There are 240 pubs in Hull (well so i’m told anyway) and I was wondering which is best?
I quite like Ye Olde White Harte but was wondering what you think is the best watering hole in Hull!

yeah JS i’m a big fan of Walters myself. Ye Olde White Harte ise quite godde tooe.
My favourite though is Wellington Inn on Russell Street. Shame they’re put the prices for cherry beer up though.

All the pubs round here ( Beverley Rd & Newland Ave) seem to be geared for the student population and the rest have descended into places selling knock-offs from the local supermarkets.
-
Robbo Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Wellington in is just off Bev Rd CD. If you haven’t been then you should. Its definitely not aimed at the students.
I quite like Dazel on Newland Ave as well. Its a bit pricey but they do a good White Russian. I also like the way you dont pay your bill til you’re ready to leave and the drinks are brought to you. Bit more civilised than queing at the bar.

Old English, Olde White Harte, and The Mission
At one time the City Hotel would have been in my top three as well, but a good few years ago now. Back when it was the postmans pub!

I’m a big fan of Dirty Nellie’s. (Spelling may be wrong)
Giant genga, giant connect four, fuzzball table and live bands.
-
ChiefDragon Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
I think I’m a bit old for the Welly Robbo, probably get stopped at the door by the age police, lol. Thanks anyway.
SC dirty nellies is a good night out, specially when they have live irish bands.
-
Robbo Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Its not The Welly Club. Completely different place CD.
The Wellington Inn – turn down Norfolk street where Lamp and Campinale are. Take 2nd right onto Russel street and Wellington Inn is right there.

What’s the City like these days Laz? Still full of councillors?
-
stevenpotter Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
The Manchester Arms, down scale lane, great traditional little pub, outside seating area, good for this time of year, good selection of real ales, quiet room in the back, local singer every wednesday nights, good atmosphere,in a great area with more pubs only seconds away.
-
Lazarus Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
I haven’t been in for a few years, but it used to be thick with intrigue and plot. Best not to get too p.ssd though, otherwise you never knew where you would end up. Zebra, the Labour Group, or even Fareham’s house!

Christmas eve lunchtime used to be great in the City. Packed out with paralytic postmen and comatose councillors!
-

i agree , the manchester arms down scale lane is the best boozer in the town by far , ive been going in there for the past 10years, the landlady and landlord are fantastic , such a freindly place to drink , keep up the good work , steve and carol

I’ve been in some proper rubbish places in my time and had a great time…purely down to the people i’m with or the event we’ve been celebrating. The wallpaper/barstaff/history of the place have very little bearing on what makes a good venue. Looking at some of the suggestions above, its very unlikely that i’m about to bump into any other "Your Say" users. I must be missing out! ;-)

Are you one of those people that have changed their username for some reason Ed Gee, you seem to think you know me?
Maybe i’m wrong, maybe you’re just a knew tool who likes the look of themselves on the internet? Seeing your 3 favourite pubs listed above, I can see the person you probably are. :-)

Not sure if many may agree, but Wetherspoon pubs offer real ale and good food at a price folks can afford. Not the best maybe, but the price is right.

During the writing and research of "Haunted Hull" I visited a load of public houses which were reporting sightings and met loads of great publicans. It is very rare people are not intrested, and most even took time out to take me "Behind the scenes". I have witnessed tunnels underneath some of Hull’s pubs, and heard some great stories.
It is a shame so many are closing as we have already lost a huge slice of our history.
Hull-Pony, where did you get the photo of Ye Olde White Hart from? Is that Hotham making an appearance in the corner!!

"Seeing your 3 favourite pubs listed above, I can see the person you probably are. :-)" what – a theatrical, salt of the earth trendoid?.
-
Freedoddy Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Sadly, you can tell a lot about peoples tastes in drinking establishments…rugby tavern? I’d have you pegged as an eccentric oddball. I add the word egotistical, but that opinion was formed reading some of the tripe you publish on here!
Remind me again, whats your old username?
-
EdddGeee Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
"I add the word egotistical, but that opinion was formed reading some of the tripe you publish on here!" – yes, tripe that won me £100!. if it’s tripe, why do you lot never stop going on about the stuff i put on here? rugby tavern is a great pub: and why do you to tag anyone as anything? – sounding a bit insecure freedoddy. ROFL!!! etc, etc
-
Freedoddy Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Oh! Have you won £100 on here? I seem to remember you mentioning it 2 or 3 (hundred)times before. If that isn’t the sign of an ego, I don’t know what is. Am I supposed to bow to you or something?
I stumbled into Rugby Tavern a few weeks ago, a friends idea, I merely commented on the fact that it was a drab, dreary place (especially for a Friday night), with substandard alcoholic products and a clientele that looked like it had just been dug up. I just think that people that "rate" that kind of atmosphere are a bit freakish. If you wanna hold your hand up to that…fine, more power to you!
-
EdddGeee Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
etc..etc..ha ha ha. anyway, please post some examples of tripe to remind me, so i don’t do it again.

"Am I supposed to bow to you or something?" – if it makes you feel better. anyway, you still haven’t said what your idea of the best pub on hull is. as usual you resort to puerilism and sniping from the edge.
-

well, why is that tripe?. they are 3 types of person who might be associated with those pubs by someone with a narrow pigeon-holing small mind.

I dont want to get into a slanging match Freedoddy but I dont understand your logic about Rugby Tavern. Substandard products, never! Only two Sam Smiths pubs in Hull, Rugby and Bluebell both well run, serving ale as it should be and reasonably priced, b—-dy cheap in fact. You also said it did not matter about decor etc to like a pub, I think you must have been in on a bad night. I like lunchtime in the week occasionally in Three John Scotts.
-
Chromosome23 Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
The Rugby isn’t a bad pub. It was better before it was remodelled a few years ago, but it’s still okay.

At least we can have a drink and have a meal in a pub overlooking the river,or sit outside and watch the boats going by,unlike the only pub in Hull that had,but will close this week for lack of trade in fat old Hull
-
Freedoddy Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
There isn’t a best pub in Hull. Define the judging criteria and after a bit of a tally-up, you’ll have a winner. Yes, its opinions, but i’m not narrow-minded enough to choose one over all the others.
None of those in Hessle are anywhere near the tap, thats for sure!

Pubs are alot better now they are non-smoking amd the ban isn’t killing pubs the fact is that most pubs only really make a "healthy" profit on food.

-

a pub is also a place where people want to go to unwind after a days work and relax having a pint and smoke in the bar…if people want healthy profit making food….go to a restaurant

Quote Jonny Noah "Pubs are alot better now they are non-smoking amd the ban isn’t killing pubs the fact is that most pubs only really make a "healthy" profit on food."
Apologies Jonny, I don’t like quoting from people normally but, ARE YOU A POLITICIAN?
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bigger "head in the sand" comment on here mate.
The ban isn’t killing pubs? Not all no. Ask any publican how much harder it is to trade. Most I knew a few years ago were struggling to keep their heads above water (with smoking) as it was.
-
JohnnyNoah Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
"Most I knew a few years ago were struggling to keep their heads above water (with smoking) as it was."
Well I was in my local tonight and as it has been for the last 6 months or more it was busier then it was ever before the ban.
It is said that smokers don’t go to pub because of the ban, well I have lots and lots of weak friends that smoke and go to pub just as much as they use to.

Some of the more old fashioned social clubs will be effected and I know the working mens clubs up north have been hit hard with it – why, by the way are there no working men clubs in Hull?
But generally I dont think it has effected most pubs. The places that adapt well to the new rules will survive and ones that dont wont. There’s plenty of packed boozers still.
I think its effected nightclubs a lot more – especially with extended opening hours now playing a part.

Star and Garter, Portand Street, Hull. Really friendly atmosphere, no trouble and karaoke on friday nights in great! Beer prices reasonable too, near bus station, so easy to get to if you don’t want to pay taxi fares.Everyone is made to feel welcome.

ok:
my favourite pub in hull is the old english gentleman. however, i feel i owe it to myself to visit as many of the others as possible, purely to establish a context for evaluation. i also like the rugby tavern, walters scale lane and hop & vine on albion street, truly a hidden gem. blimey, and the wellington on russell street – so many pubs, so little time!!

The best pub in Hull has to be the lark and linnet on spring bank-the bar staff are nice and friendly unlike the plastic poncey wine bars-the staff in lark and linnet actually talk to the customers.
-
Harvey Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
Do you mean the Linnet and Lark on Prince’s Ave? :P
It’s alright I suppose, but I have always found the staff to be quite vacuous and inattentive ie not serving people in turn who have been waiting for a long time on a busy night, and serving their friends first instead. Maybe it was you!

I’ve just been in the beer garden of Olde White Harte. Nice pint of Old Peculier, pleasant weather and the resident blackbird was in good form.
I jumped a bit when a leaf fell on my copy of Fortean Times as I was reading it, but all in all I had a pleasurable half hour or so.
-
Harvey Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
depends when you go, barry. Friday and Saturday nights are really busy so you will wait a long time, but they still seem to do it in some sort of fair chronological order.
The ladies at L&L wander from one end of the bar to another and regularly miss people out in favour of someone several places behind them in the queue, in my experience.
-
barrycoleridge Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
spring bank tavern on funnily enough spring bank is always worth a visit-friendly erudite customers-and the godfather of spring bank-"albo" drinks in there he pretty much runs spring bank him and his henchman-and if you are down spring bank make sure you pop in polar bear similiar to the bar in star wars.

Chromosome23 Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
That crossed my mind, but the blackbird was in front of me, rootling around for crumbs.
Strangely enough, at the moment when the leaf fell on my magazine, I was reading a letter describing an experience with an unknown winged creature in Northumberland. Synchronicity dogs my life.
