Aldi

from the Hull Daily Mail/East Riding Mail on Friday, October 10

Hundreds of excited shoppers queued up to see the opening of the new Aldi supermarket in Willerby. The cut-price store, which measures 1,125sq metres, was unveiled at its site in Great Gutter Lane, next to Waitrose, yesterday. After the ribbon was cut by store manager Dave Baker, the first 100 customers were handed a “golden ticket” with prizes including a laptop, digital camera and wine. Raymond Clayton, 70, of Spring Bank West, Hull, was the lucky winner of the top prize – a 32in LCD screen TV. He said: “I am gob-smacked, completely speechless. “I came to the shop to buy a television anyway, but I was just going to get a 19in one.” The Willerby store is the fifth in the area, with others in Beverley Road and Preston Road, Hull, Hessle and Withernsea. The German-owned retail chain is perhaps best known for its special offers on Sundays and Thursdays. On these days, new limited edition items are sold at discounted prices. Lucy Eyre, Aldi’s East Yorkshire area manager, said: “We bring in products from 42in televisions to sportswear. Our customers can look on the website and in-store to see what is coming up next as these items tend to sell out very quickly.” Shopper Susan Drewry, 61, of Kirk Ella, said she was very pleased with the opening of the new store. She said: “I have been travelling to the one in Hessle so it’s brilliant to have one just round the corner – besides, my husband likes the beans here. “I think it will do really well. Waitrose is a bit expensive for some people, but this is ideal, especially for pensioners.” Links Aldi www.aldi.co.uk Waitrose www.waitrose.com
