain, but be spruced up somewhat. I’d like to see the fountains in full working order.
The Mick Ronson stage (and the semi-derelict ex cafe/storage shed behind it) should be torn down and replaced with something bigger and better, after consultation with people who know about these sort of things. We’ve had this on another thread a while back- the current stage is almost never used as it is tiny. They often put a temporary stage in front of it. If I was related to Mick Roson I would consider it an insult, not a tribute.
I say the screen could be showing unique content 24 hours a day. By that I mean local bands and filmmakers work, slideshows of local artists work, and photos/video from local events. They do do a little of that but only here and there in between the standard BBC 1 stuff. Use it as a rolling advert for the good points about Hull. If I want to watch Bargain Hunt I’ll stay at home.
I agree there should be more special events and screenings of opera/ballet/whatever. And there should be some permanent seating as well as more provision for temporary seating when the special events are on.
I’d like to see both areas used for more events, markets concerts, displays, whatever. Even if all that means is using some of the budget on the logistics of these events, instead of building anything permanent, I think it will be a great benefit to the city.

It is just tinkering around and achieving little. The only process that will improve all of this city is a rebuilding of our once diverse and energetic manufacturing base.
We need more skilled people. We have missed out on so much and for such a great length of time. We have tried countless times to attract new industry, but our reduced skills base holds us back all the time.
Better skilled people are the answer ( I care not what age, colour, creed, race, local, immigrant or asylum seeker). Only the skilled will bring new industry. Industries bring jobs and more money. More money=more shops=more attraction=more visitors= money=more jobs=more and better buildings.
There is not one single inhabitant of this city and surrounding area who does not know this and there lies their frustration.

Easier said than done though, ART. Unfortunately ‘Industry’ ie manufacturing has been in decline in the UK for decades. It is cheaper to import many items than make them here. If Hull wants to succeed in the future it needs to become a centre of excellence in IT, webdesign etc, both in the courses taught in colleges and at the Uni, and in the jobs market open to those who complete those courses. And unfortunately, I can’t see that happeneing while the Karoo cloud still hovers above.

Ah. Karoo… Twitch… grimace. Good points. Youngest is spending a lot of time and energy retraining in IT.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the toilets aren’t listed buildings.
Those modern bus stands need to go, and something could be done to make Beverley Gate more of a feature. Perhaps some kind of living museum, incorporating dock and city life throughout the ages.

Absolutely ART (I like that), it’s a shameful disgrace what this Council & central government have allowed to happen to this City; a City that once filled the coffers of the Bank of England. To see the industrial and manufacturing bedrock all cities thrive upon slowly decline. I once heard central government had written off this city by considering there are "few options for a deindustrialising city". We only have to look at Liverpool, Cardiff, Sheffield and mining areas to see how much a concerted effort by all can revitalise and transform a written-off area; written-off because it does not hold as much capital value to the economy.
This city is in a prime location for Europe, has a diversified &
mainlyredundant population. It’s not just investment, but a concerted effort by all to change the course this city is set upon. As Harvey said, investment in the newer industries is key, but without adequate skills in training and education, it is relatively pointless attracting the capital investment needed. Forcing Lincoln & Humberside out did not help!My overall complaint about the course this city is on, is that with attracting bigger and bigger corporations and commercial chains, they are not putting the necessary profit back into the city; there is no structural reinvestment beyond rates. I raised this point over the building of a bridge to connect both sides of Beverley Road for both Endeavour and Stepney. They could use Robin Hood tactics of demanding a contribution from, say Netto & MacDonalds, or implement a 15% sales tax. Of course, I can still hear the laughing from the reply. If we are to continue on this course, then these chain stores need to contribute more from our multi-million profits.

If you want to improve the square, don’t think about what can be added. Think about what can be taken away. For starters, how about that chip shop next to Ian Blowers Diamonds? I’m sure that people looking at the diamonds and watches in the window don’t want to be plagued with a smell akin to that of the last pair of socks at the bottom of the laundry basket while they do so, and it attracts the chav element. Same with the big screen, get rid of that, too. Put it on Preston road, or some other hellhole away from the shoppers, where the local winos will appreciate it, or even better, just sell it and recoup some of the totally unreasonable cost. Thirdly, get the toilets below the statue up and running, so people can relieve themselves without breaking the public decency laws. And finally, while I’ve seen plenty of glitzy buildings going up in Hull in recent years, the city centre still stinks to high heaven, as if a cauldron of sewage were brewing beneath it. At least I can be assured that, if I should pass out from the stench, my fall will be cushioned by all the litter.

Barrow speaks a lot of sense.
Keep the big screen, but let’s try to make a bit more of it. Use it for special events, make it more of an occassion with temporary seating and tables provided. Maybe screen a few football matches? I dunno how that squares with Sky’s stranglehold, but surely some deal could be arranged. And not just sport stuff either…what’s wrong with opera as Barrow says?
And on no account even think of filling in the QG ponds. If that gets announced, then I will be manning the barricades!
-
Lazarus Submitted about 1 month ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
I think they did the opera thing last year, or the year before. The chavs wandering into town were that confused, they didn’t know whether to take the mick or sit down and join them in the expectation of something interesting happening.
-
TheEmperor Submitted about 1 month ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Lol, Lazarus. Why didn’t they just get lost, and leave their betters to enjoy the show? Of course, they wouldn’t have the decency to do that.
-
JGould Submitted about 1 month ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Laz, I find it interesting that someone who is so vehemently opposed to all things bourgeois and middle class, and seems so urgent to assure the forum of his working class credentials, should also be scathing against ‘chavs’. I believe you have spoken less than favourably about students, and yet earlier you told us you had studied yourself. Who are you, really?
-
Lazarus Submitted about 1 month ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
I don’t think I’ve ever asserted my working-class credentials. For all this forum knows I may have extremely wealthy parents in Bishop Burton, and indolently live of their earnings.
So I don’t like drunked morons who use intimidation and violence to get what they want. Lenin despised the Bolsheviks as an inbred ignorant race of peasants. Not really sure of your point here JG, I suppose I should respect all lower- working-class people irrespective of how they behave in everyday life? There’s good and bad on all levels of society.
And with regards your last point, what’s your point? From my experience about 70% of students hardly put any effort into what university demands of them. Are you another Eddddddd JGould; someone with an opinion lacking substance?

The whole square definately needs a revamp there are so many beautiful buildings and features it needs to be done in keeping with them. A market two or three times a week would bring people into the city to spend. Keep the screen I like it, when they put on a show people actually talked to each other.

‘when they put on a show people actually talked to each other’ – when did this happen? Even if it did its a once in a blue moon moment, is that worth sacrificing the peacefull nature of this pedestrianised area with constant mindless drivel being forced upon us that we can tune into (or not) at any time from the comfort of our own homes.
-

The Ballet Swan Lake,it did not "sacrifice the peaceful nature of this pedestrianised area" It added to it.
