What I like about this site is it gives a voice to everyone, whatever their interests. It’s a pity the same can’t be said for our local radio stations. They all sound exactly the same!
I had hoped (perhaps naively) that the granting of a new licence last year might have improved matters. Some hope! What does the FM in KCFM stand for? Frustratingly Mediocre?
Viking, KCFM, Galaxy . . . all playing the same old same old. And even though Humberside still finds room for Henry Ayrton on a Saturday night (the best thing on local radio by far) it’s a far cry from the good old days when folk, jazz and blues music all had their own BBC programmes. Instead we get endless sport phone-ins and pap.
So okay, our kind of music might not be mainstream but hey, isn’t that what community radio is all about . . . room for something different, just occasionally?
Just half-an-hour of each with a chance to plug local gigs etc can’t be too much to ask. Or just one half-hour! I’d even come and spin the MP3s myself for free!
But then, hey, that might just get in the way of making sure we all play the same records as each other – or allowing a few more sporting rants!
What do you think. Perhaps it’s time we started a petition . . .

Yeah local radio is pretty poor at the moment. Although in KCFM’s defense they do very very occassionly play a blinding track. Gansters by The Specials was on yeasterday, as was Suffregette City by Bowie.
They’re the best of a bad bunch musicwise, but KCFM’s presenters manage to reach new levels in spouting mindless drivel.
I think it should be easier for independent radio stations to set up. It costs too much money to do that. At least the internet has opened the door to some people but more variety on our airwaves would be fantastic.

We listen to KCFM in our office because it’s the only one we can get reception for, and OMG, the presenters are unbelievably amateurish. I’m sure they are nice people and are trying hard – but it is cringeworthy on an hourly basis. I agree with Robbo that the music just about saves it because they play some good tunes, just when you’re about to throw the radio through the window!
