Life will be a beach in Preston Road this month thanks to a fun-filled festival at the Freedom Centre.

The annual Freedom Festival will kick off with a traditional seaside-themed play day.

Bucket-loads of sand will soon be winging their way to the east Hull centre to transform the venue into a beach.

And everything you would expect from a traditional jolly by the British seaside will be on offer, from donkey rides and fairground attractions, to Punch and Judy and sandcastle-making competitions.

Now in its second year, the festival is being held by Preston Road Neighbourhood Development Committee (PRNDC).

Organiser Karen Tozer, a community participation officer with PRNDC, said: “The emphasis is on a traditional British day at the seaside – so that covers us in case it rains.

“We’re trying to get residents from all across east Hull and further afield to come and see the facilities here and see what Preston Road is like.

“We want to celebrate the fact this is a facility for people from the whole of Hull and not just Preston Road.

“I think this year’s festival is going to be even more of a success – it is going from strength to strength.”

The festival takes place from Thursday, August 21, to Sunday, August 24, and will also see the centre transformed into a live music venue with a range of free open-air gigs for all ages.

PRNDC consulted residents after last year’s week-long festival and kept the most popular events, aiming to make them bigger and better than before.

The beach-themed family play day will take place on Thursday, August 21, from 10am to 3pm.

Sand for the beach is being provided by Humberside Aggregates. Once the festival is finished it will be taken to Stonebridge Play Park, east Hull, to ensure nothing goes to waste.

On Friday, August 22, from 11am to 4pm, there will be a free outdoor musical event featuring 1950s and 1960s music.

Between 6.30pm and 9.30pm the Freedom Centre will adopt a nightclub vibe with music from young performers and DJs performing everything from drumming to hip-hop.

A giant family fun day will take place on Saturday, August 23, including 10 hours of live music. A Faith Ceremony will round the festival off on Sunday, August 24.

Help us give our area a good name

from the Hull Daily Mail/East Riding Mail Saturday, August 23

Organisers of this year’s Preston Road Freedom Festival hope the event will help put their community “on the map”.

Staff from Preston Road Neighbourhood Development Company (PRNDC) have worked tirelessly alongside a team of volunteers to organise the event.

It has taken months of planning, but Karen Tozer, community participation officer for PRNDC, said it would be worth the effort if it benefits the people of Preston Road.

She said: “There are so many misconceptions about this area, but events like this show just how community-minded the people of Preston Road are and what can be done when they put their minds to it.

“Last year’s festival was a test and this year, after consultation with residents, we have kept the most popular events and made them bigger and better.

“We hope it can help put the area and its residents on the map for all the right reasons.

“And if we can do that, then the past few months of planning will be all worthwhile.”

The four-day event concludes tomorrow and early indications suggest it has proved as popular as last year’s festival.

Ms Tozer said: “We are really pleased with how things have gone so far and it is nice to see that our efforts have been rewarded.

“We have arranged everything to be family-friendly and with good weather predicted for the weekend, we are keeping our fingers crossed that the popularity of the event continues.

“We especially want the children to have a good time as they are the future of the city and when they have fun so does everybody else.

“But this event is not just for them. We want people from across the city to come and enjoy themselves and make it a special day.”

Today is the third day of the festival and highlights include a music marathon at the Preston Road village centre.

More than 10 of the city’s finest cover bands will take to the stage, for 10 hours of non-stop music.

The event will form part of the festival’s Giant Family Fun Day, which begins at noon and lasts until about 10pm.

Tomorrow’s highlights include a faith ceremony at 10am, which will include a thanksgiving service.

For further information about the festival, call the PRNDC team on (01482) 710100.
