The man who killed teenager Joe Dinsdale is to go on trial for murder. Lewis Stephen Gray, 20, is charged with murdering Joe, 17, on February 11 by stabbing him in the heart.

Mr Gray, of Marfleet Lane, east Hull, pleaded not guilty to murder at Hull Crown Court yesterday, as first reported on the Mail’s website.

His court appearance had been postponed from May, when he was unable to attend as he was receiving treatment in hospital for a serious heart condition.

Joe, of Bilsdale Grove, east Hull, was stabbed close to the junction of Bilton Grove and Portobello Street nearby.

He died in an ambulance on his way to Hull Royal Infirmary.

A post-mortem revealed he died from a single stab wound.

Mr Gray’s barrister, Richard Thompson, told the court his case would be argued on the grounds of accident and potentially self-defence.

At an earlier court hearing in February, the prosecution said it was alleged he armed himself with a knife after an argument and goaded Joe before being punched and stabbing him in the heart.

Speaking at that time, prosecutor Mark Bury said: “The real issue in the case is either self-defence or lack of intent.

“In a nutshell, the Crown’s case is that after an argument the defendant armed himself with a knife and goaded the victim.

“The victim reacted by trying to punch the defendant and then he stabbed him once in the heart.”

A number of Joe’s family and friends attended yesterday’s court hearing.

Joe was killed a few days short of his 18th birthday, which he planned to celebrate in Amsterdam with his friends.

Several hundred people attended the celebration of Joe’s life at Eastern Cemetery in Preston Road in March. Mourners were asked to wear the colours of Joe’s favourite rugby team, Hull Kingston Rovers.

His parents, Andrew Dinsdale and Patricia Nicholls, requested the service be a celebration of his young life.

In February, a minute’s silence was held for Joe at Craven Park before the Robins played Warrington.

Mr Gray is due to appear at court for trial on October 1 and the case is due to last three weeks.

He was remanded in custody until then.

Under current law, manslaughter would certainly be an option, as there were mitigating circumstances… however, whatever your feelings about Joe Dinsdale as a person, he did not deserve to die, and if you kill someone, in my opinion, you should be classed as a murderer, no matter how much you were driven to it.

mitigating circumstances?? yeah he is a murderer and a coward .the circumstances surrounding joes death will prove that . i am joe’s cousin and as u say he did not deserve to die .the devastation its left our family is horrendus .we know what happened and all we want is justice but will the courts give it ? we shall see ..

Mitigating circumstances mean that he may not normally have done that had he not been provoked by some extra circumstances – such as his flat being trashed and people refusing to leave…. "murderer and coward" are simply adjectives used to describe the accused… they are neither circumstantial or mitigating.

No matter what, we do agree that no-one deserves to be killed or to die so young. However, will the courts administer justice??? Hmmm. We shall indeed have to see. Even if you rape and abuse kids these days you only get about ten years and then a free council house in a family street.

Doesn’t really matter does it. At the end of the day, he was someone’s relative, others’ friend… nothing can bring him back. Tragic.
