from the Hull Daily Mail/East Riding Mail Tuesday, April 22
Residents were today sharing their memories, photographs and memorabilia to mark the centenary of Garden Village. They were attending an event at the Humberside Police Youth and Community Centre in Elm Avenue, Garden Village, from 1.30pm to 8pm.
The Garden Village Society centenary steering group was due to hear stories from current and former residents.
Their memories will help to form a commemorative booklet to be delivered free to every house in Garden Village in July.
June Cooke, secretary of the steering group, said people who do not live in Garden Village will be able to get a copy from Waterstone’s in Jameson Street, Hull city centre.
June said: “About 40 people have responded.
“We are hoping for some more stories about life within the village.
“I have had some lovely conversations with people who have responded to the appeals.”
Students from Malet Lambert School were due to be on hand to record the event as part of a multi-media project for the centenary.
The Carousel Theatre Company was also performing its show, Musical Memories.
The centenary celebrations recently received £9,420 of National Lottery funding.
The money will be used to help mark the official centenary weekend on July 26 and 27.
As part of the celebrations, people will be able to go on a guided historical walk, capturing village life over the past 100 years.
Garden Village was built by entrepreneur Sir James Reckitt to improve the living conditions of his company’s employees.

The afternoon was a great success. Many more people than expected attended and enjoyed exchanging stories with friends old and new. They also enjoyed a wonderful performance from the Carousel Theatre Company who entertained with their programme of ‘Musical Memories’.One entry in the Visitors’ Book read "An excellent Do". There will be another ‘drop in’ session tomorrow (Wednesday).
