Visitors to Hull city centre can enjoy some jazz while they shop this Sunday. The 2008 Hull Jazz festival is in full flow as some of the finest UK musicians take to several stages throughout the city.
To celebrate the 16th festival and introduce newcomers to the jazz scene a free event has been organised in Queen’s Gardens on Sunday, August 3 from 11.30am to 5.30pm.
Jazz In The Gardens will include the Hull Junior Jazz Jam at 11.30am, East Coast Big Band at 12.30pm, The Oriole Brass Band at 2pm, Rev Ray Trio at 3.30pm and The Little Big Band at 4.30pm.
Festival organiser David Porter said: “The festival seems to be getting bigger each year, attracting people from all over the country and also overseas.
“The aim of Jazz In The Gardens is to celebrate the festival and also introduce new people to jazz music.
“I hope people will bring a picnic hamper and rug or picnic chair and relax in Hull’s most beautiful gardens to great music featuring the cream of local and regional musicians.”
Jazz In The Gardens is one of a number of events in this year’s jazz festival. The festival started on Sunday, July 27 and will finish on Sunday, August 3.
Acts throughout the week have included the Courtney Pine Band at Hull Truck Theatre and 5 Pieces Of Silver appearing at Pave café on Sunday, August 3.
Mr Porter said: “I think the jazz festival is very important to the city, bringing in new visitors as well as showing that the area has a reputation for a high quality of cultural activity.
“This year we’ve got a line-up of some of the top names in jazz to go so we hope this year will carry on the excellent atmospheres and attendances we’ve had at previous events.”

Crowds enthralled by all that jazz
from the Hull Daily Mail/East Riding Mail Monday, August 4
Music lovers were in high spirits as the 16th annual Hull Jazz Festival drew to a close.
Celebrations were in full swing in Queens Gardens as musicians took to an open air stage on the final day of the festival yesterday.
Five ensembles took to the stage, including the East Coast Big Band and the Little Big Band.
Mike Smith, who runs both bands, said the event had a great atmosphere.
Mr Smith, 75, of Little Weighton, said: “It’s always difficult to tell what it will be like.
“But if the weather’s good people come, put their chairs out and watch the entertainment.”
Mr Smith worked in London for many years, touring with singers including Matt Monroe and Shirley Bassey, as well as recording for the BBC.
After living in Spain for a number of years, he settled in East Yorkshire.
The East Yorkshire Coast Band has been going for almost 30 years in one form or another.
The bands will be playing at the Burton Agnes Jazz Festival at Burton Agnes Hall from Friday to Sunday.
