I decided to rename this post, as it deals with more than just holiday trains.
If you haven’t read the book ‘The Day of the Holiday Express’ by Richard Woodley, and published by Ian Allen, I can recommend it. Not least, because it contains some of my photographs, and I partly provided the inspiration for him to write it. It is an attempt to account for every engine movement on the Western Region on 9th July 1960.

To greet you, a picture taken at Pickburn on 27th April 1957.
It shows WD Class 90382 of Springhead, shunting its train of empty wagons, before propelling them into Brodsworth Colliery.
This trip was organised by the late C.T. Goode who was then a German master at Riley High School. Mr T.W.G. Spinks accompanied us. B.R. arranged for a brand new guardsvan for us to travel in, which was marshalled inside the regular…
