CITY SAFARI - Nature notes from an urban jungle

The group has certainly been quiet of late and I thought I’d see if I could generate some interest. Perhaps we’re all entering hibernation mode with autumn well and truly here? These short dark days aren’t my favourite time of year though they’re great for photographing sunrises and sunsets – no really early mornings or late nights – you can be back for tea after getting your sunset shots! We can also look forward to BBC Autumnwatch which is on…

East Park: Squirrels!!

At one point it was a rarety to spot such a majestic creature running up a tree, or pouncing along the grass, but now East Park is a haven for the furry little creatures.

Some say they are vermin, but I have quite a soft spot for them!

Tales from the 'Riverbank'

Coot_collecting_022_by_bob_carter

When looking for wildlife, a section of an old drain strewn with rubbish – wheelie bins, an old computer monitor, old armchair and the ubiquitous shopping trolley – may seem an unlikely location, but you would be wrong! I spent less than an hour recently at such a place and what a surprise I had. Within minutes of arriving and sitting on the banks of Barmy Drain (or Barmston, to give it it’s proper name)which runs through Hull, I saw a pair of…

Ladybirds

Do you remember the great ladybird ‘invasion’ of 1976? I noticed quite a few ladybirds last week on the river front, but nothing like the numbers reported further south. According to the national media, they arrived in some southern counties in the tens of millions, on a scale similar to the 1976 invasion. I certainly remember the 1976 so-called invasion – some hedges, walls and fences were literally covered in them. Nobody really knows what causes…

Colombo – I don’t think that the ladybirds would be interested in either. The hoverflies, like the…

East Park

Spotted this in East Park Bob, and thought it would make a lovely addition to the group.

It was near the nature area, and where the staff have created a little corner for wildlife such as butterflies and other insects. We were just suprised to see so many!

Heaven's Above!

Parakeet_by_bob_carter_001

After featuring on the local news I popped over to Cottingham to get a look at these parakeets for myself. Yes, unbelievable, a pair of ‘em in residence at St.Mary’s Church! I got a good few photos and hope you like ‘em. Now this really is strange – are they escapees of what? No-one seems to know. You saw the photographic evidence here first! And no, these aren’t the parakeets down south (ring-necked) which are now so well-established that they…

Rescued

We sometimes get birds, attempting to fly through our windows, sometimes with fatal consequences.

This female chaffinch, fortunately, only stunned herself and flew off after about 10 minutes recovering.

When we had cats, it was a race to rescue the bird, as the cats quickly learned the significance of the gentle thud on the window.
