Hi everyone!
Are there any followers of Tony Earnshaw out there? He’s the film critic for The Yorkshire Post and Artistic Director for the Bradford Film Festival (so the man knows his fi-lums very well indeed).
Anyway, he’s coming to Waterstone’s on Friday 22nd August (from 6pm till about 7pm/7:30pm) to talk about and sign copies of his book ‘Made in Yorkshire’, which looks at the movies and actors of our White Rose County.
I’ve just realised that many students (specifically those taking Film Studies) will have returned to their home cities by then, but this event is open to everyone anyway. It’ll be a great night in our Costa coffee shop for chatting about the world of the silver screen, famous actors, Yorkshire… and Pontefract Cakes (which we’ll provide for all you liquorice lovers). Sounds cracking to me!
Tickets are £1 each and redeemable against a purchase during the event – but a purchase is of course optional, so it’s not like you have to buy a copy of the book (although it does look ace). It’d be fantastic if we could get a group of film buffs, cinema goers, movie fanatics, aspiring actors, film critics, drama students… and of course proud Yorkshire folk… to join us for a really friendly night of northernness!
Hope to see you there!
Richard.

There is a great programme on Sunday evening called Lights, Camera, Location; the actor John Middleton who plays the vicar in Emmerdale highlights the locations of the north used in film or television programmes. It’s a real feel-good factor programme. I’m sure that ‘Made in Yorkshire’ will be good too.

I’ve never even heard of Lights, Camera, Location. It sounds good though, I might have to have a gander. Thanks Rosy! :)

Hi everyone! Come on then, what’s your favourite film? It could very well be in the book (especially if it includes Yorkshire puddings and the word ‘eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!’)
Having said that, it’s very hard to choose a favourite film, although one in my top 10 would have to be The League of Gentleman’s Apocalypse, and I’m pretty sure it’ll be mentioned in the book (it’d better be at least).

I like any film with Tom Hanks – I have seen Big so many times. He is a great actor.
I like Calendar Girls as well; filmed in the Dales.

I haven’t seen Big for years, but funnily enough we were talking about it at work the other day – it’s fate’s way of saying I have to go and buy it!

Dracula, based partially in Whitby, not featuring the word "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" but the words "AAAAAAAAAargh!"

The 1988 Arnold Schwarzeneggar film Twins was loosely based on a book about a pair of twins from the Hessle Road area who were separated at birth. One was brought up as a fisherman and the other grew up as a bodybuilder in Nijmegen, Holland.

Hi everyone.
I’m sorry to say that this event has been CANCELLED due to lack of ticket sales (only 2 in total, sadly).
Many thanks,

mimi: The film "Land Of Green Ginger" was written by Alan Plater and directed by Brian Parker for the BBC’s Play for Today series in 1973.
It is currently not listed on the BBC’s Audio and Video serch facilty, but this is a relatively new service and more, older content is being added regularly. It is listed on the British Film Institute’s website -http://www.screenonline.org.uk/tv/id/1202180/
The BBC shop does not have any "Play for Today" DVDs or Videos available. It might be worth contacting them directly to see if they have any plans to release them or make the film available to view online.

‘Land of Green Ginger’ was last shown as part of Alan Platers much deserved Tribute night on BBC4 some time ago. The views of Hull then [1973] show just how far Hull has moved on over the past 35 years. The music was interesting as it was performed by the then local folk group the Watersons and I’m sure one of the songs was specially written for the film by Mike Waterson and they actually performed in a couple of sequences. The designer of the show, Ian Ashhurst, also had local connection as he trained at Hull College of Art.
Over the years drama film crews have visited Hull on numerous occasions, another of Alan Platers projects one of the ‘The Beiderbeck…’ episodes came to Hull as did ‘Fools & Horses’ with the classic episode ‘To Hull & Back’. In the ‘80’s I worked on an episode of the BBC series ‘Truckers’ with locations in and around my hometown, Strange feeling coming back and being the provider of local knowledge as well as the show’s designer. We were filming out at Beeston one day and I took great delight in introducing some of the crew to filled, full plate Yorkshire puds, it was so popular our location caterer had to put it on the menu later in the week. Not the same though!
I do have a copy of ‘Green Ginger’ and could provide DVD copies should there be a PM facility on this board, maybe Will can throw some light.

The tv show about "Adrian Mole" also came to Hull and shot footage outside Princess Dock and at St Mary’s on Lowgate.
"Clockwork" starring John Cleese, was also partially shot in Hull outside the Train Station. The location is now a part of the interchange.

Just remembered another film with Hull links. In ‘A Fish Called Wanda’ starring John Cleese his house was a really nice art-deco style semi detached on West Ella Way in Kirkella. Here’s the google map reference http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=kirkella,+hull&ie=UTF8&ll=53.750424,-0.446835&spn=0.001456,0.006866&t=h&z=18
