Most of us will have heard of the alleged hauntings at places such as Ye Olde White Hart and Black Boy but have any of you ever had a paranormal experience?

I’ve had a couple of odd experiences.
I remember one in particular. I’d been in the kitchen making a sandwich and a cup of coffee. I made the sandwich, and then took two cups of coffee (one for me, and one for my wife) into the living room. When I returned to the kitchen, I found that a childs hairband had been placed on the top of the sandwich! Our kids were in bed, so it couldn’t have been them playing a trick, both of our cats were in the living room, so it wasn’t anything to do with them, and the hairband could not have fallen from anywhere.
The other experience also concerns the kitchen in the same house. My wife and I were sat in the living room late at night, both of our cats and our dog were asleep in the living room, when we heard an odd sort of ‘growl’ from the kitchen. Quite loud as well. Neither the cats nor the dog reacted, which was itself quite strange. And upon investigation, we couldn’t find anything that had fallen and made a noise, so, we just don’t know.

About 3 weeks after my Gran died I was on top deck of a bus going down Craven Street. The bus stopped to pick up passengers and my Gran was their. She waved but did not get on the bus. It is as clear to me now as it was 47 years ago and with what happened when my dad died it makes me totally sure of life after death. I was at the foot of the hospital bed (about 3 feet away from my fathers feet), my mother on his left side and my elder brother and wife on his right side. But the instant he died something shot right through me and made me stand up and say out loud " God be with you father". My mum and brother looked at me and said NO. The nurse came and said he has died. I know that feeling because it never goes away and it will last until the end of my days. THERE IS LIFE AFTER DEATH, I am absolutely positive. If you had experienced what I had, then you would have no doubts either. It is NOT belief. You HAVE to go through it to be able to understand it

Apart from funny atmospheres in places (Pearson Park Police box for one), I can’t say I have every really – well not for certain – experienced anything directly. There was one occasion when I am sure I heard my late cousin say "Don’t worry; everything will be alright," when I was in court a few years ago accused of something I had not done, but I cannot be certain that it was not a state of mind thing.
However, other people in my family have experienced things more directly….
What is known of Northumberland Court – the former Almshouses, and now sheltered accommodation?
I have heard numerous stories from my wife, whose grandfather was resident there for some years. Apparently he would find things in his bed under the sheets – substantial things, like Altar Crucifixes and pewter jugs and bowls – in his room, and staff would take them back and lock them in a safe, but the things would find their way back quicker than it would have been possible for someone to break into the safe, steal them, and bring them back, and trust me, Ken just wasn’t fast enough himself! Apparently they had the room exorcised and it stopped.
I am interested to hear these stories, and more…
Also does anyone know anything about the Avenues, Chanterlands and particularly Perth Street areas?

I am collecting stories of Hull and it’s ghost stories and currently have over 250 locations, and about 400 stories, many of which back up claims made by others.
These range from pubs, clubs, hotels, museums, shops, shopping centres, learning centres, theatres, cafes, places of religion, streets, and peoples homes.
My intrest in the paranormal began when I was 8 and I saw a strange light in the sky. I pushed my dad for questions and he handed me a massive book of the unexplained. I have thousands of books, magazines, articles, video’s, dvds, and rare collectors items.
In 2007 I began writing a weekly paranormal Hull page on Hull Paranormal’s website, but this stopped when the group stopped.
With the creation of Yorkshire Paranormal Investigations I was invited along as the team’s historian, and I work on the historical side of all the locations.
I was recently a guest on Humberside Paranormal Investigations Weekly Radio Show, were my knowledge was enough to get me a monthly guest slot with the guys.
I have had dealings with, Hull Paranormal Investigations, Yorkshire Paranormal Investigations, Humberside Paranormal Investigations, PSI Hull, Hull Paranormal Ghost Club, Hull Paranormal Ghost Society,
All of which are very nice people and fantastic groups. I would love to see groups like this work together against the ever increasing number who only seem to be in it for the money!
And yes, I have had quite a lot paranormal experiences, most of which are shared with secondary witnesses.

Have I ever had paranormal experiences? I have them at least once a month!
I’m a member of the group Mike mentioned above ‘Yorkshire Paranormal Investigations’ Formally known as ‘Hull Paranormal Investigations’ I’ve been a member for nearly 3 years, Mike joined us when we reformed the group as YPI.
We’ve done paranormal investigations at places such as New Theatre, Blaydes House, Oriel Chambers, Priory Inn, Ye Olde White Heart, RAF Holmpton Underground Bunker, Knottingly Town Hall, The Punch Hotel, The Yorkshireman, Crossley Sanitorium and many many more.
I say we experience paranormal activity but our aim is to see whether it is paranormal or just something environmental or natural. Most noises we hear or objects that fall have perfectly rational explanations. We’ve had some unexplainable things actually caught on camera. I still don’t even know if I’m a firm believer. We crave some actual solid proof. But it is such a fun hobby and I really enjoy doing it. and some of the stories people tell us seem unreal! Ooooooo spooky!

There is plenty of activity at the site of Kingston General hospital, now Endeavour High.
A figure was regularly seen to cross the the kitchen and we believe it was the Matron of either the hospital or the workhouse. We have also had reports of ghostly figures seen in corridors and the drama hall.
They were so frightening to the staff that the school was blessed 18mths ago.
I still believe to this day that my mother visited me one night as I lay in bed,I felt her hand on top of my head which was the way she always touched me whenever we said ‘cheerio’and I was not there when she died,so I believe she came to say her last farewell.
I attend the spiritulist church in Sculcoates Lane and always leave with a feeling of wellbeing. Yes!I believe there is life after death.I would love to do a haunted walk around Hull but I’m not sure how to go about it.

Shortly after my Father -in-law died,My daughter was staying at her Grandma,s.She was woken in the night by a strange green aura coming from the kitchen. Also, when she was three, she was in the living room of their pub which is 16th century and used to be a school. She said she could hear children playing and laughing.I’ve often wondered if she is psychic. As a baby, one of her first words were "ee bah gum" which my late Grandfather used to say(West Yorkshireman!)

Keith Daddy runs a ghost walk around the old town called "Scares and Scandals" I have his details so if you contact me, I can put you in touch.
One plan I had whilst writing Haunted Hull was to create a seperate "Tour Guide" to enable visitors to walk the entire town centre and take in over 100+ locations.
There were also other plans involving a walk that fell through due to illness, but will hopefully see the light of day soon.
Just today I got two new fantastic case studies involving "Haunted Locations" in Hull.

I’ve had various experiences but I can’t say for a fact that they were paranormal.
The latest happened several weeks ago. As I was coming down the stairs (hope I make this clear!) as my head was level to the landing a cat called right down my ear!
We have two cats and one of them was upstairs but he was fast asleep in my bedroom, I know that because after I’d shot down the stairs I sent my husband to check where he was.
Also, those of you with cats will, you get to know your own cats voice, this wasn’t one of our living ones. Got to admit I still edge up to the other side of staircase now.

A few years ago, I was living in a flat in a really old building on the south cliff of Scarborough. I have no idea what the place used to be before it was converted into flats, but felt as though something unpleasant went on in there a long time ago. The only other tennant in there was an old man who lived on the ground floor, who I hardly ever saw and never heard, and I lived on the top floor. Sometimes, when I was in the kitchen or living room, I would hear children playing and shouting, and could swear that it was coming from my bedroom, yet when I went to check, there would be no one there. Then, one night, after a heavy drinking session, I woke in the middle of the night to see a woman sat on the bed next to my then boyfriend, with her back to me, She had a short, wavy, slicked back hairstyle that seemed old fashioned, maybe from the twenties, and some sort of dark uniform, dress on. After a few seconds of staring at her, she began to slowly fade away. I’m still not sure if I really did see her, or if it was the effects of the alcohol I had drank.(I had never had hallucinations from drinking alcohol before I saw her, or since.) Anyhow after that I would never be alone in there, and moved out a couple of days later.

Back on topic, our house is Victorian. It has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. But the cat regularly seems disturbed and stares into corners of the room, when there is clearly nothing there…

I worked at Needlers and saw several things which got me intrested, It was in the early hours of the morning and the sun was coming up, which is always a welcome sight after a nightshift. I was helping a good friend move some toffee when we heard a loud bang. We were on a floor away from any other workers and all the doors were locked, so we assumed it was an intruder. As we stood silently we watched as a male, dressed in brown overalls moved from behind some pallets, we started shouting at him, but he payed no attention, instead, he "Floated" out from behind the pallets into the path we had just walked and it appears as if he had no legs!! We gave chase and followed him to a set of double doors, but as we got withing inches, he passed right through them. They were locked, and as we looked through the glass windows, he had vanished!
This was one of four personal experiences I had at the plant, which was a wonderful place to work. I have a collection of over 40 stories from that building alone!
It is not my only experiance, nor was it my first, but it stands out as being one of the most exciting!

Quote Red "But the cat regularly seems disturbed and stares into corners of the room, when there is clearly nothing there…"
The cats that we had when we lived in a large council flat also used to do the same thing Red. We also kept quite a few tanks of tropical fish at the time, and one of our nursery tanks was in the same corner that the cats used to stare at. We came into the living room one morning to find that a small shoal of baby mollies had died in the nursery tank. Coincidence? Possibly, but the heater and filter in the tank was working fine. It was always cold in that particular corner of the room.

The majority of orbs are dust or insects. However there are some that aren’t easily explained. I think the advent of digital cameras have increased the numbers of orbs caught on film. Not sure if there are any records of them on photos taken with ordinary cameras. That’s why the paranormal is a fascinating subject so many questions and a myriad of possibilities :)
-
Willow Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
The orbes I got on my photo’s looked like floating blobs of water. Best I can describe it. Not like insects or dust.

China Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Condensation can also cause ‘orbs’. The light from your camera can reflect off water droplets From what I’ve heard there are places you can send your photos off for examination.
-
Willow Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
These water droplets look like the size of a cucumber. How can they just float around ?
-
China Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
I’m not saying that your photos are light reflected but a lot of orbs are light reflecting off water droplets in the atmosphere. The size can be affected by the magnification used or just how close to the lens the water droplet was.
-

So what you are saying is they have nothing to do with the paranormal
No I’m not saying that at all! Orbs can be put down to natural causes but there are occassions when this isn’t the case, they are the ones that keep people interested in them :)
I believe in the paranormal but I like to try and be critical (in a good way) as I can. Once natural causes are ruled out of any phenomena then that’s when it gets really interesting :)

When I was 8 my favourite auntie died, and on the day of her funeral, after I went to bed, I saw her standing at the foot of my bed, smiling, but a bit shadowy. She said "Everything’s alright". Unfortunately I was so scared, I ran downstairs crying and made up a story about a bad dream, too terrified to tell anyone what I had just seen. I still don’t know whether it was a ghost or just a trick of the mind. It certainly looked very real though. I knew someone who worked in Carmelite House on Posterngate, a former nunnery turned into offices, and apparently quite a few of them swore they had seen figures of nuns walking the corridors.
-
China Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Sorry for the delay in replying to you Willow.
I’m not sure how common they are to be honest. Digital cameras do seem to ‘catch’ more of them. Having said that though we’ve only ever had one orb on a photo.
I also think that paranormal programmes such as Most Haunted etc have made people more aware of these light anomolies. Most of us would have just had a moan about them ruining our pictures :)
I do know that Liverpool Hope University did have a parapsychology department. Not sure if it still does though I’m afraid.
-
MikeCovell Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Whilst I agree that "Orbs" can be cause by natural phenomena, such as dust, insects, moisture etc there are still a small percentage that remain unexplainable. I present two shots to you, both taken in a late Victorian Property along High Street.
The first was taken in a room, where we recieved "Knocks/Taps" in relation to questions. There was a chair and we asked for whatever it was to sit in the chair. I asked if I could take a picture and recieved "Two Taps" for yes. There were 6 of us in the room to witness this.

Next up was taken in the same property, on the staircase looking down into the reception hall. Shuffling noises were coming from the doorway where the room with the chair was, I took and snap and got this.

I managed to catch these anomlies on two shots out of 50 that evening. The following night I caught a couple more in the building which was very active.
The camera’s specs can be found here, http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Samsung/samsung_s630.asp
The "Tapping" on the first photo, and the "Shuffling" on the second made the pics all the more intresting.

I had an odd experience in the Mission involving an ash tray.
My wife and I were sat in the raised section having a meal. As we ate, the ash tray in the middle of the table moved six or seven inches, and then stopped dead. My wife didn’t notice this, but I did, so I said to her "Did you see that?" As she looked, the ash tray moved again, but at an angle to its first journey. I picked the ash tray up, thinking that it might have been damp and with air trapped under it, but it was bone dry. So the ‘hovercraft’ effect was out as an explanation. The table was quite stable, it didn’t rock or anything, so it was nothing like that that could have caused it. Anyone have any ideas?
-

I love the Mission, how many Hull pubs can boast a stained glass window! It has a great atmosphere, and I got several great stories from the landlord and several other witnesses.
One could argue that "traffic vibrations" could have caused such an event, but you both would have felt that. It’s nice to see you checked for trapped air/moisture which can cause movement. Another intresting factor is that it changed direction! Usually is something is moving, it goes in one direction, unless a force pushes it in the other direction!
In my view, it could have been the little old lady, who has been seen sat praying!
I was editing the book this morning and there are so many weird and wonderful locations, each with their very own little tales.
Hull has such a long gruesome history!!
-
Chromosome23 Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
That was what really surprised me about it, the fact that it changed direction. It was as though it waited until I’d mentioned it to my wife before it moved for the second time. Certainly wasn’t traffic vibration, as you know, the traffic dowm Posterngate is light and fairly slow.
Can you tell us anything about the little old lady?

Well there are lots of ‘normal’ explanations for orbs. The paranormal explanation is that they are the start of spirit manifestation. I don’t know if you watch Most Haunted, but on previous series they caught light anomalies that were more strands than orbs. Although one them turned out to be a spider on a strand of web.
http://www.hauntedland.co.uk/a_orbs.php
That site seems to be good for an explanation. You could try doing a search for ‘paranormal light anomalies’. I’m not too sure what a search for ‘orbs’ might bring up!! :D

Supernatural explainations include, Spirit manifestation, Energy fields,
The difference is colour can be attributed to the type of spirit. We had several "Black Orbs" show up on film at our old house, and we have witnessed green and red, along with the usual white.
We had a property down Durham Street which was so active we called in the local church. The Rev. performed a blessing and for a couple of days all was well, but then got worse. Eventually we got a couple of "White Witches" down to help. They performed a wonderful candle ceremony, no black magic and voodoo! Things got better straight away. We managed to sell the house and move on!

Here is a great "ORB" story, Whilst researching my book, I visited and called almost every pub in Hull. On one occassion I had heard about a pub which was haunted but the owner did not want to go on record! I took his stories and prepared to present it as a "unnamed pub" but he told me that there was loads of activity. This was verified by several independant witnesses too!
He told me that if you stood in the bar and took a picture you could get "ORCS!" on camera! I enquired if there was a portal to "Middle Earth" but he did not get the joke!
I would love to reveal the location of this magnificent pub, but I fear it will remain a secret for some time!

Just a couple of questions…
1,Why do hauntings appear to happen at night and usually at the ‘foot of the bed’?
2,Can you get your house blessed by a CofE vicar or other denomination?
Incidently,i have had stuff happen to me in my house but will tell about them another time.

Hi Noah, 1, Hauntings and paranormal experiences can happen anytime of the day, I have personally experienced stuff, so as my wife, and I have a file full of Hull related daytime sightings. Ranging from children crying, to full torso apparitions!
2, Our Holy man was a Methodist Minister but all churches will come and bless your house. Just call/write/ or email them and they will help.
failing that, get in touch and I can help you!

Could be that during the day an apparition just looks like everyone else and nobody takes much notice! As for the foot of the bed bit well bed is where a lot of people are at night :)
From what I’ve read and heard quite a lot of nightworkers report strange events at work.
He told me that if you stood in the bar and took a picture you could get "ORCS!" on camera! I enquired if there was a portal to "Middle Earth" but he did not get the joke!
:D Was that before the Lord of the Rings film was made?

No, just after so I was really trying hard not to laugh!
During the night it is a natural part of the human body to become tired, and we begin to relax. Whilst in this state different parts of the brain begin to work and it apparently makes us more likely to see spirits!
Several Hull City Centre Shops have all reported activity during the day!

ghosts and ghouls-if they do exist they must be more lifelike than the locals-phone carrying shopping zombies-why do they never switch their silly phones off-fear thats why

why dont people open their eyes to the world around them instead of worrying about ghosts-if ghosts do exist so what?
-
China Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
If ghosts do exist then they are part of the world around us and as such are, in theory, as worthy of thought as anything else.

The paranormal doesnt exist the empirical evidence is tenuous.
-
MikeCovell Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
And just what evidence do you have that it doesn’t?
-
China Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Well based on that old statement that you can’t prove a negative, the possibility remains that life after death/supernatural/ghosts do exist. It would be a very closed mind indeed not to admit that possibility.
-

well if ghosts exist so what? why the big fuss?
-
China Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
:D
Well I’m sure you know the answer to that really. It’s one of lifes great mysteries, something that does, if true, affect everyone eventually.
It’s a bit like saying ‘so what if life does or has existed on another planet’.
People need more than the everyday grind in their lives. Curiosity is a great driving force.

by being interested in ghosts-my cousin died a few weeks ago i havent seen him? why?
-
China Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
First of all condolences on your bereavement.
There are as many theories as to ‘apparitions’ as there are different types of paranormal activities.
Some say that whilst we all have psychic ability only some use it. Others that only spirits who have unfinished business will appear. Also that some spirits need a time of adjustment. Yet again one theory is that a spirit will only appear to those who need or could handle such an encounter.
Obviously any possible explanation is only theoretical as there is no empirical evidence as yet/

Barry, I am in the same boat, I lost my cousin many years ago and he was like a big brother, he was killed in a tragic accident on Castle Street, and I would give the world for 5 more minutes. I saw my grandfather just after my son was born, but didn’t tell the wife in case she became afraid. Weeks later she saw him!
-
barrycoleridge Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
where did you see him?
-

My grandfather appeared at my old house. We had brought our son home from the baby unit were he was kept because he was early. My wife and I were sat on the sofa watching tv, my son in my arms. As my wife and son were alseep, I switched the tv off, and as I did I felt something push down on the back of the sofa. It was impossible for me to turn around, so I looked in the tv and saw my grandfather stood behind me, looking down at my son smiling.
Weeks later my wife came running thought the house convinced she had seen in intruder in the living room, I was in the bathroom and ran into the living room, checking doors and windows, cupboards and even under the bed, for an intruder. When she described him, I knew it was my grandfather. I showed her some pictures my parents had and she picked him out.
We tried to rationalise it, tiredness, light relfection on the tv screen, etc but could not explain it.
I never had the chance to say good bye to my grandfather when he passed away, in fact it upset me so much I couldn’t even talk about it. Now I know he is in a better place, and still able to watch over us.

Sceptics are crucial in the paranormal field! Without them it would be far too easy to get carried away and misinterpret events. If any provable evidence is to be found then all sides of the belief structure need to be involved and convinced.
Some of the most die hard sceptics I know go on investigations. :)

Hi China, thats right, it’s better to try and debunk it, than to look like a total plank when someone else debunks it later.
The most rational approach is the best, although I admit, I do get carried away in the moment. Looking for "Natural" explainations can take minutes, but prove fruitful. I invested in a "Stud Detector" this allows me to trace cables or water pipes that may cause either high EMF Readings or tapping behind the wall.
I have seen a few places with high EMF, and eyewitness accounts saying "They are being watched" yet with the stud detector, I can evaluate were the wires are, how much EMF the wires are responsible for.
Electromagnetic frequencies can give the feeling of being watched, and being disoriented.

It seems to me that there are two distinct forms of manifestations. On the one hand people see entities which appear to interact on some level with the local environment, and on the other, entities which appear to conform to the ‘stone tape’ theory are witnessed. Does anyone think that the two forms are related, or are they a completely seperate phenomenon?
-
China Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
From what little I know I’d say that the stone tape type is merely a kind of recording of a past energy. The old tv play The Stone Tape puts forward the idea that a recent event/haunting can overlay a previous. I suppose that would explain why people don’t report ghosts of dinosaurs :D
-
China Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Sorry, I meant to add that the former seems to be an energy that still exists in this existance so yes, I’d say they are different.

Perhaps they do. The Loch Ness Monster for example?

I have visited a couple of locations along the High Street and Lowgate area were activity is none exsistant, until the Bell’s toll on the hour. During the tolling I have encountered bout’s of activity that just could not be explained. Historical analysis showed that some of the activity had happened in the past that accounts for some of the activity.
I was discussing the "stone tape theory" on Humberside Paranormal Radio recently with Grant and Graham. The discussion was looking into cemetery hauntings, and I put forward the theory has having something to do with the kinds of activity reported there. This is possibly the reason why so many castles in the UK report sightings and activity.
I did a great deal of research into the theory some years ago and discovered it was based on the amount of "Quartz" in the stone which made up a property.
Now this would go someway in explaining "Audible" encounters, but "Visual" explainations I am still working on.
I would say there are more than two types of hauntings too.
I would suggest tracking down anything by Jason Karl or Peter Underwood who go some way in trying to solve these little mysteries.
