A Brief Journey Into Sculcoates

Sculcoates is an ancient parish that once stood 1 and half miles from the town of Kingston upon Hull.

By 1774 and the creation of "The Old Dock" (Queen’s Garden’s) Sculcoates finally joined the town, with long elongated streets and thoroughfares.

The parish had it’s own church, named St Mary’s, and built in 1760. Sadly, the church no longer exists and a newer St Mary’s church replaced it on Sculcoates Lane.

Here are a couple of shots…

Kingston upon Hull has such a long history, and over the years, it’s not just the buildings which have vanished, but customs, have vanished gone too.

With this thread I aim to provide a set of strange, amusing, poignant, and informative facts, about the City we now live in.

The first recorded community exsisting in the area appeared in print in 1086 in the Domesday Book. It appeared as a small community of monks living in the small hamlet of "Myton", meaning "Farm at the confluence of two rivers"

By the 12th Century, the monks of Meaux (Modern day Wawne) created a new town by the name of Wyke. Wyke is derived from the Scandinavian term VIK, meaning "A Creek", which was a reference to the River Hull.

Meaux…

It is hard to keep away from the area of Sculcoates, as everytime I visit, I find something new!

It is like a treasure trail of historical buildings, mills, and industry, all tightly packed with modern businesses.

Earlier this week, I grabbed my old maps, new maps, camera, and plenty of batteries, and ventured back into Sculcoates.

Time capsules seem to be a trend you don’t hear of one for ages then everybody’s digging and burying.

I realised that many of these capsules would be lost or forgotten. I began to wonder where time capsules were in the area, there must be hundreds?

Is there a list anywhere, do you have to register them?

I came upon an idea of making a duplicate caslue to each one buried and displaiying it in a see through case above the original buried…
