The internet and the world-wide web is proving to be a wonderful way of sharing your interests with others from all walks of life and all around the world at just the click of a mouse. There are many good nature and wildlife-related websites out there and here are just a few that I use regularly, and can recommend. The majority are charitable organisations or run entirely by volunteers.
http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/ This is a great site and there are over 20,000 members! Blogs, galleries, forums – in fact hundreds of thousands of pages about British wildlife, the Environment and the Great Outdoors; from birds, butterflies, fungi and trees to climate change, marine life, astronomy and the weather. Well worth a visit.
http://www.rspb.org.uk/ The Royal Society for Protection of Birds official site. A huge site with lots of information, photographs and helpful guides to bird identification, looking after wildlife in the garden, stuff for the kids and lots more.
http://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk Another charity, the Woodland Trust does a lot of good work in protecting and preserving our native woodland, which of course provides valuable habitat for much of our wildlife. Hull is believed to be the least-wooded city in the country and they have been responsible for many initiatives to change this in recent years!
www.ywt.org.uk/ Yorkshire’s branch of the Wildlife Trust which aims to promote and preserve the diversity of nature and wildlife in our county – the site has recently been revamped and there’s lots of info, news and views of interest to the budding naturalist, from our own backyard!
http://www.garden-birds.co.uk/ Dedicated to our garden birds there’s an handy A-Z of birds with descriptions and some audio of their songs and calls.
http://www.uksafari.com/ A great little web-site, loads of interesting articles on wildlife, photography etc Receive the free newsletter or send your friend a wildlife e-card for free. There’s also an online shop of wildlife related stuff.
If you know of any others please let us know and post a link here so that we can all check it out!

www.saveoursquirrels.org.uk A site dedicated to the protection and preservation of our Red Squirrel population here in England – there’s a lot of news & info about the little red critters and a ‘live’ webcam – if you’re lucky, you may get to see one or two of them. They support Walker’s Cajun Squirrel flavoured crisps – check the site to see more!

http://www.bto.org/ This is the website of Britain’s leading bird research charity, the British Trust for Ornitholgy – ‘promoting bird conservation through volunteer-based surveys’. Lots of facts and figures if you’re interested in knowing how different species are doing in Britain and lots more. If you took part in the recent RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch week-end youmay be interested to know that the BTO have a weekly garden birdwatch all year round!

http://www.yorkshirewildlife.co.uk/ ‘People,Nature & Photography’ sums up the site well. Here’s a website with an emphasis on the flora and fauna in Yorkshire – ‘educating people about the wildlife in Yorkshire’ – anyone interested in wildlife photography will find plenty to interest them.

The spring sunshine has brought a few butterflies out and I spotted several Comma Butterflies and a couple of small Tortoiseshell fluttering about today. I came across this web-site by Steve Chesire who hopes the site will inspire us to join in his ‘fight’ to save our British Butterflies. The site has a pretty comprehensive collection of articles and photos – http://www.britishbutterflies.co.uk and a range of books available for anyone who wants to know even more.

http://www.wildlife-gardening.org.uk ‘Space for Nature’. This is a smashing little site with plenty of interesting reading and well-illustrated though I’m not sure if it’s being updated regularly. To give it its full title ‘The Space For Nature Wildlife Gardening Forum’, it is a website for people interested in the wildlife in their gardens and for gardeners who want to actively encourage wildlife. All I need now is a garden!
