Here’s a view of my old primary school to start off.

St George’s Road school on the corner of St Georges Road and Arthur Street. 1st August 1981.

I started there in 1945, in an infants class. Mrs Stone was my first teacher, in charge of a class of 52. The register went up to 48 pupils, and she had to rule in a further 4 lines.

We were soon taught to print and read. We had a test on Friday morning, which, presumably she marked over lunch time. Those who did well were allowed to play with wooden bricks or plasticine in the afternoon, while those who hadn’t done well were made to practice until they satisfied Mrs Stone.

This was the big boys’ class (i.e. about 10/11 years old, about to move on to secondary schools) of 1950. The girls who passed their scholarships went to the appropriate high school, and those who didn’t went into the senior girls classes.

St George’s Road school; This is another one of the full class, on sports day at the cricket circle in 1950. I think I can remember most of the names if anyone is interested.
