The mystery of Jack the Ripper has baffled detectives for more than a century. No one has ever been able to identify the man who stalked the streets of London’s East End in 1888, killing women. But one Hull man has devoted his time to tracking down the killer – and told the Mail there are plausible suspects linked to Hull and the East Riding.

Mike Covell, of Severn Street, east Hull, was made redundant three years ago. He has since dedicated his time to answering the question which has eluded police since 1888 – who is Jack the Ripper? Mr Covell, 30, has now started writing a book on the subject. He said: “I first got involved in the case when I visited Ferens Arts Gallery in Hull, and they told me they had Jack the Ripper’s paintings.

“I did some investigating and it led me into all sorts of different areas. “There have been 120 suspects who have been involved so far and some have strong links to Hull.” Among them is Frederick Bailey Deeming, a bigamist who married in Beverley and honeymooned in Hull. He was later jailed in the city for fraud and went on to kill two of his wives by cutting their throats.

Robert Donston Stephenson, born and raised in Hull, was another suspect. Stephenson was accused of the killings by one of his friends, but told police he knew the identity of the killer – a doctor at the London Hospital. Both men were staying in Whitechapel at the time of the murders. Mr Covell said: “I’m writing a book about the connections called Jack The Ripper: From Hell, From Hull. “I have all the newspaper articles published around here about the case since 1888. I would like to release them as a complete record.”

Jack the Ripper murdered 11 women from 1888 to 1891 in areas around Whitechapel. There have been several theories into the killings and many films based on the case – including 2001’s From Hell, starring Sir Ian Holm as Ripper suspect Sir William Gull. But Mr Covell is sceptical the true identity of Jack the Ripper will ever be found. He said: “Every time a new person is identified, there is a strong case for it being them.” Mr Covell regularly posts on the user- generated website Your Mail.

City men had links with killings

According to Mike Covell, the following are two Hull men who were suspected of being Jack the Ripper. Frederick Bailey Deeming: Born in Liverpool, Frederick came to Beverley to marry one of his wives. During their honeymoon at the Royal Station Hotel in Hull, he defrauded a jewellery ship in Whitefriargate out of hundreds of pounds of goods and got a steamer to Uruguay, where he was caught by Hull police and jailed for a year in the city. He was alleged to have killed two of his wives by cutting their throats. He apparently dated Catherine Eddowes, a Ripper victim.

Robert Donston Stephenson: Born in Charles Street, Hull city centre, he went on to become a customs officer at Hull’s ports. The freelance journalist later moved to London with his wife, working on the Pall Mall Gazette. He wrote about black magic and human sacrifice. He was listed as a suspect in several books and was rumoured to have killed his wife, although this was later discovered to have been unfounded.

Let this unsolved mystery continue to exist. Most humans love the intrigue that goes with it. We don’t really need to know, do we?

I have not found a solution Quatermass, I am merely looking at the 8 previously named suspects with links to Hull.
