Hi_awards_cmyk

Great News!!! When the members of The Garden Village Society appointed the members of The Centenary Celebrations Steering Group, I don’t think any of us really knew how exciting and consuming the whole project would be. Two years down the line and several small events later we have just been given one of the most exciting pieces of news. We have just been awarded a grant from the National Lottery Awards for All!!!

The Historical Walk Project

It was decided very early in the project that at the main celebrations, to be held at the annual Summer Fayre organised by the Police Club Management Committee, would include a re-enactment of opening ceremony which was attended 100 years ago by James Reckitt and his family along with several city dignitaries. On researching this, so many other interesting stories of both official occasions and ordinary family life were found, that it seemed a shame let these things pass unrecognised. Thanks to the National Lottery Awards for All funding we are now able to offer an exciting project involving local schools, amateur dramatics groups and professional actors. Together they will create a guided walk around the village where stories from the past will unfold in front of you. If you want a place on the walk you can reply to this post, visit our forum at www.gardenvillagehull.co.uk or email me on secretary@gardenvillagehull.co.uk to register your interest – we will contact you with details later. OR if you are a budding actor please contact me in he same way.

If the residents of Garden Village could plant 42,000 spring flowering bulbs over three weekends, just think what could be achieved in July when we have the unique opportunity to celebrate living in an area that is 100 years old and through the efforts of all the residents has in the main kept it’s origional feel and image. Come on everyone lets show Hull what we can do!

A big ‘thank you’ to the 50 plus residents and ex-residents of Garden Village who attended the Open Afternoon at the Boys’Club today. It was exciting and indeed moving to see so many old friends renewing friendships and telling stories from many years ago. Thanks to everyone who brought old photos and other memorabilia to add to the ever growing collection which is helping build a picture of life in the Village over the past 100 years. We can look forward to more exciting occasions over the next few months culminating in the main celebration in July.
