Tesco Rip Off?

Hamandsick

I have a big problem with Tesco, and it’s a bit long-winded, but so is the government.

When the local opened on Spring Bank, I marvelled at the range of pre-packaged goods and processed foods I had no intention of buying; I only ever went in for a muffin and a tin of evap.

Anyhoo, the big Tesco opened, and when I went in to buy a couple of muffins, and a few tins of evap, I noted they were a few pence cheaper than the local. Naturally, I was outraged, and stormed home to ring Consumer Direct immediately.

... {allow for the passing of time and so let the incident pass from your mind and so too the outrage} ...

About a week later Consumer Direct rang me and asked what my problem was. I replied "I haven’t got a problem pal, and if you’re going to take that tone with me…"

"No, you rang Consumer Direct regarding a concern over Tesco."

"Oh, right. Yes. How come Tesco Local are selling products 5-20% dearer than the Tesco Express?"

"Please excuse me a minute, I need to consult a colleague…..... Because they can. And if you have any other problems please do not…"

"Excuse me. Surely this is a tax on the poor, and the infirm, who cannot drive to the paradise of cheapness in their 4×4, and so have to pay higher prices in their local store."

"Well, you don’t have to shop there."

"Ey! Is there anyone there with some knowledge on extortion?"

"If there was, they would say the same as me sir, now, Tesco can charge what they like, where they like, and so…"

"Oh, I see, so let’s put it another way. Let’s say I have a business making widgets, and I consider selling those widgets in my shop, and I really dislike people from Beverley, and so decide to charge them 20% more than anybody else; are you telling me this is a legitimate and unprejudiced pricing policy?"

"Well, if it’s your business, who are we to tell you what to sell your widgets for."

"Eugh, thank you for your time. Goodbye."

And lo, it came to pass my concern for the common consumer concluded, or so I thought. This week, as I ambled down Newland Avenue, I thought I would buy a couple of muffins and some evap from the Tesco situated thereupon. To my absolute shock and horror, I found they were charging their goods even cheaper than both Tesco Express and my Tesco Local!

I just wondered whether the forum were aware of this and do they consider it fair on the consumer if Tesco is supposed to be one organisation. I can accept regional pricing differences, but not in the same town, surely.

Lazarus I think it is utterly digusting that you should query the integrity of these large well meaning, almost non-profit making, organisations who only do their best to serve the local community

Speaking as someone who worked in the food retail industry for over 25 years i would say you don’t know the half of what goes on within their organisations and their dealings with so called ‘competitors’. If you did know you would be ringing more people then consumer direct !!

  4. chickenbhuna Submitted 5 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

No it’s not fair and yes I have noticed. I can’t see any reason for regional price differences either, apart from London. Their overheads in a shop on Newland can’t be any different from their 24/7 store in St Stephens, if anything they would surely be cheaper. It’s a penalty on locals, surely? Most of the shops up Newland are hostile to Tescos anyway, so out of loyalty to them I avoid the big T.

OOOO the Suspense, i see "Lazarus’s" point here we all pay too much more so now than ever with the pathetic tax’s…like ive just been to Sainsbury’s AKA Jacksons on princess av & went to buy some guiness, BUT before i did i went online to the sainsbury’s website for the price ( http://www.sainsburys.com/groceries/index.jsp?bmUID=1213300004335 ) the price for the guiness DRAUGHT in there stores is Guinness Draught 4×440ml (4.1% Abv)Buy 2 for £7.00…So i went to the store on princes ave where two weeks before they had the same deal on to be anoyed that they wasnt doing the deal when online they are claiming that all stores are selling them in the offer..?? i asked a worker in the store whats what & he spoke to the manager who informed me that they cant afford to sell at that price anymore..?? WHAT….

Alhough they are not on their own on my particular issue, they continue to deny they are involved in sharp practices. I get really fired up when they have items on offer, BOGOF, buy three pay for two etc. and sneakily amongst the items on offer are the same products but in sizes/weights/capacities that do not qualify for discount, so when you get to the checkout you end up paying for each of the items at full price. The number of times I have complained to the duty managers about this but to no avail. How many of us actually check the receipts. you need to if you don’t

Far be it for me to say a company should not be seeking to profit from production and supply; just as long as things are fair and equal, I won’t have an issue with any organisation.

But there is a more concerning aspect, and if there are any accountants among us, I would be very grateful if you could clear this up for me. Due to the differentials in prices across stores could it be argued Tesco is applying more VAT than is necessary in some circumstances? [how do we know what the recommended retail price is?]

If there is a varying pricing policy from store to store, this leads me to consider Tesco Local is being run as a franchise rather than a centralised operation.

I don’t think there’s such a thing as RRP any more. Tesco, and everybody else, can charge what they like. They could argue, I suppose, that they can charge less in the bigger stores because of economies of scale. No, I don’t believe it either, but there’s nowt we can do about it.

It’s not just Tesco’s who have price differences between stoors. I normally shop at Netto’s Beverly, the other day I needed some bread for dinner while at work so I went to Netto’s Nr Greatfields only to find that it was 13p a loaf cheeper, when I commented about this their reply was we price up the goods acording to the area the shop is in and around here they will not pay as much as people will in other areas

I wouldn’t suggest Tesco to be diddling their taxes to the HM. But if you consider the VAT on a cheap item on Newland Ave and a more expensive item on Spring Bank; who do you think is picking that tab up?

That’s a very naive understanding towards a meritocritous system, and an equally naive understanding towards our imperial democratic capitalist system, and indeed, you are solely considering the matter through materialist eyes.

Russian politburo members were appointed through long-standing service to their country and party; is such reward to be denigrated by capitalists? When did MPs last decide to take a pay-cut? £500,000 channelled through MEP’s firm; in a communist society you would not get a second-chance.

  40. Willow Submitted 5 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

I don’t think it’s me that is being naive Laz, I think you are . You seem to be looking at the communist system through rose coloured glasses. The politburo members simply have the "old school tie". They fit into the comfortable system created by the other politburo members. They are seen as the sort that will go along with things and not rock the boat. Do we see some sort of similarity here? What about repression and human rights?

  42. Lazarus Submitted 5 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Let’s not drag the quid pro quo of human rights, repression and genocide into this; it becomes quite tiresome. You really have very little understanding of what communism is, and have come to that ‘little’ understanding through supposition, rhetoric and media propaganda. And as they say, a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing. It’s much better if you stick to capitalism, because you really need to invest very little thought in how to rip people off, in fact, no thought at all.

  75. Lazarus Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

For those of you who have been waiting with as much anticipation as myself, here is Tesco’s response. It might be useful to read my email and decide whether they have resolved my concern:

I wonder if you could assist me in understanding your pricing policy between your Express & Local stores. Although I do not use your store like most people rely on water, I do find a number of articles indispensible, such as muffins and evaporated milk.

When your Local store opened at the bottom of the street I marvelled at the price of evaporated milk, which was 57p. Although the Iceland next door priced evaporated milk (EM) at 2 for £1.00. So, I usually dipped between the two stores to buy my EM. However, when I finally went into your Express store I found EM to be 55p. Equally I noted the price differential between your local store and Express for blueberry muffins to be 2p (57p & 55p respectively). Now, I considered the differential between the two to be based on price elasticity; a bigger store will naturally be able to provide some savings in price due to aggregation. The problem became when the price of EM in your local store rose to 64p and Express to 58p (a differential of 6p). I put this down to the constant rise in fuel and accepted the rise grudgingly. However, when I visited your local store on Newland Avenue the price of EM was 55p and I was naturally quite incensed. Therefore could you explain these pricing anomalies, and answer whether your local stores are being operated as franchise outlets? I ask this because when Iceland’s offer of 2 for 1 ended, the Local next door increased the price to 72p, and Newland Avenue & Express to 62p.

Another reason for my concern for the consumer is due to weekly rising prices; such as the curious rise of milk from 40p to 50p, and then a week later a reduction to 42p! Can you explain whether you are in control of pricing in these local stores or the manager? As another example, a branded bottle of Latte began at the price of 48p in the local store, and then suddenly rose to 86p. When visiting the Express store the price was 44p.

I am sure you will share my concern over this curious pricing policy, and would allay such concern if you could assist in resolving this matter. I cannot, however, find any fault in your patisserie, as you produce some excellent baked products that are worth every increase you so imagine.

I’m sorry that you’re unhappy with the price we charge for our products. But perhaps it’s misleading if you just look at the price of a few items. Please let me explain why.

At Tesco we try to be as competitive as we can with our prices, but we never promised that we would undercut all the prices charged by other retailers. Despite the fact that, on occasions, individual products may cost slightly more, our prices are generally considered to be amongst the lowest in the country.

Our Clubcard loyalty scheme is the best there is. Through Clubcard we offer our customers discount on their shopping, partnership promotions and, of course, our excellent Clubcard Deals.

In our stores we offer a wide choice of low priced quality goods and loads of special offers. And we give our customers a pleasant, convenient shopping environment and highly trained and friendly staff combined with a first class service. So we genuinely feel that the overall service we offer our customers is second to none.

I would like to assure you that the majority of prices charged in our Express stores are the same as those in all Tesco Stores. There are higher costs involved in operating our Express stores, compared to the larger supermarkets.

Although we do absorb many of the costs involved, in order to give our customers the high standard of service they expect, it is sometimes necessary to charge a little more on a limited range of products. These pricing differences are kept to an absolute minimum.

We are confident that for quality of products, service and fuel, we continue to offer the best value possible in comparison to other convenience stores.

Now we see how they manipulate the poor, the weak and the vulnerable, by ignoring their own agenda of providing low, low, prices week in week out! Or is that Sainsbury? Anyway, let this be a statement, a statement of fact, that Tesco only cares about worming that few extra pence from your pocket while you are not looking, while you are indeed only considering poor blind Timmy’s next Muller Corner yoghurt, or simple little Sarah who only speaks a simple thank you when you reach down to gift her that Solero. —- Original Message —-

    Hello,

Thank you for your kind response, but I must extend my concern for clarity’s sake. As you state "I would like to assure you that the majority of prices charged in our Express stores are the same as those in all Tesco Stores. There are higher costs involved in operating our Express stores, compared to the larger supermarkets.

Although we do absorb many of the costs involved, in order to give our customers the high standard of service they expect, it is sometimes necessary to charge a little more on a limited range of products. These pricing differences are kept to an absolute minimum."

Therefore, and to avoid any ambiguity, for Tesco to provide low, low prices at your larger stores, you consider it ethical to charge increased prices. This would indicate Tesco is operating a prejudicial pricing policy that rewards people able to visit the larger store and penalises those who cannot; such as the disabled, people without transport, the elderly, etc. Don’t you think you should explain this in your local stores?

  90. laggyband Submitted 4 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Now that some members of the supermarkets cartel have taken over, or closed, many of the local and corner shops, they can all now say to their loyal customer base, ‘Pay what we say, or do without’.

I’m just working through the metrics, but when I’ve balanced it I would be more than happy to send you a copy. It c/should be ready on Monday.

If people do not like Tescos, shop elsewhere.

    Vote with your feet.

  97. theagitator Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

If people voted with their feet & avoided Tescos’, at least half of our correspondants would have nothing to whinge about.

  98. Willow Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Lazarus. Please bear in mind that I am thick.

" just remove the angle brackets " What do’es that mean?

  99. Willow Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Agitator, If the correspondants on here had nothing to winge about you’d have nothing to do in your old age. Exept clean your gun and pretend being 007. LOL

<...> scrap those 2 symbols. It’s just there to stop crawlers picking my email out.

I suppose whinging goes from 90% of topics on this website. I’m not really complaining about Tesco’s as an organisation, just a certain aspect of it. I believe The Guardian has revealed Tesco to be hiding their profits abroad, and so avoid tax. Is this ok?

  101. Willow Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Tax avoidance is legal. Lets be honest Laz,I am sure that you, me and 99.9% of the tax paying population would avoid it if we could. Any suggestions?

  102. Willow Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

<..> No Laz I give in. What am I looking for. Bear in mind I am not from a computer age generation.

  103. Lazarus Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

On my profile, under the Name section, and below Lazarus, you will see my email enclosed in those symbols.

Work abroad and have no more than 90 days per financial year in the UK. You are then not liable to pay tax on your foreign earnings. Simple as that. In fact quite a large number of UK citizens now do this & are up to 40% better off.And as a bonus it’s all legal.

  105. Willow Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Yes, Thankfully I see the problem. Laz click onto my profile ( me Willow) and see if you can see my email address. I think our email addresses are hidden.

  106. Colombo Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

I think only you can see your e-mail under your profile.

Try exchanging messages/addresses through the moderator, if they allow it.

  107. Lazarus Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Yes, it’s annoying you can’t turn your email visibility on or off. But if you send me an email at some point, I’ll send you this application in a few days. Working out the timings is quite a pain at the moment.

Agitator. Set yourself up as a limited company. Pay yourself about £100 per week ( which is about what you need to qualifie for an old age pension )and thats about it.

You can even claim Housing Benefit & Income Support if your income falls below a certain amount; I think its 5k at the minute. Don’t forget to pay your Class 2s.

  110. Willow Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Cheers Laz but I don’t think even I would get away with that.

  111. Lazarus Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

No, it’s true. I went through this at the tax office a couple of years ago. You can also claim Incapacity & Disability, just as long as you’re paying your class 2s.

  112. Colombo Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

I saw on the news today, some fellows have been claiming incapacity benefits whilst refereeing football matches and taking part in half marathons. Yet, some apparently deserving cases have great difficulty in getting any benefit.

  113. Willow Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

    Laz what are class 2s
