Football, History and Hull

It was nice to see the article on the Hull Daily Mail website regarding Ebeneezer Codd Morley and the memorial to be placed in his honour.

I will be the first to admit, I am not a big sporting fan, however, I do like to see the local sides doing well, and seeing that if it wasn’t for an Hull born gentleman, we wouldn’t have the Football Association.

I read with great interest and excitement that news on the BBC website that Hull’s Museums and Art Galleries had attracted more than 500,000 people in 2009, the highest figure since 1994!

This is a great achievement, and I wish to congratulate both the staff and management of the museums and art gallery for their sterling work in these fantastic locations.

Events such as the Time Raiders, the Victorian Christmas in the Museums Quarter and…

The Angel Inn

I am looking for a photo or other image for the Angel Inn. Although there are two recorded inns of this name I am specifically interested in the one located in Clappison Square (or Clapperson Square). The main street for the square is sometimes recorded as Sykes Street, on other occasions it is recorded as Bourne Street, and it was close to the Charter House.

The area around the Charter House has been redeveloped and I have been told that…

The Hull General Infirmary and Prospect Centre

Prospect Centre is built on the site of the former General Infirmary on Prospect street, which once formed the Hull to Beverley Turnpike. The turnpike appears on several maps between the 16 and 1700’s and features gallows, although the exact location of these gallows is difficult to establish.

During the 17 and early 1800’s Hull had several hospitals within the town walls, these were small…

Royal Oak/Oak Vaults, Scott Street

Hi Been browsing your posts for the last three hours and felt I had to join to make use of such a vast store of knowledge about my home town.

Has anyone any info on the history of the Oak Vaults (Scott Street). My great-great grandfather was landlord of the pub from 1887 – 90; after he died his widow took over the licence for a year before she gave up the trade.

Prior to that they were licensees at the American Tavern (Duke St) and…

hi Mike, you probably already know about this but have you read a book called `Living and dying in Hull in the 19th century` by Bernard Foster. I found it originally in the library and was so taken up with it I got my Mum and Dad to buy me as a birthday gift about 15 years ago. I know it`s out of print now but the information on Victorian Hull is amazing.
