Bingo redundancies

Don’t know how many of you (or your wives) play the game but Hull has a huge influence on the game. ECM systems in burstwick provide the technology for practically every bingo club in the UK. Most of the installation/service companies for the industry are based in Hull.
Actually, not any more. Coincheck electronics of Beverley have gone out of business this week, becoming the 2nd of the 3 biggest companies of its kind to wind up within the last 6 months. IMS Uk being the other in January 08. The reason for this is mainly related to the smoking ban and the change in licencing regulations on gaming machines. Both Mecca and Gala have stopped spending the pennies.
The ripple affects hull badly with already dozens of jobs lost due to this. There are still 2 big firms in the area flying the flag but one wonders how long they will last!

Maybe a licence for a new ‘mini’ casino in Hull would help.

Casinos can have bingo departments as well as the slot machines, could not this help to keep the electronics side of things going?

ECM electronics are already a big player in the casino sector.
To be honest, casino and bingo club punters, in this country at least, are worlds apart. These companies would do work in bingo clubs, major refurbishments and upgrades to maybe 1000 or so "position". ie a huge job. Replicate that to a couple of clubs per week, happening every week of the year and it adds up to a lot of work. The fact is that Mecca and Gala (along with smaller but still sizeable competitors) are literally zipping their pockets shut, not partially but wholly. Ie zip, nothing, nowt. The game is getting more electronic with the advent of all singing and dancing handheld "tickets". Cue the dole queue for the makers of the bingo ticket.
Generally, its "progress" that the industry has become a victim of and is a fact of life. I just wanted to mention it on here as it is of local interest and maybe some locals aren’t aware of the part that Hull plays/played in the industry.

I don’t suppose online gambling helps matters, I know that is becoming very popular.

Online bingo has been hitting the sector for years, more so now as more sites appear. The smoking ban probably being the main contributer to the online versions numbers.
Lets face it, as things get digitised, the physical world loses out…its the progress thing again.
Which begs the question…(actually, i’ll start a thread with that)

The smoking ban has badly affected pubs and bingo halls. The Goverment are determined to stop people enjoying themselves.Once the price of cheap drink in the Supermarkets goes up,our misery will be complete.

I use to go to bingo, but when the smoking ban came in, I stopped, but my daughter talked me into going, so I gave it a go, must admit I didnt like having to go outside for a smoke specially with no shelter, it was freezing, there were more people outside smoking then people playing the board games, so I wont be going again, I like a smoke when playing bingo, specially if you are close to winning, it calms the nerves lol
