Your Say

Your Say has lost its edge

Your Say site is turning out to be just another boring forum with lots of uninteresting twoddle. This site started out so well with many topics being heatedly discussed. Now its just getting full of "whats your pets name" and "what sweets rotted your teeth" and the likes.

I had noticed that myself, but I think it’s partly because after a promotional push, new members sign on and, enjoying the experience, flood the board with their ideas, some of which have been covered before. Then the novelty wears off and most of their names appear less frequently. I have tried posts that I thought were interesting – some have had responses, some haven’t, but people have interests that are different to others. I still like having my six pennarth, and read how others react, and I think as time goes on there will still be a hard core of posters, although with all the name changes it’ll be difficult to identify who they are!! Keep pushing your opinions and you’ll get the response!

The problem in my view is that its become simply TOO moderated, the threads that are created of a similar to nearly ALL forums, basicly people see news stories that are intresting & create the thread/s & see what other peoples replies are…one forum i go on a lot had a newcomer start a thread on "Raining"..OMG the "FE" aka Forum Editor challenged him/her what was its intrest & he/she said that rain is nice..???FFS

  7. Seasider Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

I’ve seen hardly any moderation comments on the posts here. There is a limit as to what people can suggest to discuss. Compare it to a night in the pub – what subjects come up there? If you get less generalised, you end up with a specialist subject forum. As I say I still like putting my views forward, and I can do it instantly – if I had to sit down a write a letter maybe the urge would wear off!

Maybe after five months of this forum the good citizens of Hull have nothing left to say ,or at least nothing interesting. Actually, with the limited education available within the city boundary I’m suprised it lasted as long as it did.R.I.P.

You’re quite right, Karl. This forum was probably started as a way for people to comment on the news, but hardly anybody is interested in the news. Occasionally someone starts a thread on important matters but it is either not picked up at all or degenerates into the usual ignorant ranting. Sad, but indicative of the general attitude to current events.

I agree Karl and I mentioned it in another thread. This site would work better if there were another section for lighter post (but not the all yours bit because of the having to be added.) leaving this part for the real issues.

And to the people saying start your own thread bla bla, when you do and it’s a serious issue not many post on it but everyone seems happy to post on the lighter subjects.

I haven’t looked at the other two threads you mentioned, but what I’ve found is that once people come across a difference of opinion the topic is left for dead. It would appear that the general populus of the city don’t actually like to ‘debate’ anything.

Maybe don’t see this forum as that any way. Maybe they stick to the forum title ‘Your Say’ and feel debate is actually confrontational and avoid it for their own personal reasons.

We truly do seem to be living in a society driven mainly by soundbites and ‘political correctness’. Anything other than that and people react by going silent.

    Shame really.

i disagree that i disagreed with you. disagreeing isn’t debating though, is it.? "debate" suggests discussion of a subject, whereas disagreeing is what 5 year-olds do when you ask a group of them what their favourite colour is.

  25. Chromosome23 Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Quote Sally "This site would work better if there were another section for lighter post (but not the all yours bit because of the having to be added.) leaving this part for the real issues."

Can’t agree. For one thing, how do you define a ‘lighter post’? It’s perfectly possible for a ‘light’ thread to develop into a serious discussion…for example, you could go from a ‘light’ subject such as your favourite breed of dog into a serious debate about dangerous breeds. And splitting the forum into two wouldn’t have any effect on the number of ‘real issue’ threads, you’d simply end up with a huge number of ‘light’ threads and a small number of what you term ‘real issue’ debates.

It’s interesting how the constant jibes about limited education come from those who generally make the least contribution to debate. Usually limiting themselves to one word answers such as ‘yes’, ‘no’ and ‘hear, hear’.

  26. JohnnyNoah Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

    I disagree,

disagree (v.) be of different opinions : "I beg to differ!" disagree (v.) be different from one another

    Thats all it means.

  27. EdddGeee Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

but you arrive at the disagreement through debate, which is a series of reasoned ideas to establish a position in relation to the spoutings of the one who is wrong.

  28. Chromosome23 Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

  38. Robbo Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

So… we’re having a debate here about whether or not we actually debate on this site? Hmmm…

I think some of you are talking rubbish anyway. There’s quite a few heated debates/arguments on here. You cant expect them to happen every day on here. It’d be boring if it did.

People post light hearted things and get a good response because a lot of people like talking about that.

If the topic is "whats your favourite colour" or whatever then dont read it if its not of interest. Simply look for one that is or start one that you find interesting.

Thats the point of this site isn’t it. You get to talk about what YOU want to talk about.

As most of the negative comments are coming from regular users then I cant see how you can blame anyone but yourself if there’s not enough interesting content for you.

The reason why I say such a thing, Jolyon, is because you seem to cause dissent through your obtuseness. It amazes me that you can speak debate and argument in the same breath, as over the past few months, you have done very little of either, and it is usually you who spits the dummy when your ‘opinion’ is railed against by the collective; perhaps this is why you change your name considerably. The reason why I did not answer the question in your "Socks" post, is because I thought the post was becoming so inane, even for a Sunday, I would begin to succumb and start popping mogodon; but the answer you seem to be craving so much was, that if your were married, then I would consider your spouse to have the patience of a saint, and that goes for anyone on this forum who seeks to have a rational discussion regarding the sensible and the ludicrous and has to contend with yourself.

  41. Seasider Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Some posters don’t seem to be able to read an opinion different to their own without taking it as a personal insult. If this were to be the case in a ‘live’ situation, I’m sure it would result in a fight! Also I find the changing of names tiresome and childish. Many forums don’t allow you to do this without reregistering using a different email address. Any subject can be discussed – you don’t have to have knowledge of the subject, just have an opinion.

  42. medsec Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

I don’t know about Chromosome23 being confrontational but IMHO he is rude, SallyCin. I tend to dip in and out of the threads, sometimes adding in a post or two if I feel like it. Often I can’t be bothered to get entangled in the childish wrangling that often goes on, not to mention laying yourself open to some quite nasty, unprovoked comments!

  43. JohnnyNoah Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

I could understand people holding back when wanting to comment on a subject for fear of being unfairly attacked.

I don’t feel the name changing really makes a difference; I like to change my name depending on my mood. The names reflect the way I’m more likely to reply. But if it is so wished I will change back to my original although it will make my banter on another thread a little more interesting. Johnny’s a nicer person then Sally anyway.

  44. Seasider Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Johnny Noah – but why? They have their opinion, and this is the safest way to express it. You may be arguing with the views of a 6ft 12" body building wrestler, but you don’t know it – it’s the anonymity that provides the appeal of putting your little voice when normally, in a crowd, say, you might sit ‘holding your tongue’. As for name changes – apart from one, I don’t know who ‘is’ or ‘was’ who, but your forum name simply serves for the rest of us to know who placed the post, and who we are replying to.

Experienced forum will know this, but to new users!

Waffle is posted, as are interesting subjects. No matter what arrives on the site…some of it grows legs and walks away with itself, others just wither. Thats the way it goes.

For instance, if I can draw your attention to the "Most Viewed Top Ten" at the top, on the left of this page. I give you….

"Shops that used to be household names in Hull" 4890 views so far!!!

Now, I may be no good at the bookies but i’d have taken that subject as an "Each-Way bet" at best. I can’t comment on the subject because I honestly haven’t even looked at the thread.

"Sexism and inequality" is a subject that, i’d have imagined, would have appealed to more people and had more scope for discussion…that subject had about 10% of the interest.

So, it just goes to show that anything goes on here. There’s really no point complaining about lack of content, interesting or otherwise…you just gotta go with the flow.

To many locals it is our history, our recent history. Something we can relate to. I started the subject and am amazed by the response. People have answerd my questions and I have answered theirs. I have been reminded of shops long since forgotten and people have been remembering things they would otherwise have not thought of. The feedback speaks for itself. Yes, you’re right, I’ve mentioned a few times that I was born in Wigan and have only spent the last 10 years in Hull. Thats the only reason that I didn’t have an interest in the subject. Its not waffle. I was merely taking a snapshot of the Number 1 and 10 in the Most Viewed table, comparing them as an example for my point.

It was just meant to show how a seemingly innocent-looking subject can grab the attention of the masses, whilst the heavier subjects can put people off.

If anyone decides to put a "Shops that used to be household names in Wigan" thread up, I’ll be happy to take a full and active part in the subject.

Hi Ed gee,Nice to read someone take up the fact that dairy foods cause allergies as this fact is kept hidden from the public. Milk is baby food. All mammals milk differs in composition, i e cows milk is ideal for a baby calf and not for a human baby,Dogs milk for puppies, cats milk for kittens etc etc. 77/75 percent of people on earth do not take dairy and they are healthier then the countries that do. Milk is "pushed" as preventing osteoporosis but it actually leaches calcium from the bones and in none dairy countries osteoporosis does not happen. Milk IS a leading cause of allergies but the dairy industry do not want u to know and many things are suppressed for vested interests. The Mail a year last Jan. did a BIG write up for the benefits of bringing milk back into schools to make our children healthy and develop into strong adults. Alas the mail sadly lets it,s readers down by NOT giving the anti facts of milk taking I E they refused to print a letter I sent in in similar vein to this one but giving facts. They say they put people first BUT sorry Mail u actually fail people at times by only following the vested interests side. To be lactose intolerant is actually normal as it is not normal to drink dairy foods into adulthood and from another species too. Read up the white stuff by dr. Justine Butler.and many more facts on the great milk myth in this country.People are not told that cows milk can legally contain 400 million pus cells per litre.Plus all the other "muck "that is passed on. I have no doubt that I will get the usual negative reactions from this and ridicule BUT I invite everyone to educate them selves first over the great deception of dairy taking.
