Silly Signs

They’re everywhere, aren’t they. Road signs, traffic signs, street signs, shop signs, warning signs… Some of them are useful, important helpful. Others are just plain daft.Silly signs of our times. Others can be baffling or amusing. Have you seen any silly signs lately? Send your photos in! Here’s three to get us started. The ‘Make Your Mind Up’ one is near Sunk Island and is maddeningly contradictory – on one hand we’re told NO FISHING and on the other ‘CAST WITH CARE’! The ‘Traffic Diverted’ was seen in the river Hull. I thought the ‘No Smoking’ one was amusing and spotted it in the city centre.

Just a couple of my favorites. Also, a handy tip. If you can’t be bothered hanging around to read a public notice, rip it from the lamp-post and take it home to read. Then, return it at your leisure.

When I worked at Ideal Standard, some forty years ago, the Marquis Boiler had a label which was tied to another label reading, ‘Please remove this label before using’.

What’s wrong with my replies?
-
MarioTheGibbon Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
my previous reply is intended as an ironic comment on the interchangeability of "have" and "of" in the modern colloquial argot, and is a reference to the misuse of the word "off" in an earlier post. it is not a correction of spelling or terminology. please accept this humble offering in the spirit with which it was intended.

I remember seeing a bag of nut’s with the warning "This product may contain nuts"
Another fave is on certain foodstuff’s it says "Serving Suggestion" and shows the food in a bowl or on a plate. What else are we to do, serve it in a hat!

I am fully aware of your semantics Eddd, but I was waiting for a curious explanation from Colombo. Besides which, I’m spoiling for a fight today. I wrapped things up at 3am this morning and woke at 7am to travel to mother’s to fix her drainpipe. I’ve wasted 3 month’s piddling about with Flex2, only to turn to Microsoft’s alternative, which I could have done 3 months ago. I’ve got a heat sore on my rump, Tesco’s didn’t have any blueberry muffins, and the price of evap on Anlaby Road is 64p! Oh, and James Blunt sounds like a neutered cat. Arrrgghhh!!!

They are certainly strange signs, HarryDownes. Here’s one I took at Hull Fair. I think the chap on the left might require a little more than first aid!

Looks pretty dark and dismal to me!
-
MikeCovell Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Bob, I wish to remove that sign and put it at the boundry to Hull as a notice to people on the way in!
-

Spotted this one on Holderness Road: DJ CAZ IS SINGLE! FROM AGE 18 TO WATEVER. DETAILS AT BAR. Someone has chalked an arrow to the ‘18’ and written (SHOE SIZE)!
-

We saw that as we passed Shakers on wednsday on our way into west Hull.
-
BobCarter Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
You mean to say it’s been up for more than a day?! I saw it at about tea-time Thursday, 7th Aug. There was no one sat at the window so perhaps he’s got lucky?

I took this of a duck which was a regular visitor to Bob Carver’s chippy in the old town. Luckily Duck is not on that menu!

This must be the cheapest accommodation in the area, surely? At only £ per night! Spotted on Spring Bank.
-

I spotted this sign locally. I know I’m forgetful but even I couldn’t forget my car – could be something to do with the fact that I don’t own one!
-
BobCarter Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Less of a ‘silly sign’ perhaps and more of a badly situated one considering the state of the surrounding buildings! This advertisement for HDM’s Property Guide might have been better placed? I took the photo this week-end.

Hi Bob, As requested, The National Picture Theatre in Hull was built in 1914 but took a direct hit during a raid on the nearby docks on 17th July 1941.
The cinema was open during the raid, but luckily everyone got out, and there was no casualties.
It is believed to be the last surviving example of a civilian building damaged in the Blitz.
Although the interior was destroyed, the facade and parts of the foyer and vestibule still exsist.
The site has been awarded listed status by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport after a campaign by the National Civilian WWII Memorial Trust.

If it is a listed building, then surly to put that sign,or any sign on it, is illegal
-
Ron Submitted 24 days ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
I don’t know if it is right or not, I heard the film on at the time it was bombed was Charlie Chaplin in "The Great Dictator"which was used as a propaganda film about Hitler
-
MikeCovell Submitted 24 days ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
The listed status is to stop anyone pulling what is left of the building down, sadly, it doesn’t stop people sticking boards up in front of it.
There are a few cinemas which are said to have shown the Chaplin film during the blitz, only for them to have taken a direct hit. Perhaps this was an urban legend.
-
barrow Submitted 23 days ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
But surly anything attached to a listed building must have planning permission.I am sure if large adverts were put on the Tower of London, another listed building, that would be illegal
-
MikeCovell Submitted 23 days ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
It appears that the large black board is there to protect the building, local council is obviously getting a sum of money for the marketing board attached to the black board. Shame really, could do with a little TLC.
-

Might be nice if the front could be taken down brick by brick and re-erected in the museum area with a Hull at War theam,or showing old films in a recreated old time cimema or even near the Deep where many visitors on coach trips will see it and can see in a small old time cinema behind,Hull at War,or Hull’s Fishing heritage,or Hull, then and now,to raise perception of Hull.Or just leave it behind an advert on a main road with weeds growing out of it.

Barrow; The old White Lion pub, which stood under what is now St Stephens was dismantled brick by brick and rebuilt in a Hull museum, only to get bombed during WWII! How sad that must have been! It would be a good idea though.
Bob; Ronaldo and Cole need some entertainment when they are not playing!!
-
BobCarter Submitted 22 days ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
MikeCovell – That’s a bizarre story about the old White Lion pub!
-
MikeCovell Submitted 22 days ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Bob, That was when Tom Shepard was in charge of Hull’s Museums. There is a book available about him at library, and I remember some time ago, the Streetlife museum had his desk on display in the large glass window at the front.
