A talented young magician from the city is about to travel to Blackpool to take part in the World Junior Magician Championships. Jack Gleadow, who attends Andrew Marvell Business and Enterprise College, has been practising magic since he was just five and became a member of the Junior Section of the Hull Circle of Magicians at 10. Jack’s magical heroes include Tommy Cooper, Derren Brown and local entertainer Vik Pandolfr. He says his style is inspired by Tommy Cooper. The schoolboy star, known to his friends as Magic Kid, already holds the Spooner Trophy and the Arthur Setterington Junior Award for Close-Up Magic. Jack will battle it out in six categories: comedy magic, manipulation, illusion, general magic, close-up magic and card magic. If Jack’s challenge is successful, he will win the title, the trophy and a share of the £2,750 prize fund.

    Jack’s magic hat trick

from the Advertiser Series Wednesday, July 30

A young magician has been pulling nothing but aces from his hat after claiming a trio of wins in magic competitions testing his stage show and close-up ability.

Jack Gleadow, 13, has followed success in London and at the Scottish and Northern Magic Convention in Scarborough with his third Spooner Trophy for the Young Magician of Humberside in a row.

But out of all the trophies Jack has won recently, it is the Arthur Setterington Trophy – part of the Humberside Young Magicians Close-up Competition – that means most to the Hull lad. Jack, from Southcroft Drive, east Hull, said: “Although I am proud of all my achievements and enjoy stage magic the most, I think it’s the Arthur Setterington Trophy that means the most to me.

“I’ve won it three times in a row and unfortunately Arthur died two years ago aged 81, just three weeks after I won the trophy for the first time.

“Arthur was one of the first people to encourage me about my magic.”

Jack’s current act includes gags, the disappearance of an audience member’s ring and rope tricks.

His dad Ian said: “We are very surprised how well Jack has done in a very short time at such a young age.

“His success hasn’t changed him at all. He really is not that bothered about winning, he just wants to entertain and make people laugh and smile.

“A lot of big names in magic have predicted a big future for Jack and say he’s a natural talent, a born entertainer and he has funny bones.”

Looking to the future, Jack could soon be showing off his tricks to magic fans across the Atlantic.

Members of the Magic Circle’s headquarters in London have nominated Jack for a possible tour of America next year.

They are taking two DVDs of Jack to the States to wow American audiences ahead of next year’s tour line-up being decided.

Jack said: “It would be brilliant to go to America and perform there. Hopefully they will like my comedy magic.”
