When I started at Riley in ‘57 half my first year class were train enthusiasts and as the new building had the elevated line running along the edge of the playing field concentrating on lessons on that side of the school proved a bit difficult for some. I memorable incident I do recall was an early physics lesson with Mr. [Bill] Pike when one of the ‘spotters’ made a strange gurgling sound while pointing frantically out of the window. Going past on the line [ and even I a non-believer thought it very impressive!] was a streamlined steam locomotive with a modern diesel loco’s front and back [a Streak shunted by 2 Deltics I think was the official description]. Classmates by now were running around the lab like headless chickens, poor old Bill couldn’t have got order back with a chair & a whip!
Still, a couple of years later I was often struck speechless by the sight of a BSA Goldstar or even a Honda Benly Sports.

Ken. Do you have a date for when this happened ? The only mainline diesels at that time were the ones running on the Southern. The English Electric Type 4’s did not come out until 1958 and the Peaks until 1959.

The ‘Streak’ incident probably took place towards the end of our first year [mid ‘58] as I’m sure we wouldn’t have the nerve to behave so badly even with a gentle soul like Bill Pike in charge earlier in our first year. We obviously could see the attractive proposition of being second years come that September!

Ken. Thanks for the reply. I am only just catching up on my mail, as I suffered a hard disc failure.
