East_park

Hull can boast several beautiful Public Parks in and around the City. It is easy to be biased to the one nearest to where you live, but which one do you consider to be the best and why?

I love East Park, and so do my kids!

It has improved greatly since the redevelopment and the children love watching all the animals in the new compound.

I have heart troubles, so its good to know there is the cafe on hand for a sit down, and "Help" posts fixed all over the place.

The animals look a lot healthier too and I love watching all the birds fly past in the aviary.

think you’ve just inspired me to visit local parks – I honestly can’t answer your question right now. I spend any free time away from here, definitely time to rediscover : )

I agree with Mike. I am not from East Hull, but East Park is wonderful… by far and away the best. Kids these days don’t know how good they’ve got it. How long will it be before some little toe-rags have vandalised it, killed the animals and grafitti’d East Park Massive everywhere in the place!

  4. barrow Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

We like East Park, but it does not have a kids play pool.Pickering Park has one,and in summer, many mums take their kids there to splash and play, and have a picnic there. It is safe and supervised. We take our young grandkids who love it,and well done to Hull City Council for that facility.Just a pity that £5 million on East park has not got that basic facility that families need.

  5. MikeCovell Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

When East Park had reopened after the regeneration, kids were jumping into the water feature that is at either side of the cafe!! Eventually the council erected metal gates to stop this but the hot weather will be back, and so will the kids!

  6. smky57 Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

yes i agree east park is the best the only one thing missing is a pool pity they couldnt bring back lido.

  7. HarryDownes Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

I have not seen East Park since it’s been regenerated as i Live out of the City.My sister who lives nearby says it is wonderful. I hope to visit within the next couple of months.Like smyk57 i used to enjoy days at the Lido. Maybe people out there with some influence might read the yourmail postings and do something about it!

  8. MikeCovell Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

When we had the floods the all new animal compound was like Lido! There are several pictures in the East Park Cafe, showing keeprs herding animals through waist deep water to safety! I remember using the little paddling pool as a child that was in the play area next to the Lido.

  9. HarryDownes Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

The last time I saw Pearson Park it looked pretty run down and neglected. It used to be lovely park.

  10. barrow Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

West Park has a kids paddling pool, but the kids play area is always wet and muddy/Took my grandlad to East Park to see the model boat pond.He wanted a radio controlled boat, and so did I!

I remember it cost 2pence to go the Splash boat at East Park. Its bee. there since 1929 and is one of only two left in the country

  12. HarryDownes Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

I can remember a paddling pool in East Park with a statue of Pete Pan in the centre. I’m sure it was near the James Reckitt Avenue entrence to the Park.

East Park just has to be my favourite, with the recent investments and the variety of things for the kids to do. Look at the distances people will travel to visit East Park(see pic)

  15. MikeCovell Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Not forgetting it will host the Lords Mayor Parade this weekend!

There should be plenty to see and do, and hopefully some nice weather!

  16. HarryDownes Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Very good!- is that you collaborating with the enemy Roberto?

  17. Roberto Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

lol no Harry, although it would have been fun to get involved in what was a great day.

  18. LittleSquishy Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

East park is a lovely park. West park is nice too! I don’t think much to pearson park… never have. Not much other than a big field with some shrubbery and a run down play area. Pickering park is quite a nice park but everytime I’ve been the geese chase me! And peter pan park (near costello) isn’t too bad, I used to fish for those little stickle backs when I was younger. Ahhh memories :o)

  19. HarryDownes Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

littlesquishy-the geese chaseyou. no wonder when you steal your house partners chips I haven’nt forgotten!

  20. HarryDownes Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

I forgot to mention, your the first to mention the the West side of the City. There not saying much from that area.

  21. MikeCovell Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

I bet LittleSquishy was antagonising those Geese!!

  22. LittleSquishy Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Mike, you know me in real life and know I’m not the sort to go chasing geese for fun LOL. Hummm, actually…. Nah I’m kidding!

Harry – As I’m originally from the west of the city those parks are the ones I spent my childhood in! So I thought they’re definately worth a mention.

I think they all have the positives though! Like Peter pan park having the boat rides in the summer, Pickering park is alright for fishing and believe it has a childs pool area now. East park has improved massively since it’s redevelopments and the animals add a nice touch. And last but not least West park has the pool open in the summer so I think they all have their perks :oD

  23. barrow Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

East Park had a small boating lake with boats with paddles.I think it was called Peter Pan pool.but East Park is good.Pity there are no longer boats to hire at Pickering Park, and a pity that the pond is overgrown and neglected. The Council can use local people with a spare few hours to help, and schools could adopt a park as part ofa project.Another thing is for the Council to hold a car boot in all parks on diferent days.that will raise money for that park and could also be a park help day where many local retired folks can come and do their bit

  24. HarryDownes Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Totally agree Barrow- I like the Car boot idea!

  25. TanyaSchofield Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

i love east park for the animals and lovely long walks with my kids and dogs fab since the regeneration and have to agree the only thing missing is the paddling pool :0(

west park mm has tha paddle pool but its not that big and it get soooooo crowded in summer just too busy the kids need pools in all the prks to cater for all the areas imo :0)

west park is just not as good as i remember as a kid :0(

  26. workboresme Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Damn! I remember East Park so well…....does it still have the water ride thingy? I heard it was re-developed. I used to love going there as a young ‘un and climbing the "tower" or whatever that structure was.

Thanks for that info Barrow, I will need to take a look. This pic of East Park is a satellite image on Google map. It shows how massive the park is when viewed from above. It is surprising how many green areas there are in Hull when you scan the areas using Google map-Hull is a city of many contrasts.

  32. kimberley86 Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

is east park the biggest one? i’ve only been once for a live music event so we just stayed where the stages were. I know someone who lives in sheffield and apparently it’s the greenest city in england – more prercentage of open space and parks etc compared to any other city.

  33. barrow Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

All the Hull parks were donated by Hull benfactors.Sir Thomas Ferens donated the land for East Park, and yes,it is the biggest with a wide range of events in summer. The East Coast Run ,where vintage buses started from East Park on their run to Bridlington.,was a good day to see old buses Not sure if it is on this year.Do not forget the model boat pond at the north east part of the park where old men play with radio controlled boats and this old man looks on with envy. Another park just of Wold Road has some very good kids play equipment,as does Pearson Park

  34. HarryDownes Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Did anyone visit East Park this weekend for the Lord Mayor’s Parade?-It would be nice to see a few photos if anybody took any

  35. MikeCovell Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Hi Harry, I posted a thread on the boards regarding the event but got no response to it. I took my son, and we loved it, I didn’t take my camera but wish I had as there was the Delorean Car from the "Back to the Future" movies!

There was plenty to see and do, and as always the atmosphere was great.

There was a problem with waterlogged ground, and to overcome this, the Council had created a bottle neck with gates to ensure no one ventured across the mud! I saw one lad, with an ice cream, cut across only to fall face first!

It was pretty well set out, but smaller than previous years, and the weather was great!

Wonder why they don’t combine it with the Hull Show?

  36. davidhannant Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

West Park, in my view, is the best because of the K.C Stadium. As you probably guess I am a Hull City fan and also an F.C fan. I also prefer it because of Hull Fair which is a yearly Fair. It is the biggest traveling fair in Europe! Thats my view…

East Park,in my view, is the best because of the Animal Park. As you probably guess I am a animal lover.I also prefer it because of the tyre swing which gives you hours of fun. It is the Host of some circus fairs which travel around Europe! Thats my view…

West Park is nice, but is spoiled by having the waste fairground in Walton Street as its next door neighbour. The people living across the road must be sick of looking at this eyesore. Its a pity that West Park could’nt be extended throughout the whole area and landscaped in such a manner that it could still accommodate Hull Fair for that one week in a year.

  46. MikeCovell Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

I went by Walton Street a couple of weeks back on the train from Beverley after a day at the East Riding Archives, and could not believe the amount of rubbish left behind by the market traders.

Is the aviary still in West Park? Last time I was there was about 4 years ago, although I have visited the stadium on several occasions.

Walton Street and West Park-As seen on TV- Traffic Cops!

Like the rest of you out of all of the Parks East Park is the best in what it has however when they were first granted to the people both West & East Parks were more or less same with a few differences already mentioned. Then the changes began. East Park has its gates locked each day and so can apply for all sorts of grants and the like. West Park is not locked it is a 24 hour park and because of this no grants can be obtained for improvements. So slowly over the years it has slipped behind East Park. What West Park does boast is the outdoor theatre and plans are afoot to restore this as there are very few in the country. We even have the animals and birds to boast about. We do have a stadium attached to ours. I do agree about the Market waste left after the market traders have gone but isn’t the clean up the responsibility of the council and not the traders.

It appears "YOURSAY" readers have got one of their wishes granted! Many people on this thread asked why East Park no longer had some sort of paddling pool for the kids.

Well I am pleased to announce that a brand new "Childrens water area" will open in East Park in time for the 6 weeks holidays!!

Industrial Machinery is on site now in the area were the deer used to roam, and several noticable features can be seen. Paths have been dug, and large rocks have been assembled, so its taking shape.

We noticed the terrain was changing so I asked a "Parkie" who told me of the plan!!

  49. joe1992b Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

If you have been to East Park recently you will see that where the animals used to be, opposite the playground there is construction of a new paddling pool taking place. This will be open for this summer. Fingers crossed we have some sunshine.

I dont know if the work in the park is complete east park that is.Looking well but i think there are still areas for improvment like the lake started well ended half finished when money ran out. Then filled back up with rain half done.Moneys awarded from lottery fund spent on other improvments looks well.In my opinion if the work started where it finished earlyer the lake fully dredged, planted, stocked with quality fish the wildlife it would attract and anglers who pay descent money to fish quality lakes like this could be would fund itself. But keep up good work if not finished looking good.

  51. MikeCovell Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

It is still a work in progress Geoff. I think revenues from the recent funfairs will go someway to subsidising it, at least I hope they do. Then there is the Model Boat show planned for this monday (May 26th 08), which weather permitting, should be a nice day.

Anyone know if "Hull Show" is on this year?

  52. swampduck Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

East Park was good even before the regeneration but now it is brilliant. It would have been good to have another Lido there though,or maybe the Council couldn’t afford the upkeep and staffing.

east park has always figured in my life… i was born and raised down kent street, holderness road, we where always at the park on weekends—- holidays and after school. its the best park i think.we had great times there.we would take bottles of water and bread and jam or sugar sandwiches.it was fun in those days. and it is still the best park. annieann

  54. HarryDownes Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Your quite right annneejoyce,I liked it so much when I was a kid I used to walk there from North Hull Estate via Sutton Road at least once a week. The distance never put me off and it was worth the journey.

  55. barrow Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Just seen in the Mail that there are problems with the brutality to animals there, the pulling up of shrubs and the broken glass bottles. It does seem such a shame that whatever is done to improve a park, there are some that abuse it.Last time we went, there was a young lad of about five poking a stick through the bars at a goat. His mum just stood there and said nothing.I told a warden who said it happens all the time, and walked away. And yes,it wants a play pool, but the money ran out.Good one in Pickering Park in summer with good supervision.Suggest Hull Council hold a car boot sale every sunday in East Park to raise money for a play pool there.200 booters at £5 a car is £1,000 a week. Then again,Billy Smarts Circus is in that park this week. Why cant that rent go to a play pool? The Council look at grants when it could look at income

I’ll say thay that Pearson Park is the best for me simply because it’s my ‘local’. There is a minority in all our local parks (including Queen’s Gardens – the fact that the police station is there doen’t seem to bother those intent on ‘getting off their heads’- there’s a video on You-Tube with a group taking drugs there and you can see the police station behind them!)intent on spoiling it for everyone else. The best feature of Pearson Park in my opinion is the Penna family’s cafe. Ice-creams,simple snacks and a good cup of tea at realistic prices. Not of this couple-of-quid for a frothy coffee nonsense. And no, I’m not related or on commission!

  59. barrycoleridge Submitted 2 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!
