My mate has just signed up for a BT line and all its benefits and lives in Hull after hearing some other people doing the same. He has received confirmation.
If all goes well with his application and installation I’ll be following suit.
Is this the end Of KC and Karoo’s monopoly? Let’s hope so.

Karoo didn’t have a monopoly.

Can’t say I’ve heard of this developement, but if it is an erosion of the KC customer base then we better be prepared for the subsequent job losses as KC tries to cut costs.

How does one go about it?

Anng, apparently you just go onto the BT website and apply from there. There is also a link if you want to change to them from a different supplier.
This is my mates first line, he hasn’t had a Kingston one just relying on mobiles, so wouldn’t expect much difference for swapping providers.
He has had another email today saying they are installing the line on the 20th.

Talk about "out of the frying pan into the fire" I didn’t realise people would be so thick as to go to BT, don’t you keep up with the latest news, about the slowness of BT run lines.

You might be ok with the phone, BT do some nice deals on national calls & to relatives. But be wary about broadband. They operate a download limit per month, KC doesn’t.

Sounds like a case of ‘the grass is greener’ to me.

I have been asked to sign online petitions and other stuff relating to KC/Karoo, mostly protesting. But I have to say that, unless I am extremely lucky, I cannot say I have suffered too much with Karoo.
Yes the servers have gone down a couple of times and I have wondered why no back up servers do not seem to be available. My e-mail has failed a couple of times as well. I do not run a business online, which has caused anger amongst some subscribers, I am only a home user.
I cannot understand why it took 6 days to change me from dial up to broadband, but that was a minor inconvenience, so overall you could say I am satisfied with Karoo’s service. I do look on chat forums and it seems other ISP’s have their own problems not dissimilar to Karoo, technology is marvellous, but not infallible.

The latest broadband speed test results from leading broadband comparison site BroadbandChoices.co.uk reveal that Kingston Communications-owned ISPs Karoo and Eclipse Internet scooped two of the three top spots in the 8Mbps speed category.
Karoo, Kingston Communications’ East Yorkshire-based ISP, was ranked the fastest service in BroadbandChocies.co.uk’s ‘Cruiser Weight’ 8Mbps category – the UK’s most popular category – with its customers enjoying an average of 48.2 per cent of their advertised speed. Kingston’s national ISP Eclipse Internet took third place in the speed league table, with its customers achieving an average of 40.9 per cent of the maximum 8Mbps.

Cheers Ed, I did get into a bit of heated argument with someone because I more or less stated what I have written above, and that I was satisfied with Karoo overall, not what the person wanted to hear.

I paid £26 a quarter for BT line rental and £17 a month for broadband (cheapest package) had no probs with speed, connection or service. Am moving to Hull next month so will read with interest if your friend gets connected via BT.
Have heard mixed reviews on karoo and some of the tariffs not the best, but then that depends on personal use for phone and downloads etc.
Went with carphone warehouse for a year and never never again, sooo many people had problems and never got them resolved so if they try and muscle in on Hull I would say bootthem out!!
Can see your point of view over the possible job losses..hmmm, lot to consider!

Rather funny I thought.

"Sorry, this page is currently unavailable." – i also had look a @ BT, like T-Man. the karoo page is all-dancing and works. i’ve always found their technical assistance nothing other than very helpful and have never been unable to access t’internet. i’m on karoo pro [£1 per day] with unlimited overnight usage and 75 gb monthly download. £1 a day!. fantastic!!.

On ths site you’ll get the gripers who begrudge having to part with money, and think because they see other ISP’s advertised at less, its better, but what they don’t see is the small print on limits and limitations, the cheapers it is, the more limits apply.
All the exaggerations about faults with Karoo, pale into insignificance as to what happens else where.
Remember more service help centres are foreign staffed and based, unlike Karoo which is here in the city and they provide a magnificent service.

people in this area have a pathological need to distance themselves from anything that might suggest to "out-of-towners" that they are in fact, local. the ceaseless knocking of karoo is just a symptom of this: as is the ridiculous outlying village snobbery.

Well I’m happy with Karoo, Cheap local calls and my broadband is working well.

"lazarus kc do have a download limit just read the fair usage policy. and then look at the new price bands"
The download limit is only during peak times which makes sense as it prevents the system running slower. Once out of peak times you can download to your hearts content.
