Our Special Day
The centenary is over The bunting’s taken down The marquees are dismantled The Actors back in Town
The clergy fold their robes away The band its instruments pack The lively dancers all have gone Ah me! Alas, Alack
Yet I think it’s not all over It’s not “all over” quite ‘Praps far hence in the future You’ll wake in bright moonlight
And fancy you heard the siren wail Then go to the window and gaze You’ll see how it really was That brightest of summer days
The crowd is come The tents are there The ladies smile at the stall At the men in the blazers and boaters – there’s laughter overall
The children dance The band plays on Historic walks begin Wardens, policemen, newsboy stir the memories within
Things are not always what they seem They’re all there, The Oval, the trees You’ve not awakened from a dream You’ve created memories.
