Smileys

To the moderators…

Is there any chance of adding "smilies" for use in posts at all?

This would enable users to set a tone for their comments. Far too many people are taking things out of context and taking things at face value. Its common for users of messageboards to jump to conclusions and take things the wrong way, this can obviously lead to bad feeling.

It would probably lighten the tone a bit too.

Like assuming that council house dwellers expect everything on a plate?

Hear! Hear! I totally agree with that.

No, not all… only about 50%!

    Although we dont have any flashy graphics, you can still use ‘emoticons’. Here are some of the most common ones;

    :) for a smile.

    :D for a big grin/laughter.

    :( for a sad face.

    ;) for a wink.

    :* for a kiss.

:P to stick your tongue out.

I agree, I use them anyway :o) Although I think some people may have wondered why I was doing it. It’s a good thing, sometimes people take things the wrong way when you type cause you don’t have the facial expressions to work with aswell, Like if someones joking, the winking face helps ;o)

A quote facility would be handy as well. I wouldn’t advocate a P.M. option as this can lead discussions into a secondary ‘background’ community!

  6. medsec Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Yes a quote facility would be very handy. I tried to copy and paste something and it went completely pear-shaped! You have to type the whole thing out.

"I tried to copy and paste something and it went completely pear-shaped! You have to type the whole thing out." left-click and drag to make item go blue, right click select copy, line up cursor in reply window, right click on paste – hey presto!:-)

A quote facility would be great. I’ve thought about setting up a macro for ‘Quote MB’s-N’ but the idea brought on a severe depression.

And I agree with Seasider…no PM’s! And please never ever think about adding post counts!

Thanks for the example there. As we can see, cavynaut has made an assumption about somebodys post. Unfortunately, apart from being wrong, he’s even managed to mix up the name of the person that posted the original quote.

shouldn’t we really be getting our voices heard by local councilors etc?

  15. Freedoddy Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

OK. Simple explanation for you cavynaut…

You jumped to a conclusion about what I said which was wrong. The person who made the comment was someone else. Easy enough for you?

Oh, and leave the ego at home (soon to be a council house you hope), just because you make the letters page most days in the HDM doesn’t make you a star in my eyes.

Debates I can manage, arguments I was born to do.

"..a cheap way for the daily mail to fill its pages with cheap content?" – a printed version of radio phone-ins. eventually, when physical newspapers become obsolete, this will be the norm. a self-updating portable screen with content generated by its readers and paid for by advertising. no printing, no journalists, no buildings – just a server station manned by a handful of "Content Filterers". There already is a secret £100 winners forum – don’t tell me you haven’t been told!!.

  20. Robbo Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

"but isnt it really just a cheap way for the daily mail to fill its pages with cheap content?"

I think it might be a wee bit cheaper to hire an extra journalist rather than pay for a web design company to make a site, then pay for all the marketing of it, then pay the wages of moderators to keep an eye on things.

  21. YourMailWill Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Shhhh, don’t tell everyone about the secret winner’s forum…. it’s supposed to be a secret!

To be honest technically speaking depending on the software you would have to change the forum software completely to incorporate any of the above. Which may cause lots of problems like data base compatibility issues. It’s a lot of effort to just to put a smile after Freedoddy’s comments, best we just ignore him instead.

Actually, don’t bother bud. We’ll agree to disagree.

Technically, Jonny Noah, the hosting software for this forum may already have things like that included…but may have been disabled. You can ignore that.

What are you on about willow? When saying that somebody may be watching…I was merely referring to the fact that you have a habit of calling people names and putting people down and the moderators may be clocking you. You can save your conspiracy theories for some other time.

"Veiled threats"...are you having a laugh? Its an "Internet Message Forum", not the third reich, people disagree on them all the time. Please don’t enter this fantasy land wholeheartedly…its supposed to be here to allow people to chew the fat and have a gossip.

Actually Jonny Noah, i’ve no interest in seeing my name in print (unlike some). I’m here to agree and disagree with people where I see fit. Most people on here can handle that and keep themselves to themselves. Others tend to take offence and like to get into a rumble themselves…doesn’t it take two to tango after all. Fine, join a gang of internet bullies if that floats your boat but if you think i’m gonna stop coming on because someones having a go at me, think again.

Just because I have no interest in discussing Hull in bygone times (due to not remembering it)or talking about what my teachers were like at school in the 60’s…that seems to make you an outcast around these parts. I’ll say my piece, just as everybody else around here gets to do, if that upsets someone, fine. Just don’t resort to name calling please guys…thats just childish.

If you do…i’ll take it all day and all night.

Aww diddums mr agitator, you thought it was your job to annoy people with a name like that. It appears you’re more of a pussycat than an agitator. Are you annoyed that someones getting more attention than yourself?

Is there just you two gangmembers on at the moment to try to give me grief? Do you get some morbid satisfaction from trying to put other site users down or something? Tell me. What is it?

You can maybe try to use the site for the purpose it was created or you can keep picking arguments. That would just spoil it for other users if you want to carry the childishness on.

So, in respect to the original topic we would consider smilies, quotes, and a possible chat room, but no PM facility. What do the mods say?

  39. Freedoddy Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

The mods are a little too quiet on most things in my opinion, a little moderating would clean the place up a bit. The chatroom is pretty clean looking which is ok in one sense, although one or two of the suggestions made would certainly give the place a more interactive feel.

  40. JohnnyNoah Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

“Fine, join a gang of internet bullies if that floats your boat” What are you on about?

You have a very poor attitude and little respect for others, think about that before you get upset about over others actions. Do to others, as you would have them do to you.

In your reply to me you left out the bit about the thread subject. My point is valid, sorry about that.

  41. Chromosome23 Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

I definitely think that the mods should clamp down a bit more on the personal abuse. Just off the top of my head, and without trawling through the threads, in the few weeks that I’ve been posting on here, I’ve been called ignorant, a bully and a **stearer. It would be nice if we could all remember that it’s the post you’re replying to, if you’re unsure of what it is that someone is trying to say, then ask. Don’t just jump to the first available conclusion.

  42. YourMailWill Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Allow me to respond to some of the comments made above:

As moderators, we try to stay as ‘hands off’ as possible, only intervening when we think it is absoulutely neccessary. We would rather let the users determine the agenda of the forum and each individual post and be ‘self-policing’ in terms of the tone and politeness of each debate.

If you feel another user has posted unsuitable content, whether personal abuse or anything else, please do not hesitate to alert us either via the "Unsuitable Content? Report it!" button that appears on the post, or by emailing us at yourmail@mailnewsmedia.co.uk. Please include as much information as possible, eg; the URL (the unique address of the page that the post is on), the details of the post/reply that you are referring to, and an explanation of why you think it is inappropriate. This will help us to deal with the matter as quickly as possible.

Whilst on the subject, I would like to take this opportunity to remind all users that we do not allow the use of swearing or foul and abusive language. While everybody has different ideas about what this means, I think most people should be able to err on the side of caution to avoid causing offence. Some users have been employing partial self-censorship of such words or phrases by substituting some letters with other symbols (*!#@£ etc). This is a grey area, but often if it is still clear what you mean, then we view this as the same as you spelling the word out in full.

We are taking note of your suggestions for improvements and additions to the functionality of the website. If you have any further ideas, keep posting them here!

  43. Freedoddy Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Quote Jonny Noah You have a very poor attitude and little respect for others, think about that before you get upset about over others actions. Do to others, as you would have them do to you."

I’m not upset about anybody, just making a point that I say my piece about a particular subject, on subject and people get abusive. Now, it seems that yourself, cavynaut, willow, theagitator like to jump on the bandwagon and have a pop at moi at any given opportunity, regardles of whether i’m taking part in a thread or not. Have I really upset you all that much?

My point is that i’ve been trying recently to play things down a litle but theres no letting up for some people. Yet, apparently, i’m the one with the bad attitude! Thats a form of bullying, where a few people jump on another user for the daftest of reasons.

I was bringing the subject to the attention of the moderators just to see how the land lies. Now I know. I’ve mentioned before that i’ve mellowed a bit on forums in the last year or two and have been unusually for me, defensive and placid. It seems that isn’t working. Maybe I should take a trip down memory lane myself and relive my past a little more.

Just say what you think freedo, I do. Why pretend to be something or someone your not. Just remember what I told you before. If you can’t take it don’t give it. Carry on and if I see you in the pub I’ll buy you a beer.

  45. Freedoddy Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Not exactly trying to be someone else Willow , just trying to do things in a different way. I think i’ve proved myself more than capable of taking it…flagging it up was for the reason that I didn’t think that this site was going to turn into one of "those" places sme of us have seen before. Personally, I think this site is frequented by some nice people and would hate to see them not returning because of the offensive manner of some users. My problem is that i’ve not been giving it enough, hence people thinking that i’m a bit of a soft touch.

  46. Willow Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

You’re in twice today (21/04/08). That’s not baaaad. Or are ewe trying to pull the wool over our eyes with your posts of a "controversial nature"? Mint quality posts, we’re all flocking to the newsagents. I bought the HDM and I’m not in at all…should I feel fleeced? :-)

Forget the smilies, we need more sheep puns!!!!

  48. JohnnyNoah Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Right, if you were a soft touch I wouldn’t waste my time arguing with you.

And if you think me, Cavy and Willow are teaming up look at the other post we have all had our disagreements with each others view and have moved on after having our say.

You didn’t get abuse because of your views but because of you asking for it! “Debates I can manage, arguments I was born to do. Try your luck Jim!” If you would call what you got abuse I doubt anyone else would.

All I did to you was comment on the way you was “trying” to but others down.

Then you decided to try and get me, by making out my web application information was incorrect. But you didn’t read it properly. Which upset you?

If you don’t want the flack don’t make your self a target and if you don’t mind it stop going on about it. You say you can be and have been worse, then what you complaining about. It really makes no difference what you once were and why would you even tell us that?

On the other treads you haven’t give me a reason to negatively converse with you and so I haven’t.

Now this is way off the thread subject and is getting very tiresome.

I will say no more on this grievance.

Actually, the reference about the forum software was a response to this…

"technically speaking depending on the software you would have to change the forum software completely to incorporate any of the above"

I was merely refining the point that you "may not" have to completely change the software as you were sugesting. You contradicted yourself, I just explained it in laymans terms for the non-technical users of the site.

Yes, I noticed the HDM debut. Maybe the mods thought I felt left out and stuck me in to help me feel wanted! :-) That’ll teach me for lamb-asting my non appearances in the past. I can speak normally when the mooo-d takes (sorry, had to delve into general farmyard puns there…).

Right Freedo, you started this post, suggestions for the site. I can’t be, er , bothered (had to check myself there) to read through it all. Are we using smiley faces and the like or what?

  59. Freedoddy Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Why are you asking me? That was my suggestion. Pretty sure the mods said it was a no-go.

My next question is (to move things on a notch)...what potential board changes are available with the software that could make the site more user friendly/interactive. Reason being that these generic-style forums leave the content as the sole draw of the site. I’m merely stating that some users like interactive gadgets with their forums.

  60. JohnnyNoah Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Great about the tread subject. “"technically speaking depending on the software you would have to change the forum software completely to incorporate any of the above" I was merely refining the point that you "may not" have to completely change the software as you were sugesting. You contradicted yourself,” I clearly put depending! And later added what the other would in tale. If any one else thinks I’m contradicting my please say. Although it makes little difference I feel I must add that I design such applications and very little changes can take a lot of work.

Thanks Dragon Killer, having moderated forums in the past and implemented such changes personally, I felt suitably qualified to comment. As you say, these facts pale into insignificance as the wish is unlikely to be granted. Its a moot point.

Care to draw a line under it?

  63. JohnnyNoah Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

Oh I guess we should. Although as a moderator I can’t but think you were performing action outside of your job description. But then again maybe I’m wrong.

Question for the mods can you or would you perform such tasks on the application such as changing modules or turning on such forum changes? Or would you have a website expert deal with this?

And now I’m curious what software/ scripting languages do you use for this application?

  64. Freedoddy Submitted 3 months ago Unsuitable Content? Report it!

I didn’t have a job description to be honest as I wasn’t paid to do it. Sometimes you just get invited on social/holiday sites to act as moderator, small time forums with basic applications.

I’m curious too mods…is the current format for the forum a finished article? Or are there other tools that you are considering adding to the site to make it more interactive?

Also, I notice in the HDM that there are just short of 1000 signed up members (re: the recent full page adverts). As you’re aware, there are maybe 20 spammers (of which i could consider myself one), then maybe another 50 or so "casual" posters. I appreciate that you may have a timescale for implementing possible changes but don’t you agree that trying out differentthings could get more people to add the site to their favourites box?

You could implement a voting system on each post, and glam it up with dynamic chart system; such as SkySports.com’s charting system [YM could also assist by phrasing the vote]. You’ve already got the turn on and turn off voting implemented, but a direct vote on the actual topic may help people phrase the post in a more pragmatic way. Then HDM could find some inspiration for news stories rather than bits of sausage roll and the Lord Mayor’s Parade.

You must be Logged in to post replies.
