About The Society
In August 1971, the City Council published a planning application to build houses and bungalows in Acacia Drive, where the prefabs had been demolished. Local people were concerned about this as, the area had been designated as a conservation area and the plans made no concessions to this. The Spooner dwellings were like others being built by the Council.
The Garden Village Preservation Society was formed and a petition was delivered to the Council. Many people wrote objecting to the planning application. The plans were amended and some concessions were made. One block of two-storey houses was taken out and replaced with four bungalows, the colour of the bricks and roof tiles was changed and the proposed post and rail fence along the Laburnum Avenue frontage was replaced with a privet hedge.
At the first Annual General Meeting in St. Columba’s Dalton Hall on 18th May 1972, when 100 people were present, the name of the Society was changed to Garden Village Society as its aims were not solely preservation. Mr N. Waller was elected chairman, Mr T. Broadley treasurer, Mrs S.D. Houlton treasurer and Mr J.W. Houlton assistant secretary. In November 2006, a sub committee of the main society was established who’s objectives are to organise the celebrations for the 100th birthday of the village. The main celebrations will be held in the village in July 2008 but watch this site for details of he up and coming events.

On the 27th July 2008 there will be the unveiling of a plaque followed by the re-enactment of the opening ceremony and then a series of historical walks around the village, where walkers will be told stories and meet characters from the last 100 years of the village. Lets hope that we have ideal weather on the day just as it was…

A Man of Vision
A century ago a man of intuition, Saw his plans come to fruition, Whilst sitting in his garden fair, With trees and bird song everywhere.
This special man of great renown, Planned a village in a town, He’d mused and mused from morn ‘til night, This situation can’t be right.
My workers who do strive so hard’ Go home to rest in a back yard, With outside loo and old tin bath, No lawn to tend, no garden path – To…

Great News!!! When the members of The Garden Village Society appointed the members of The Centenary Celebrations Steering Group, I don’t think any of us really knew how exciting and consuming the whole project would be. Two years down the line and several small events later we have just been given one of the most exciting pieces of news. We have just been awarded a grant from the National Lottery Awards for All!!!
