The city is taking part in this year’s annual National Playday on Wednesday.

This year’s campaign highlights the need for children to experience challenging play. The aim is to give youngsters a better idea of how to deal with risks in everyday life.

To mark this year’s theme, communities will be organising adventurous activities, such as go-kart building, assault courses and tree-climbing. The playday will take place in Queens Gardens, city centre, from 11am to 3pm.

Attractions on offer will include crate climbing, cycling with a difference, bouncy castles, fairground rides, den-building, a digital playground, air rocket games and treasure hunts.

Councillor Christine Randall, lead member for children and young people’s services, said: “Engaging children in fun and educational activities is an important tool to help them develop socially.

“The council is proud to support this excellent campaign, which encourages children to play together safely as well as being able to take part in fun and challenging activities.”

Hull has gained national recognition for it’s event to celebrate National Playday, which is organised by the Hull Creative Play Network – a multi-agency group of play and recreational agencies from across the city.

This year will be the sixth event of this kind the group has organised and it hopes to build on the success of previous years, when as many as 3,500 children and young people attended with their families.

We asked the question ‘is it important to be part of a community?’ as a poll on the day.

The answer was a unanimous YES

We asked the children to draw us a picture of the best thing in the area they live in.

We recieved hundreds of beautiful, colourful pictures from children of all ages.

The pictures were judged by Barbara Ryan (pictured left) and Naomi Robinson (pictured right) from Hull Children’s Fund – part of Hull City Council’s Children and Young People Services.

    Winners to follow shortly

    Playing like they used to

from the Hull Daily Mail/East Riding Mail Thursday, August 7

These boots were definitely made for walking, despite being just a little on the large side.

Nicholas Lewis, three, was among youngsters having fun in Queens Gardens in Hull as part of National Playday.

Den building, go-karting and crate climbing were some of the activities that kept scores of children amused as the gardens were transformed into a huge play area.

Youngsters were freed from the so-called cotton wool culture that can restrict play and encouraged to challenge themselves with an array of adventurous activities.

The theme for this year’s event was based on research by Play England that highlighted a need for children to experience play like their parents used to – in a natural environment and free from undue worry about risk.

Seventy-seven per cent of children who took part in a survey said they wanted more opportunity to play adventurously.

Adrian Voce, director of Play England, said: “This year, we want to help children shed some of that cotton wool they’ve been wrapped up in.

“Challenging and adventurous play is integral to children’s development and helps them to grow up as happy and confident individuals.”

Diane Dale, 34, of west Hull, said: “I have brought my two girls, Amy and Lucy, and they are absolutely loving it.

“It is a brilliant idea. I think children can be wrapped up too much in cotton wool, but as long as parents are sensible, children should be able to enjoy playing.”

Ann Lovelock, 37, of east Hull, who took four children to the event, said: “They have tried a bit of everything and have loved it. It is nice to see them playing outside and mixing with each other.”

Hull has gained national recognition for its Playday event, which was organised by the Hull Creative Play Network.
