Talking at work today about the programme showing tonight with Fergie helping a family from Preston Road get thin by eating healthy. A colleague asked how do they get the statistics to say Hull is the fat capital.

Is it from doctors and hospitals, is it from walking down the street and doing a head count on anyone over a certain size! Do they get pepole to write in and say I’m a fatistic put me down? because nobody asked me. JulesJules

Obese blamed for the world’s ills

Obese people are contributing to the world food crisis and climate change, experts say.

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine calculated the obese consume 18% more calories than average.

They are also responsible for using more fuel, which has an environmental impact and drives up food prices as transport and agriculture both use oil.

The result is that the poor struggle to afford food and greenhouse gas emissions rise, the Lancet reported.

It comes as the World Health Organization predicts the obese population will double by 2015 to 700m.

In the UK, nearly a quarter of adults are classed obese, twice as many as there were in the 1980s.

The team found that obese people require 1,680 daily calories to sustain normal energy and another 1,280 to maintain daily activities – a fifth more than normal.

The higher consumption of food has a two-fold effect, researchers said.

First of all the increasing demand for food, drives up production.

This means that agricultural processes are using more oil to meet demand, which contributes to the rising cost of fuel.

The cost of fuel is then passed on in the cost of food, making it more difficult for poorer areas to afford it.

    Prices

What is more, the researchers said obese people are likely to rely on transport more and put more strain on that transport because of their mass, which again drives up prices and usage.

But the researchers said there was a solution.

Phil Edwards, who co-authored the article, said: "Urban transport policies that promote walking and cycling would reduce food prices by reducing the global demand for oil and promotion of a normal weight.

And they added: "Decreased car use would reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"Transport and food policy and the importance of sustainable transport must not be overlooked."

But Dr David Haslam, of the National Obesity Forum, said it was "stretching it a bit" to blame the obese in the way.

"Really, it is discriminatory towards obese people. They are an easy target at the moment, but I think the causes of climate change and rising food prices is much more complex."

Perhaps they got the statistics from the local store sales JJ, go into most of the shops in town and Kingswood and you will find that all the stock in the sales are a size 8,10 or 12 because all the ‘fat’ sizes have been sold.

My grandson, who is 11,is over weight and he knows it he gets very upset to the point of wanting to kill himself because of the way his so called diet experts keep on at him. He loves sport, american football, soccer and rugby especially rugby but gets bullied when he joins in,I have told him that not all rugby players have to be greyhounds there has to be some wieght for the scrums and tackles. In my family we have all been over weight at some point in our lives, and this goes back four generations,so the family genes play a big part and the only time they lost any weight was when they were dying of cancer.. I for one am sick of hearing about our over weight kids, they should be more worried about how much depression they are causing in our children. Sorry for the rant!!!

A friend pointed out to me whilst we were shivering and smoking that the smoking ban has helped fat people – they now have someone in society to look down on! smokers are the new outcasts.

"The seperate thread has now been deleted – apologies to Ed-gee who will need to re-write their post." – it’s an absolute scandal!

"An obesity league table published in March 2004 found that Hull was the fattest area in Britain. The tables were compiled by data analysts Experian and based on type 2 diabetes hospital admission records.

Those most likely to be overweight were white, working-class families who have poor education and do little exercise, the study found. The majority of the worst 10 areas were in the north of England and Wales, while the majority of the healthiest places were in the south-east."

ChiefDragon my heart goes out to your grandson people can be so cruel. I have been a yoyo dieter all my life because of a stupid comment made to me when I was 11. I hope your grandson isnt going to end up the same. I have just been reunited with a brother age 70 and a sister age 72 that I didnt know existed they too are overweight so it can run in families. Who cares about statistics anyway they will never be exact.

Thanks for explaining a thread to me JohnnyNoah:} Did you know that curry originated from the British. Or so I was told by my chef friend.

  20. MarioTheGibbon Submitted 6 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

probably the word "curry" did, as a corruption of the indian word for stew, or summat lke that brought back by the colonialists. but i’d have thought the tremendous mounds of steaming spicy wonderment is one of india’s great contributions to world cuisine.

Tried to post this yesterday but none of my posts were accepted because of a fault – so they said!

Hull is a regional diabetic centre so naturally there will be registered diabetics coming here from all over. They aren’t all residents.
