I took a trip down memory lane last week and went to Bridlington. We used to go as a family for our summer holiday. There is a museum in Bridlington called Old Penny Memories Museum where they house all the old penny slot machines and the laughing sailor, Jolly Jack. I always remember being intrigued by the laughing sailor and stood watching him many a time when I was young.

It brought back so many lovely memories. I had completely forgotten about those old slot machines. It was good fun.

I also went on the Bridlington Eye. It was £2.50, cheaper than I thought it would be.

I have passed it many a time Rosy but never gone in. Do they supply the old coins so you can play the machines?

Yes Breeze, you can buy 10 one penny coins for 50 pence. I actually won quite a few as well. It brought back so many good memories, that it was worth it.

Also, if you want a cuppa afterwards, there is the 60s cafe downstairs. The deco was everything 60s and the music was great. The food prices weren’t the 60s though.

It was unfortunate though that it just looked as if it needed to be decorated. I enjoyed myself anyway.

I’ve not seen the Brid museum but there use to a similar thing on the pier at Hastings. I was always fascinated by amusement machines as a kid mainly at With. So fascinated in fact a Flick-Ball machine sits on a table in our hall, much to the delight of any visiting children. My favourite machine was the chrome arm with the articulated fingers which lowered on to a revolving tray and picked up masses of prizes [I don’t think!] Still I think there was a better chance on winning with these machines than those grabs that operate today. They all seemed to be sponsored by Vaseline!

Yes, I went on the Flick-Ball machine as well and I never did win on those arm machines, the prizes always slipped through. You always got something on that little elephant that went around the treasure trove and came out the other end with a box with something in it. It wasn’t much. I did it this time at Bridlington and I got two sweets and one old penny.

It’s great Ken that you have a Flick-Ball machine in your hall, I bet you are popular with the children.

Thanks Rosy for reminding me about the Elephant, seem to rememember it cost 6d. a go but at least you were sure you’d got something when you opened the little white box! Just remembered another seaside machine where you could print messages on a strip of aluminium [bit like a big Dymo printer]. If you put in other coins before the first ran out you could print a strip as long as you liked. Think there was one on Paragon Station at one time.
