Here’s a couple of shots taken of Victoria Pier after the sun had dipped below the horizon. The skies on these occasions were wonderful I thought one of these looked a bit like ‘war of the worlds’! I didn’t know whether to take photographs or run for cover… The high-tide often sees a ‘lull’ before it turns resulting in a relatively calm (depending on the wind) river and this all helps with the reflections of sky. The gulls came bang on cue to add a little foreground interest! I have found that Autumn and winter seem to produce a good number of colourful skies over the Humber and, what’s even better, is you can pack up at sunset (sometimes before 4 p.m during the winter)and be home for tea!

Again Bob you have captured a wonderful scene that is not noticed by most people. The sunrises and sunsets do give us some beautiful kaleidoscopes of colours that I sometimes just stop and gaze at.

Thanks, Travellingman. Yes, it is hard to believe that anyone could fail to be affected by such natural wonder and beauty. To quote from the poem ‘Leisure’ by Wm Henry Davies, ‘What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare.’

If you head for the pier at low tide between September and November and look down where the Rivers Hull and Humber meeet, you may be lucky enough to see seals diving in and out of the water. That time of year is their breeding season and they go down to the confluence at low tide to feed on the eels which swim down the Hull into the Humber. When the water is low it’s easier for the seals to catch them. The most beautiful sight I ever saw was one Autumn afternoon with conditions similar to those in your photo, when a seal was bathed in that gorgeous red hue.

I have occasionally seen a seal there TinaT, and how I hoped I would see one, like you, in the wonderful evening light! Lucky you! I have also seen the seal much further down the river Hull on a couple of occasions. I thought they were after the eels, you have confirmed it. The gentleman with the Speed boat ‘Dragonfly’ (Steve)arrived back from a trip on the river Humber and told me a seal had emerged with an eel wriggling around in its mouth! I have a couple of photos of the seal I saw and will dig them out – perhaps a post for Wild About Hull & East Riding? A very interesting reply.

Lets hope the plans to improve and restore the pier get the go ahead! I would love to see just what it was like back in the day.

    Nice pics as always.
