What’s the deal with the ‘real biker’ issue?

I’m confused! some seem to think you’re not a real biker if you don’t use your bike for everything – you ride all year round – you have a certain type of bike – certain size engine…

Anyone know what this is all about – I thought if you like playing on motorbikes you’re a biker.

This one is so widespread in the UK and rarely seen anywhere else in the world. It must be something in the british dna that makes people here so judgemental of others based on materialistic possessions or personal choices. Whatever it may be that causes it remains a mystery, but generally the people who would say these things are actually uncomfortable living in their own skin and are expressing their anxieties of their own deficiencies.

Hi this debate has been going on all the time I have been riding and I got my first bike in 1959 and have been riding ever since. I think its bull, you are a real biker if you enjoy bikes and riding it dosen’t matter weather you ride all year round in all weathers or not just enjoy the bike the ride and all aspects of motorcycling. real bikers don’t critisize others they just enjoy the company of other bikers and the fun of riding.

fantastic, I feel much better about being a biker in my own way and not worrying about what other people presume.

I think people are far too judgemental (mental being the operative word here!!) They see a biker, and wham! thats it. WRONG. I’ve known bikers and been around bikes since i was small and I have found them to be the nicest bunch of people you could ever wish to meet. Ok fair enough, there are a few idiots out there, but I just wish people would stop tarring all bikers with the same brush.

    Rant over :)

Good point Gill, I have seen this preconception many times. As soon as Motorcycles are mentioned WHAM!!! up go the shields. Once upon a lot of years ago, a friend and myself decided to take a trip down to london for a few days on an old norton commando, stopping off at Grantham services en route for a bite to eat and to get out of the rain. On entering the Little Chef at the services we were approached by the manageress and told that we were not welcome in there and that a takeaway was in the main building for "OUR SORT". Well thanks Mrs Little Chef, I will pass on that information so that you dont get the likes of T.E Lawrence or even the Heir to the throne lowering the tone of your establishment.

Glad I’m not the only one to feel this way Rob. Some people are too narrow minded for their own good …

some of my parents mates who are in their 50s went up to Scotland on their bike and the hotel they’d booked in just turned round and said "oh we dont serve bikers" and cancelled their reservation. crazy

cant say I’ve come across any negative attitudes yet, but it’s only been a year and a half’s worth of riding for me so far.

as for those who don’t ride all the time, well most bikers I know would rather be in a car if the weather is really really bad.. I think the negativity is mainly towards the "weekend warriors", or what ever offensive version you like, that often seem to give the normal everyday biker a bad name. but it’s the same with car drivers.. get a nice hot Sunday or bank holiday and it brings all the loonatics out with the police not far behind.. Just means us everyday loonatics have to stay away from the usual spots :)
