Revved up and ready to roll

from the Hull Daily Mail/East Riding Mail Friday, August 8

Following the success of the inaugural Revved Up Race Day in 2007, there’s even more on the agenda geared towards the region’s males at this year’s event.

Being held at Beverley Racecourse next Thursday, August 14 – the day after the ever popular Journal Ladies’ Day meet – organisers of Revved Up Race Day are delighted to be hosting the first visit by Motors.co.uk’s Big Blue Wheel.

The Mail’s online motoring partner, Motors.co.uk features the Big Blue Wheel in a new TV and press advertising campaign.

The iconic giant inflatable steering wheel, which measures 10ft in diameter, will be in the centre of the racecourse, alongside lots of other attractions.

The leading motoring website hopes to find the newest member of the site’s Real ReView panel at the event – one lucky car enthusiast will get the chance to join the Motors.co.uk Real ReView panel and test drive and review brand new cars for the website.

The Big Blue Wheel advertising campaign has been created in response to a national survey of 1,033 car buyers that found that 63 per cent of buyers feared being “ripped off” when purchasing a car.

Despite this, an estimated 4.9 million motorists research their next car online. The major new advertisement campaign has been launched to reassure car buyers and to highlight the security features of Motors.co.uk which include free history checks to ensure the car has not been written-off or stolen, scrapped, imported or exported to ensure you have real peace of mind when searching for your next car.

The Real ReView was launched at Silverstone racecourse, in February, by Fifth Gear’s Vicki Butler-Henderson. Budding Jeremy Clarksons wanting to enter the competition can find out more by going to Motors.co.uk and emailing a review of their own car to the site.

Katie Armitage, marketing manager at Motors.co.uk, said: “Our new brand creative underlines the Motors.co.uk guiding principle of giving the car buyer reassurance with the information and advice they need to get a great deal. It further underpins the important security features such as free history checks that we provide.

“We launched the Real ReView panel of video car reviewers to give car buyers the real-life, practical advice they need to help them choose their perfect car and I’m sure the latest member from East Yorkshire will prove an excellent addition to the panel.”

Among the other attractions at Revved Up Race Day will be Casino Knights, with their fun casino tables; a putting and chipping golf challenge by Forest Pines Golf & Country Club Hotel, where you can win a superb golf package while raising money for Dove House; an eight-seat Ferrari simulator; a mechanical horse and the Motors.co.uk Horsey Hopper Challenge.

Sponsored by the Mail, Revved Up Race Day offers a full horse racing programme as well as a host of entertaining attractions, including a racing challenge simulator that allows up to eight people to race each other simultaneously, in virtual racing cars.

Last year, British motor racing driver and presenter of TV’s “Fifth Gear”, Jason Plato, was at Revved Up Race Day when visitors put his driving skills to the test by competing against him on the racing simulator.

For a second year, Dove House Hospice has teamed up with Beverley Racecourse and the Mail for Revved Up Race Day.

The event will raise funds for the hospice, which offers specialist palliative care to adults with life-limiting illnesses.

Based in Chamberlain Road, east Hull, Dove House is an independent, self-financing organisation which provides all its services free of charge. It offers in-patient and day therapy services, plus many other clinics and treatment methods and aims to care for the whole family, providing a counselling and bereavement service when it is needed.

Though Revved Up Race Day is a great opportunity for the men to make their mark, the ladies are welcome to share in the attractions that are expected to bring thousands of people flocking to the Westwood course.

Sue Tingle, the Mail’s events and promotions manager, said: “We had a great day last year and I am confident that this year the event will be bigger and even better.” M otors.co.uk’s Big Blue Wheel will be making the East Riding its first port of call in a tour of events nationwide. It is planned to make a return visit to the region in September when it will be the centre of attraction at Hull’s Princes Quay.

It’s our turn to dress to impress

from the Hull Daily Mail/East Riding Mail Friday, August 15

First it was the ladies and then the men who strutted their stuff at one of East Yorkshire’s largest social occasions. After being revved up by the ladies in their finery, male punters dressed up to the nines for their own special day at Beverley Racecourse yesterday.

Horse racing stepped up a gear for Revved Up Race Day, the male-oriented answer to the popular Journal Ladies’ Day at the Westwood course on Wednesday.

The two-day meeting gave both women and men the chance to show off their best bib and tucker, while enjoying an entertaining day out at the races.

Revved Up was sponsored by Mail News and Media in association with Dove House Hospice to raise money for patients with life-limiting illnesses.

Race-goers praised Beverley Race Company for organising two days of outstanding racing on the picturesque pastures.

Punter Alan Martin, 48, of County Antrim, Northern Ireland, said: “It is the first time I have been to Beverley races and I’ve had a brilliant two days.

“I attend race meetings across Ireland and the north of England and I’ve never seen anything like Ladies’ Day – it was spectacular.

“Revved Up is different, but there was still a great atmosphere and the racing was superb.”

As well as enjoying a flutter on the gee-gees, revved up revellers also enjoyed “big boys” toys, such as a Ferrari simulator.

Craig Hillary, 25, of Meadowbank Road, west Hull, visited the Revved Up races with friends, Iain Paterson, 25, and Warren Lewis, 21, both of Leconfield, near Beverley.

He said: “It was great to have a day out at the races with the lads, which has been organised with blokes in mind.

“Everyone knows about Ladies’ Day, but it’s nice to have something a bit more for the men.”

Despite the male emphasis the ladies were not deterred from coming out to enjoy themselves.

Suzie Hall, 22, of Driffield, said: “Men are allowed at Ladies’ Day, so we decided to come along and enjoy their fun.”

Thousands wallowed in the success of the two-day meeting, including a record 9,900 paying punters on Ladies’ Day.
