Reunion to raise cash for memorial to lost trawlermen
from the Hull Daily Mail/East Riding Mail Monday, October 13
Fishing heritage group Stand will hold its next Hessle Road reunion next month. The event will be staged at the New Walton Club, Walton Street, on Friday, November 7. All proceeds will go to Stand’s appeal to create a permanent memorial to the city’s lost trawlermen at St Andrew’s Dock.
Stand, which organises Hessle Road reunions twice a year, recently announced the fund had passed the £100,000 mark.
Hull City Council is currently in talks with Hull Forward, property developer Paloma and Stand to discuss how the memorial could spearhead the regeneration of St Andrew’s Dock.
The last Hessle Road reunion was held in May and attracted hundreds of guests, raising more than £2,000 for the appeal.
Local singer and comedian Mike Lodge will top the bill at the reunion next month. He will be joined on the night by compere John Daniels and other acts including Dave Lee, Serena Williams and Dave Montana.
The evening will also include a raffle, bingo and tombola. Stand chairman Adam Fowler said the reunion is an event to look forward to. He said: “Hessle Road reunions are a great opportunity to meet old friends and enjoy quality entertainment while raising funds towards the memorial to Hull’s lost trawlermen.”
Tickets for the Hessle Road reunion cost £5 each, which includes a raffle. Anyone who would like to book a ticket is asked to call (01482) 572829 or (01482) 351445 for more information.

Make a stand at reunion
from the Advertiser Series Wednesday, November 5
Hundreds of people will gather next week to celebrate Hull’s fishing and trawling heritage. More than 500 residents from the Hessle Road area will attend their latest reunion, held twice a year to bring people from one of Hull’s closest-knit communities together.
Entertainment on the night will be headlined by comedian Mike Lodge, with other acts including singers Dave Lee, Serena Williams and Dave Montana.
The biannual event is organised by Stand, Hull’s fishing heritage group, and all proceeds from the reunion will go towards the organisation’s memorial to the thousands of Hull trawlermen lost at sea.
Stand chairman Adam Fowler believes it is a perfect way for the people of Hessle Road to celebrate their history.
He said: “We hope the reunion will be a quality night out and a chance for people to catch up with old friends and meet people.
“We hope to raise about £2,500 for the memorial.
“But this isn’t about the money, it is about celebrating the tradition of a community that suffered a lot of hardship.
“Hessle Road was once described as a ‘village in a city’ and that’s exactly what it is, as the people there are closer than in any other community.
“Sadly the road no longer has a focal point, but that’s what we are trying to create.”
The Hessle Road Reunion will be held at the New Walton Club, Walton Street, west Hull, on Friday.
It will include a raffle, with the first prize of a two-night mini-cruise for two with P&O Ferries.
There are still some tickets, which cost £5, still available by calling Ron on (01482) 572829 or Anita on (01482) 351445.
