Poem by Doreen E. Hampshire, Hull, from the Hull Daily Mail/East Riding Mail on Tuesday, June 3
The city of Hull was deserted today,
As our football team was playing away.
Hull City (the Tigers) have done Hull proud,
And all the supporters are cheering so loud.
They were in London, one Saturday,
Gone to play the Wembley way.
"Come on you "Ull", you won’t let us down,
You have the support from all over the town.
Hull have never played on Wembley turf before,
And Tiger supporters, you can them roar,
For over 100 years it has been their dream,
"Just do your best", the supporters scream.
Amber and black have left our town,
Yet win or lose, Hull will still wear the crown.
They have worked and played so hard this year.
So when play started, just hear the fans cheer.
By mid-afternoon, all pubs were full,
But so empty was the centre of Hull.
Old men and women, children too,
Were having such a hullabaloo.
We won the match, Dean Windass scored.
You should have heard how the Tigers roared.
They are the sporting pride of Hull,
Who dare say now, that we are dull?
